  • Greek Day for Year 5

Wed 25 May 2016 Miss Ball
On Tuesday 25th May, Year 5 enjoyed a day of activities to learn about life as an Ancient Greek. Children and teachers entered into the spirit of the day by dressing in Greek costume. Activities included Greek Maths problems, Olympic activities, Trojan horse debate and making Greek vases. The highlight of the day was a drama workshop based on Greek myths led by fantastic storyteller, Clive Pig.
Here are some comments from members of Year 5:
"It has been really fun and we've learnt a lot, " William B.
"It was great to bring to life some of the myths of the Ancient Greek Gods. One of my favourite Gods is Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and beauty, because love conquers all." Brayden.
"It has been fun and it was exciting to have a visitor in to tell us even more about Greece," Scarlett.
"It was funny to see the teachers and pupils walking around school in their amazing Greek costumes. Some people were taking the role very seriously!" Freya.
  • Space Detective visits Year 5

Wed 25 May 2016 Mrs Edmonds
On Wednesday 4th May, Year 5 were very lucky to be visited by Jo Richardson, Space Detective.  Jo is one of 50 UK Space Ambassadors for the International Space Station and has communicated with our very own British astronaut, Tim Peake!

Jo taught us lots about Tim’s journey to the stars and how he travelled there in a Russian rocket.  We watched videos of the launch, the orbit of the ISS around the Earth and spectacular photos of Earth taken by the astronauts.  We learned that the astronauts on board the ISS can watch a sunset or sunrise every 45 minutes!

She told us of the many recent space discoveries, including the fact that Pluto is covered in graphite!  Although she was able to answer lots of our questions she informed us that there is still much we don't know about Space, including why Space is black.

It was an extremely enjoyable and interesting morning which has hugely inspired us as we continue our Earth and Space topic in Science.

  • Yr 8 Cricket: HSMS vs Wells Blue

Fri 20 May 2016 Mr McGrath
The year 8 cricket team secured their first win of the season, hitting 91 in a 12 overs home game against Wells Blue. Establishing a cricket team has been a work in progress, but thanks to the drive of James Barber, Mitch Simpson, Alex Cave Calland and George Gas we managed to field a strong side despite some last minute unavailability.  Wells Blue looked a strong outfit, and the signs were ominous after the first over when their opening pair hit a number of 4s. Thankfully Barber and the arrival of Harry Harris steadied the team and slowed down Wells' scoring. With 90 to beat, Hugh Sexey had to batt with purpose and they did just that. Under the steady guidance of Simpson, Gas hit a number of 4s and was then joined by Richard Hillgrove who put on a batting masterclass to help reach 91 in the final over.
Well done to all involved, and many thanks to Mr Waterfield and Mr Jackson for all their hard work developing the team. Practice continues to be after school on a Tuesday and during Friday lunch hour.
  • Year 2 Multi Skills Festival

Fri 20 May 2016 Mr McGrath
Well done to all involved in the year 2 multi skills festival. The weather was threatening to rain all day but thankfully the skies cleared for a spectacular afternoon of sport. With year 8 exams on the year 7s had a chance to lead the festival and they didn't disappoint. It was very pleasing to see them lead so well and the 1st schools enjoyed a very active and fun afternoon.
Thanks to Mr Waterfield and Mr Lamb for all of their hard work arranging the day.
  • Year 7 Boys Cricket

Fri 20 May 2016 Mr McGrath

The Y7 boys cricket team lost in a reduced 20 overs game after a rain delay.

Holyrood  scored 112 for 5.  In reply, HSMS scored 47 for 9 and so lost by 65 runs.  Holyrood simply had a bowling attack that was too good for us, restricting us almost entirely to singles.

Jacob Westbrook was our star performer.  Equal highest batting score (with George Ryan) of 9 and very good bowling with 11 for 1 off his 4 overs.

Many thanks to Mr Jackson for working so hard to establish and develop the side.

  • Congratulations to Gareth Waterfield

Tue 10 May 2016 Mr McGrath

Congratulation to Mr Gareth Waterfield who has been nominated by the Rugby Football Union for the prestigious Presidents Award. Gareth is 1 of 4 people nominated for the People power award and it is a fitting tribute to the tireless work he has invested into Junior Rugby both in School time and for Winscombe RFC. His enthusiasm and knowledge has had a significant impact on the students at Hugh Sexey, and their success is a testament to his ability as a coach. On the 29th May Gareth will be treated to a 3 course dinner with England's record cap holder and president Jason Leonard. He will also get to watch the England and Wales game that day.

We wish Gareth all the very best, and are delighted he has been nominated for this award.
