  • British Schools Pistol Shooting Championships

Mon 28 Nov 2022 Mrs Bury

Three of our pupils -Ferris, Lulu and Liv- had a great experience on Friday at Leweston School where they were competing in the South West England qualifier for the British Shooting Schools Pistol Championships.

There were 88 entrants in the Junior section; Liv (6ILH) achieved 31st place overall and came 3rd in year 6.

Lulu (7JA) gained 14th place overall and came 3rd in year 7. Ferris (8KA) missed out on the direct elimination round by 2 points, but achieved a respectable 10th place overall and 7th in his year group.

It was a great achievement for the HSMS Team to come 4th against some much bigger schools; well done Ferris, Lulu and Liv.

  • KS2 Rugby vs Fairlands

Thu 24 Nov 2022 Mr Banwell

On the 17th of November a number of Year 5 and 6 pupils travelled to Fairlands to compete in two matches: tag rugby for the year 5s and contact rugby for the year 6s. In the year 5 match Sexeys started really well with tries from William and George giving Sexeys the start we wanted. Over in the year 6 match it looked very competitive and even between the two teams. William and Jack both had very good starts to the game. At half time it's too close to decide who’s winning in either game with both schools putting up good performances.

After half time both games were exciting to watch.  The year 5 game was end to end play, with Alfie putting on a great show. However, Fairlands had the better second half and won the game overallo.

Over in the year 6 match both teams gave it their all and the final score was a 7-7 draw.

All the players put 100% into the games which were a great watch. Thanks to Fairlands school for hosting us.

  • Hockey Development Day at Millfield

Thu 24 Nov 2022 Mrs Allen

It was great to be able to meet with other schools across Somerset for a day of hockey after a long break due to Covid. The year 8 girls have all been incredibly

reliable at club on a Thursday and this was a good reward for their hard work .

Captained beautifully by Tilly C the girls played well against 6 other schools. This was a non-competitive event - an opportunity to play hockey on the immaculate pitches at Millfield .

Inspiring performances from all : Chloe and Katie who both proved very reliable sweepers .

Attack was strong from Iris, Sayba and Sophia . Gracie and Hattie were fast on the wing and Mara, Amelie , Leila and Honey solid as midfielders and Goalkeeper.

The girls won Four , drew one and lost one - not that we were counting!

Thank you to Hayley at SASP for the organisation.

  • Hugh Sexey Remembers

Wed 16 Nov 2022 Mr Tatterton

Thank you to all the pupils, staff and special guests who joined us today for our Service of Remembrance.  I am always amazed by the respect the pupils show for the event and how supportive and proud they all are of their classmates who take an active role in the service.  Special recognition goes out to our musicians (Sebastian, Oscar and Parker), to the girls who wrote and performed a poem recognising the service of their tutor group’s VC award recipient (Lily Rose and Tabby), and to the Combined Cadet Force (Ferris, Aidan, Daxie, Oliver, Connor, Alex, Finley and Erin) who proudly paraded our First World War banner around our cenotaph.  We were treated to a small RAF vintage aircraft flypast of two aircraft at the close of the service – thank you to Mr Mike Laundy, former parent).  We are also very proud of Georgiana and Ben who represented HSMS at the WLT Service of Remembrance and who did a lovely reading.  For any of our school community who are unable to attend a Remembrance Service this weekend and would wish to, today’s assembly has been uploaded and you welcome partake in your own moment of reflection.

  • Cross Country race at Collett Park

Mon 14 Nov 2022 Mr Jackson

Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League - race 2

A team of 13 runners from Years  5 and 6 took part in the second race of the Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League 2022/23.

The race was held at Collett Park in Shepton Mallet in near dusk conditions.

We had top 10 finishes from Bethany and Louis and top 20 finishes from Chloe, Charlie, Henry and Will.  These are impressive performances with over 70 runners taking part in the Years 5&6 girls race and over 100 runners in the Years 5&6 boys race.

Three of our team were debutants; well done and welcome to Chloe, Gabrielle and George.  Of those who had run before, most improved on their position from the last race.

Such were the strong performances throughout our runners that our girls team achieved 4th out of 20 schools and our boys team 3rd out of 26 schools.

  • Bottoms- Up Rugby at Millfield

Mon 14 Nov 2022 Mr Banwell

On the 9th of November Hugh Sexeys travelled to Millfield School which was  hosting a bottoms up Rugby competition to inspire people to join rugby clubs. The games that were played consisted of both tag games and some contact rugby. We had two teams who played in the competition.  Both teams did really well in every game, and although some games were very challenging, all the boys did themselves proud.

Ted had a fantastic day, scoring lots of tries and helping his team drive forward to victory. On the other team, Marley also had a brilliant day and scored some amazing tries, helping his team play some top rugby. Overall the day went really well and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you to all the boys and Millfield for putting on a really fun day!

  • Schools' Shooting Championships - Wales

Thu 10 Nov 2022 Mrs Bury

Last week Ferris (8KA) and Liv (6ILH) competed in the Welsh School's Pistol Shooting Championship where they attained very respectable scores.

The Welsh Championships were a completely new experience for them, with hi-tech equipment in place of the paper targets they are used to. They had to shoot into light boxes in a line-up of 24 competitors. After 20 shots Liv achieved a score of 131 and Ferris 154 which put him in 3rd place and a 'shoot out' with the 8 highest scoring shooters.  2 shots each under command and the lowest score sat out, Ferris finished in 6th place overall.

The next competition is the South West Champs on Friday 25th November.  Lulu (7JA) will join Ferris and Liv for this event so that they can enter as a School team as well as individuals.

We wish all three of them good luck.

  • Year 4 Girls' Football Festival - Wedmore Astro pitches

Thu 10 Nov 2022 Mrs Allen

It was great to be able to utilise the fantastic resource at Wedmore. Thank you so much for allowing this to happen - Matt Coggins.

Our sports leaders travelled by minibus and were soon met with participants from Wedmore, Weare, East Brent and Mark first schools. Six players at any one time from each school and it was soon clear we had some very keen young players , obviously inspired by the Lionesses earlier this year.

Sports leaders took on the roles of referees, coaches, and administrators. They played their part with kindness and maturity.

It was quite professional to watch the young girls play under floodlights.

Some close matches and some impressive goalkeeping .

    Final Result

    4th Mark School

    3rd Wedmore School

    2nd Weare School

    1st East Brent

Thank you to all for their support and encouragement.

  • Hockey Derby: HSMS vs Fairlands at Kings of Wessex

Tue 08 Nov 2022 Mrs Allen

I was glad that this fixture went ahead as rain looked like it might stop play earlier in the day.

Four teams travelled to Kings to play the annual derby against Fairlands.

    Year seven A and B teams .

Year seven girls have been very enthusiastic about hockey this term and we were able to play two strong teams . The B team got off to a great start and adjusted well to the new surface. There was some excellent play from the midfield and Lulu was voted player of the team by the opposition . Kyla managed to score two goals - one in the first half and one in the second. Fairlands also scored but the goal score was 2-1 to Hugh Sexey

    A team

This team showed great support for each other in this match . No score in the first half but very soon in the second half Gracie Sneaked an early goal for Hugh Sexey

There was a second goal for us soon after making the final score 2-0 to Hugh Sexey

Player of the match was Poppy .

    Ks 3 Boys

I was very impressed with the standard of play in this game. The boys showed their stick skills with skilful reverse stick passes and the occasional flick.

The captain , Michael was voted player of the match and the final score was 2-0 to Hugh Sexey . Special mention to the only year seven player Henry who went from this match to hockey trials in Bristol.

    Year eight team

The year eight girls have been very reliable and dedicated to hockey . Special mention to Sayba and Iris who have not missed a practice in three years . Iris scored on the first half and then Fairlands equalised . The opposition scored a winning goal in the second half .

Final score was 2-1 to Fairlands. Player of the match was Trinity , Sophia and Sayba .

Thank you to all our families for the great support .
