Hugh Sexey welcomes Mr Drew

Dear Parents/Carers

I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to work in your school community from September and greatly look forward to building relationships with you as I work with colleagues to further support and promote the academic, social and emotional development of the pupils at Hugh Sexey.

The very reason I embarked on a career in teaching was Hugh Sexey Middle School. I left Hugh Sexey as a pupil in 1996 and was taught by some truly inspirational teachers who impacted me in such a positive way, I was desperate to follow in their footsteps. I followed the familiar route through what is now the Wessex Learning Trust and left Kings of Wessex to head to Cardiff and study a Batchelor of Science degree in Sport alongside pursuing a semi-professional rugby career.

Returning to my home, Theale, rather more abruptly than planned after a significant rugby injury, I gained a place on the Mid Somerset Consortium for Teacher Training and gained QTS in the summer of 2005. Meeting my now wife Aimee we settled on the family farm and have remained here ever since bringing up our two children George (4) and Archie (1). Incidentally, my first day as an employee in the Wessex Learning Trust will also be George’s as a pupil.

Throughout my 12 years in the teaching profession I have learned that remarkable things can be achieved by all pupils when given the best possible chances and opportunities. It is our moral imperative that we pursue these chances on behalf of the pupils in our care. After 3 years as head of Physical Education, it was a compelling desire to develop confident, independent and well-rounded citizens that drove me to become a Pastoral Leader and subsequently Assistant Headteacher in charge of student achievement, well-being and Key Stage two to three transition. I have spent the last 12 very rewarding years at Crispin School, working with some exceptional colleagues and being privileged to influence positively the lives of thousands of students.

I cannot wait to start the next chapter of my career and feel privileged to be joining the Hugh Sexey community. I look forward to working with the pupils, staff and governors at Hugh Sexey and building upon the fabulous work that my predecessor has begun. I am very aware I have a big pair of shoes to fill and will do my very best to do justice to the legacy of Mr Sage. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him publicly for his time and expertise and kindness he has shown to me through my preparations for September.

Mr M Drew
