  • Jolaurabi School, Kenya

Thu 28 Apr 2016 Ms Taylor
Hugh Sexey Middle School is pleased to be developing a relationship with a charity funded school, Jolaurabi School, in Kenya. Last summer term, the English and Maths departments were able to donate old, disused textbooks and dictionaries to this school.  Children attending this school are very poor, and the only way for them to gain an education is through the sponsorship of the 'Educate the Kids' charity.  The school has electricity only intermittently, teaching resources are unbelievably scarecrow, however, the pupils are so keen and proud to learn.
Over Easter holiday, Megan Rees (6KC) and her sister Bethan (now at Kings of Wessex), together with their family, travelled to Kenya to work with the children and teachers at Jolaurabi school.  Megan returned with letters of thanks and gratitude from three of the pupils.  I hope you enjoy reading them.
The choir from Jolaurabi School will be travelling to the UK next autumn to perform their new concert, 'I Smile'. They will be visiting us on Friday 14 October and our pupils will be treated to a beautiful concert of traditional Kenyan music and dance. We will aim to undertake charity events in the new school year to help support our friends and demonstrate the spirit of Christian charity valued by our Hugh Sexey CofE Middle School community.

  • Girls' Football: Somerset Cup Finals

Thu 28 Apr 2016 Mr Waterfield
On 27th April, HSMS U12's and U14's girls' football teams represented the school in the Somerset Cup Finals at Street FC.

The U12s girls were up against a very strong Millfield outfit who were very sharp, and excellent all throughout the match.
Our girls kept battling all the way throughout the game and played some excellent football, they certainly made Millfield work hard for the trophy.
We lost 5-1 in the end, but despite the result the girls should be very proud of themselves, especially in the second half when we showed we were the stronger side.

The Under 14's girls were next, against Gordano school, playing on a very big wide pitch, which suited us as we liked to move the ball wide, using our fast wingers who were able to cause problems for the opposition throughout the game.  This was a fantastic game of football to watch; credit to both teams who produced some brilliant football on the day.
Hugh Sexey's were 1-0 down at half time; after a brilliant half time talk with the coach,  the girls came up with a plan to get out there and keep piling on the pressure .  Eventually Hugh Sexey's scored the equaliser; this lifted the girls spirits, and then  two more excellent goals were scored- both shots from outside the area!
After the final whistle was blown Hugh Sexey's were crowned the CHAMPIONS.
Every single one of the girls deserves this success, they have worked so hard to achieve this.

A  great season of girls football by everyone, thank you for all the support throughout the year, it is really appreciated.
  • Somerset Schools Athletics

Wed 27 Apr 2016 Mr McGrath
Congratulations to all of the athletes who represented Hugh Sexey at the Somerset schools athletics meet at Millfield. The standard was very high and the Hugh Sexey squad gave a very good account of itself. The year 7s took part in a quadathlon, consisting of 100m, 800m, shot put and long jump. Steven Jones ran well in the 100m, and Charlotte Watson enjoyed a solid showing in all events. The year 8s took part in a pentathlon, consisting of hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put and 800m. The boys did very well in the hurdles, placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their heat. Lewis Hembrow McKinley enjoyed a fine day placing 10th overall in his first athletic meet.

  • Girls' Rugby SW Finals

Thu 21 Apr 2016 Gareth Waterfield
Yesterday 13 girls from Hugh Sexey's competed in the Schools' Rugby South West Finals at Hornets RFC.

They won the tournament and came away winners, they now are going to represent the South West at the National Finals on Saturday 7th May at Lichfield RFC.

They played 5 games: firstly they were in a pool against schools from Gloucestershire, Cornwall, Devon and Wiltshire, then they played in the final against Kingsbridge, which they won 5 tries to nil. They really were absolutely fantastic. Throughout the day they scored a whopping 34 tries and conceded 0.

The girls' team play, handling, defence, and running rugby has been superb from day one, and all their hard work and dedication in training is now paying off.

These girls deserve to be congratulated; they truly did their school proud.

    They are -
Jess Walrond, Ellen Scantelbury - 8EF

Alyssa Jarvis, Emily Mugford, Gemma Rosati - 8JH
