Maths Intent Statement

At Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School, our children understand that maths is an important part of everyday life and will equip them with skills they need for their futures. Our sequence of learning is broad, balanced and allows children to develop an enjoyment and enthusiasm for maths, where learners are given opportunities to celebrate their skills in a variety of creative ways, encouraging them to apply new knowledge both in and out of context. Drawing from the key principles from the Teaching for Mastery ‘Big 5 Ideas’, all children are given opportunities to explain their reasoning and problem solve with the rich tapestry of aspirational and diverse tasks and activities that promote high level thinking. Children feel supported through the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract resources and teaching strategies to help them gain confidence, self-belief and allows all learners to engage with the curriculum, irrespective of ability
