  • The BIG Award!

Wed 26 Feb 2020 Mrs Scott
We are pleased to announce that the school has achieved the BIG award. This is a national award for excellence in bullying intervention. Our well being ambassadors and staff have worked hard to ensure we are supporting the emotional well being of our young people.
Here is what the director of BIG said about us:

Hugh Sexey Middle School have very high standards when it comes to the welfare of their students.  The school takes bullying very seriously.  Bullying can happen in any school, so Hugh Sexey have a wide range of strategies in place to both prevent and address bullying.  They have a robust anti-bullying policy, they have Anti-bullying Ambassadors who are trained to listen to their peers if they want to talk to someone, they also have regularly trained staff who are confident in dealing with friendship and bullying issues.  They involved the students and their parents in their anti-bullying work, this is the key to preventing bullying.  Their THINK TWICE campaign is excellent and makes students think about their behaviour towards others.   I am so pleased to award this to the school for their first year, and hope they will continue to achieve the BIG Award for Excellence in Challenging Bullying for many years to come.

  • Somerset Schools Junior Cross Country Championship

Wed 12 Feb 2020 Mr Jackson

Nine of our regular cross country runners from Years 7 and 8 braved the conditions to race against the best in the county at King's College in Taunton.

All merit a mention as the biting wind, rain and mud made for a very challenging running experience.  Well done to Emmie, Jemima, Katie, Matilda, Sofia, Charlie, Ellis, Finley and Oli.

All gave a fantastic effort.  Jemima and Finley, both in Year 8, achieved top 10 finishes.  Emmie and Charlie, both in Year 7, achieved top 20 finishes.

  • Year 8 Production - Peter Pan

Mon 10 Feb 2020 Miss Kendall
Last Wednesday and Thursday saw the year 8 production of Peter Pan finally take to the skies! After months of rehearsals the cast gave a fantastic, energetic performance, which was enjoyed by family, staff and pupils alike, including year four pupils from our feeder schools who got to watch the dress rehearsal! While the set and props were made by the year 8 prop club, Mr. Jackson’s digital leaders made the backdrop projections and another team were involved in setting up the staging, while other pupils also managed make-up and hair. It was a real team effort, with around eighty pupils involved, as well as a number of staff. Though the set and costumes have all been cleared away now, and we have finally stopped humming the songs, we hope that the memory of the show and what they achieved will stay with the pupils involved for a long time!
  • U11 Large Schools County Football Finals

Mon 10 Feb 2020 Mr Waterfield
    Weston Super Mare College

Our U11s travelled to Weston Super Mare to represent the school in the county finals.  We took a strong squad but sadly were missing our goal scorer Dylan.

The first game we played was against a school from Portishead; we started the game well and scored the first goal.  Portishead came back strongly and scored two late goals.  The final score was 2-1 to them.

Our next game was against Eastover school from Bridgwater - what a good tough game that was.  It was a very good game and ended in a 1-1 draw after a superb goal from Jack Millford.

The third game was against St Patricks - we scored an early goal and protected the lead, a very good tactical plan from the boys!  We won 1-0.  It was very difficult to play football on a small pitch with small goals.

The fourth game was against a school from Yeovil - the boys used the same tactical plan: to score an early goal and protect the lead.  Harry Suik scored a superb goal and fantastic goal keeping from Turrell kept us in the game!

In the semi-final we played Taunton School - they were an excellent side, a quick tempo passing team, which caught my eye a few times when they were playing.  The game ended 0-0 and went to penalties - sadly it wasn't our day from the penalty spot and we lost the shootout. The saying "that's football for you, and it can be a cruel game" is certainly true!

The boys were superb, played really well as a team, and we all had a great day.  Well done boys.

  • Year 6 Football vs Fairlands

Mon 10 Feb 2020 Mr McGrath
The year 6 travelled to Fairlands with some changes made to the side that did so well in the Somerset finals competition. Harry came in at goalkeeper and there were opportunities for Ronnie, Dylan, Xavier and Liam. Fairlands did well to defend against some early attacks by Hugh Sexey with the Fairlands goalkeeper looking accomplished and commanding. After winning the ball Fairlands moved the ball forward quickly and fluently and finished crisply to put the home side 1-0 up. Hugh Sexey then chased the next goal but were again caught out with a cruel deflection beating the goal keeper. Lesser sides could have given in or sought to find someone or something to blaim. Thankfully this wasn't the case. Jack and Dylan took a real command of the next 10 minutes with all the players around them contributing and looking calm. Harry was a picture of tranquillity in the sweeper role, reminiscent at times to the great Lothar Matthaus. Every time he received the ball he was afforded the opportunity to move the play forward or change the direction of play and he did this with aplomb. He was helped by the fact that either Rueben, Xavier or Ronnie were always looking to push on and provide an outlet. This made more space in midfield for Dylan to pull the strings and set up attacks. Oscar moved from centre forward into centre midfield alongside Dylan and his 30 yard zinger rattled off the crossbar with such force I feared us being billed for a new set of goal posts. The positional switch between Oscar and Alfie seemed to suit this match better with Oscar playing like a footballer 15 years his senior. His range of passing and desire to set up scoring situations coupled with a sharp eye for goal put me in the mind of a young Glen Hoddle. Eventually the visitors got the goal with Jack bundling the ball in after repeated pressure. Jack then got a second when he finished well to take the game to 2-2. Captain Jack had a great game and the 2 goals were just reward for a tireless display of running. Jack played like a real team player and his ability to fill different positions and help those around him was invaluable. 2-2 was a good turn around but Fairlands nearly went in 3-2 with Fin bravely clearing the ball off the line with his face. Thankfully he was OK and at half time the players talked about shooting more when the opportunity was available and moving the ball quicker into the attacking positions. This proved to be great advice as Alfie, Dylan and Fin all scored in quick succession after direct attacks that started from wide positions. Alfie was flourishing in his advanced role and an excellent run and cross from Ronnie was tapped in for him to get his 2nd. As the game opened up Dylan was able to occupy different positions and he really profited from the hard work around him scoring a hat trick and setting up a further 3 goals.. Playing in a false 9 position the Fairland's defence struggled to contain him and at times it was like watching the great Gianfranco Zola as he took up unusual positions and then either passed forward, dribbled or unleashed a shot.
The final score of 8-2 was an unfair reflection on what was for the first 30 minutes a much closer game. The players from both sides should be very proud of how they played.

  • Elmhurst Gymnastics Competition

Tue 04 Feb 2020 Miss Palmer
Four girls from year 5 and four from year 6 travelled to Elmhurst School, Street, last week to take part in a gymnastics competition.
Each girl had to perform a floor routine and a vault, in front of the other schools and judges.
They executed some very hard movement patterns and worked exceptionally well as a team, supporting and encouraging each other throughout the afternoon.
Despite some very tough opposition the girls came away with a team 3rd place and a 5th place.
They are continuing to work hard in the Gymnastics club with Mrs Allen to improve their routines for the next competition.

  • Year 7 Boys' football vs Fairlands

Mon 03 Feb 2020 Mr McGrath
    Year 7 Boys 3 - 1 Fairlands

Midfield maestro Oliver put in a cultured and mature performance to guide Hugh Sexey to a good win in the local derby against Fairlands. You could sense the team were very focussed and determined to put in a good performance. They managed this emotion very well and started the game with intensity but assurance in possession. Michal was colossal in the centre of a 3 man defence. At times he was reminiscent of Virgil Van Dijke. He came out on top in every challenge and at one time raced back to prevent their striker from getting a shot in; but it was his calmness in possession that really set the tone. He always looked to pass the ball on and really marshalled the others around him. The first goal was scored by Oliver after some excellent inter play between him, Eric and the dynamic front 3 of Noah, Archie and Harry. After a lovely return ball he found himself unmarked in the box and didn't need an invitation to slot past the keeper. The midfield pair of Eric and Oliver played brilliantly at times with both boys complementing each others skills. Oliver then turned provider when he played a sumptuous ball for the predator- like Noah to neatly finish. Moments later his weighted diagonal ball was knocked home again by Noah at the near post but he was (rightly) adjudged to be offside. Scott came on after 10 minutes and played with energy and purpose. He played in a number of positions and worked well in all of them. Hugh Sexey kept looking for a 3rd goal and were caught out when a deflected Fairland shot found its way past the impressive George. As the game wore on Hugh Sexey were unable to grab the crucial 3rd goal with a desperate goal line clearance preventing Noah from getting another. In the final minutes Fin came on to add a different outlet and his physical presence and beaming grin clearly unsettled the Fairlands defence. After holding the ball it was worked through to the lively Harry who finished with aplomb. The game ended 3-1 and both sides deserve great credit for the way they played. It was a pleasure to watch and referee this game.
  • Year 8 Football vs Wells Blue

Mon 03 Feb 2020 Mr McGrath
    Year 8 Boys 2 - 3 Wells Blue

The year 8 football team will rue missed opportunities in a close fought game against Wells Blue. Wells Blue started very brightly as Hugh Sexey tried to run off the long commute through the traffic. As they settled they started to assert control with Hugo leading the line energetically. A perfectly played ball by Hugo sent Will through, but he was closed down before a shot could be unleashed. Hugh Sexey continued to find space for the 2 wide attackers of Will and Charlie with Hugo, Dennis and Ellis often exploiting the space behind. Unfortunately a combination of desperate defence and a reluctance to shoot on sight meant that they were unable to register a goal. Wells were full of quality and their skilful midfield created a chance that the striker duely converted. Hugh Sexey continued to push with Dylan, Oliver and the midfield anchor Alex playing with real purpose. Unfortunately the game started to slip out of reach when another quick break by Wells was ruthlessly finished. Hugh Sexey came back, and after some neat approach play Dennis hit a rocket of a shot into the top corner taking the game to 2-1. With Hugh Sexey dominating possession it looked like they might grab an equaliser but they were once again caught in transition, with Wells scoring again to make it 3-1. I was disappointed with some of the players work of the ball and body language and made this known at half time. When representing a team it is essential you give the best account of yourself and encourage others. Sadly I didn't feel every player was doing this as I would expect. The second half was all Hugh Sexey but they were unable to score the elusive goal. Chance after chance was created with Nathan providing another outlet with his rapier pace. George and Riley settled into their defensive duties and  as they moved the ball forward with more purpose space was more easy to find. Hugo's relentless running also meant the defence sat deeper allowing the midfield trio more time on the ball. Nathan hit a great shot across goal to take it to 3-2 but despite a frantic last 5 minutes they were unable to grab the deserved equaliser. Well done to Wells who played with great spirit and energy throughout the game.
