  • Sports Day

Thu 22 Jul 2021 Mr McGrath

After a long absence it was so pleasing to have the year groups out again and enjoying school sport. Adaptions were made for the Sports days with the competition being set in tutor groups. It was so pleasing to see all our pupils involved and was an excellent way to bring an end to an unusual and at times challenging year.

I hope all the pupils are proud of their contributions. Over the 4 days we saw boys and girls challenge themselves whilst still showing excellent compassion towards other pupils. There were numerous stand out performances throughout the week and I hope the pupils can reflect on their efforts and that it motivates them to continue to work hard. There were new records set in year 5 and year 8. Libby set a new year 5 record in the girls 1500m with a time of 6 minutes and 22 seconds. This broke Katie Radfords record from 2017 and put Libby alongside big brother Finley in the record books. Jack from year 8 also broke Matthew Fotheringham's 2005 record in the welly throw with a huge distance of 29m 33.

It was special to have all the pupils out competing again and I was so proud to see the level of performance on display and the excellent spirit shown by our pupils. Many thanks also to all the student volunteers who gave up their time to help others.

  • HSMS Race For Life raises over £3,700.

Thu 22 Jul 2021 Mrs Le Hunte and Mr McGrath

Race for Life - Race for life took place on a beautiful , albeit boiling hot Friday on the playing fields of Hugh Sexey. 6 laps of the course and a final few paces equated to the 5 kilometre distance. Many of the pupils completed the course in impressive time whilst others enjoyed a rather lower intensity stroll. All should feel proud as they played a part in raising an impressive sum of money for charity and helped contribute to an excellent whole school event; the total raised was £3,799.

The drinks and ice-cold refreshments served by the catering team were very well received, as were the medals that helped reinforce the effort put it. It was a pleasure to be a part of it, and to see the pupils and staff supporting oneanother.

  • Bikeability.

Thu 22 Jul 2021 Mr McGrath

Bikeability - It was very pleasing to have the people from bikeability in again and putting our year 6 pupils through their cycling qualifications. The two day course covered lots of ground culminating in a final assessment on the roads. Grace and Mr Waterfield helped the pupils throughout the day and said the advances made were impressive. We look forward to having them in again soon.

  • Year 8 Sports Awards

Tue 20 Jul 2021 Mr McGrath

    Year 8 Sports Awards

It was a pleasure to have our year 8 pupils together again to celebrate their sporting success at Hugh Sexey. Last year's event took place over Zoom so it was pleasing to gather in the picturesque surrounds of the school fields and remember past events and sporting glories. Hopefully Zoom presentations for Sports Awards will remain a thing of the past. The last 18 months has had an impact on what the year 8s could do in a sporting capacity. National cups, sport leaders events, festivals and fixtures are just some of the things we usually take for granted that have been taken from us. It is a credit to the 8s that their love of sport hasn't diminished, and I hope the absence helps fuel their desire to compete.

There were awards for a range of sports and we as a PE team were really thrilled with the way the 8s conducted themselves and enjoyed the occasion. I am sure they will attend many more events like this as they continue their sporting journeys.

To mark Mr Waterfield's departure from Hugh Sexey, I felt it was fitting that a new award was created in his name. The Gareth Waterfield Cup will now be awarded to the pupil who we feel fully invests themself into the School sport program: an athlete who attends multiple clubs, conducts themselves in the right manner and gives up time to support and help others. This year several names were suggested but in the end, it was fitting that Jack Hillman would be the first name on the trophy. Jack has been an excellent sport leader and he instinctively looks to help others.

The boys and girls award for outstanding achievement were awarded to Finley Bendle and Izzy Boxer. Finley has captained the School Cricket and Rugby teams and been a frequent member of school football sides. He has shown himself to be a person who is always looking to improve, and he has been an excellent ambassador for the school. He promotes positive values and is a role model to the other pupils at the school. Izzy has shown herself to be an excellent all-round athlete and a pupil who sets herself very high standards.  Since year 5 she has always worked hard to improve, and she gives the impression that she loves to take part in sport and compete. She has been a frequent member of school sides, excelling in the sports of netball, gymnastics and dance. We wish these pupils well for the future and hope they continue to pursue their sporting goals.

The presentation ended with a final word from Mr Waterfield. The pupils were keen to pass on their thanks to a member of staff who has given so much to the pupils and the PE department during his 20 years at HSMS.

  • Viking Settlements -Year 5

Tue 06 Jul 2021 Fin, Breu, Flora & Sienna

Recently, Year 5 have been studying Viking settlements and the kind of landscape they were looking for to settle in. Examples of these could be rivers and flat land: flat land for growing crops. Rivers for fish, transport, resources and fertile soil for crops. It was fun because we got to make it as well!  Report written by Fin, Breu, Flora and Sienna
