  • DT Christmas Fair raises money for charities.

Mon 18 Dec 2017 Miss Latti
On 11th and 12th December Year 7 pupils hosted the annual DT Christmas Fair as part of their Enterprise project.

Pupils worked in small teams to design and make a batch of Christmas products that could be sold to raise money for a local charity.

Prior to making their products pupils were required to think carefully about the target client for their products and suitable materials/ingredients that would work well for their designs. All products were manufactured using a variety of materials/ ingredients e.g. Textiles, wood, plastic or food. During the project pupils delegated key job roles to each member of their team i.e. Project Manager, Production Manager, Creative Design Manager and Marketing and Finance Manager. These job roles enabled pupils to further develop their Personal Learning and Thinking Skills as well as their mathematical skills, understanding of batch production and quality control.

Year 7 pupils raised £375.92 which will be split between Macmillan Cancer Support and The Trussell Trust Cheddar Valley Foodbank.

Macmillan Cancer Support are supporters, health and social care professionals, volunteers and campaigners who provide support, energy and inspiration to people affected by cancer and their families.

Macmillan Cancer Support are keen to help those people affected by cancer feel more in control of their lives and the money raised will help them to do so during a very difficult time.

The Trussell Trust Cheddar Valley Foodbank provides a minimum of three days’ emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis.

‘I am very proud of all the Year 7 pupils because they have produced a some fantastic products that show creativity. Pupils have put in a lot of hard work and shown great dedication in wanting to make this Christmas Fair a success for two such worthy charities.’

  • U12 Girls Football - What a season these girls are having.....

Mon 18 Dec 2017 Mr Waterfield

Somerset Cup versus Kings Hall - Tuesday 12th December

On Tuesday the girls travelled to Kings Hall in Taunton to play the Somerset Schools Cup.

On a very wet, miserable, and cold day the girls were totally up for a game of football and didn't let the weather beat them.

Hugh Sexey's won the game 4-1, with hat trick from our 'goal machine' Thurling, and a goal scored by Slater. Considering the weather was awful, I was very impressed with the quality of football the girls played; they are a team and they played as a team.

Many thanks goes to Kings Hall for the great hospitality - the girls loved their sausage and chips after the game.

ESFA Nationals Cup versus Crispin - Thursday 14th December

We were very glad to hear that we had been drawn to play a local school, Crispin, for this away National game, as we could have been playing anywhere in the South West.

Hugh Sexey's were dominant right from the first whistle, applying pressure on Crispin, playing decent passing football and putting all the goals into the back of the net.

Credit must go to Crispin for not giving up -  they were a credit to their school.

    .Goals - Slater x4, Thurling x2, Catley-Day x2, Griffiths x1, Pargeter x1, Woodcock x1 and Durrant x1.

Well done girls - absolutely terrific performances. Your dedication and effort in training has been outstanding. Mr Lamb and I have been so impressed with the whole girls' football programme at Hugh Sexey's; to have over 50 girls wanting to play school football is wonderful to see.
We now break up for Christmas and look forward to coming back in January and continuing the great cup run

Have a well deserved rest and great Christmas everyone!

  • Yr8 Somerset Hockey- level 3 tournament

Wed 13 Dec 2017 Mrs Allen
Year 8 Somerset Hockey level 3 tournament.
    Tuesday 12th December

The year eight hockey team have been an absolute pleasure to work with. They have been complimented on their team work and attitude by staff from other schools.
All girls have played with a high level of skill, fitness and determination which lead them a place in the final today held at the Milfield Astro pitches.
Having reached the level three competition by beating Fairlands in a closely fought match, held at Wells Blue, the team captained by Isobel Clarke turned up to school on a very icy cold morning. ( early)
The first game was  against Castle School from Taunton.  It was a little difficult with cold conditions but Mia Johnson scored an early goal.  The midfield  was strong with Rhiannon Kelly and Ella Hodgson showing their  expertise and experience .
A second goal was scored in the second half which meant that the final score was2-0 to HSMS. A great start.
The Second Match was against Holyrood Academy from Chard. Milly Court gave her all in this match. The opposition scored an early goal, which was immediately met with a superb goal from Ella. Milly Thomas in goal performed well and despite a dodgy kicker she cleared the ball a few times. In the second half , the opposition went onto score two more goals. Final score Holyrood 3- HSMS 1
The third and final match was against Chilton Trinity. The girls , suddenly realising this was to be their final game together as Hugh Sexeys came alive. Their aim for each player to score.
Scarlett Smith achieved a sneaky goal, Hannah Carter scored two great goals, Mia found her form , Ashling Kelway set the goals up. And just before the final whistle Jessie Haines , who has been the top goal scorer this season , placed a neat goal into the net.
The final score HSMS 7 - Chilton Trinity 1
Thanks to Evie Jones for her support as assistant coach.
Overall the team finished second in the competition.
A truly remarkable group of young ladies. It has been my privilege to teach and work alongside them. I sincerely hope they will continue to thrive in hockey.

    Busking for the Amber Trust

On Thursday 7th December, Poppy (playing the violin), Millie Jo (singing), Rosie (singing), Rosie (singing) and Matilda (playing the flute) busked in the school playground, playing christmas carols and ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi.

We were raising money for the Amber Trust, a charity that helps blind or partially sighted children through music.

They have established The Amber Music Awards which pay for music lessons, music therapy sessions, musical instruments, music software such as Sibelius, concert tickets and travel related to musical activities.

It is a great charity and we thank everyone who gave us their spare change, you have made a difference however much you gave. We are very grateful and extremely proud to support this amazing charity!

We also hope to be busking again for the Amber Trust in Wells on Sunday, weather permitting!

  • Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2017/18

Mon 04 Dec 2017 Mrs Warrell

This year's theme was "The Future of Peace"

Congratulations to Matilda, 8DJ, whose poster has been chosen as the winner of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest 2017-18 at Hugh Sexey C of E Middle School.

Well done also to the two Runners up, Suzanna (8EF) and Beth (8RT), and to all of the pupils in Year 8 who took part in this annual competition.  The posters are judged on their originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the theme, which this 30th Anniversary Year was “The Future of Peace”.  The judges were particularly impressed with the many thoughtful ways in which pupils had expressed the theme.  The President of Cheddar Vale Lions Club will present Matilda, Suzanna and Beth with their certificates and prizes at an assembly in the New Year.

Matilda’s poster will now be judged in the SW District level of the contest, so we wish her good luck and continued success.
