  • Book Fair Bonanza

Wed 13 Dec 2023 Mrs Moir

Huge thanks to all of the parents, carers and guardians who supported the school Book Fair - we raised a whopping £1856.37 This will give us significant rewards to spend with Scholastic for new books over the year and makes a massive difference to the library.

We hope that your children are all enjoying their new books, it was lovely to see so much enthusiasm from our budding readers!

Many thanks to our fabulous pupil Librarians who gave up their time to help support the event, it wouldn't have been possible without their help.

    Kind regards

    The Library team.

Year 8 Hugh Sexey Bake Off

Over the course of this term, Year 8 pupils in Group B have participated in the annual Hugh Sexey Bake Off. During the Bake-Off pupils were assessed on their hygiene and safety, organisation, preparation of ingredients, cooking and presentation skills. Once again pupils have excelled themselves with their high levels of technical baking skills, fantastic creativity and unique combination of flavours whilst creating their baked food product within the set time constraints. It was pleasure seeing pupils enjoying the subject and taking great pride in their work. Well done to all those involved!

Next term, the DT department look forward to seeing the wonderful creations made by pupils in Group A.

  • Year 7 Savouries.

    Year 7 Food and Nutrition

Over the course of this term, Year 7 pupils in Group B have been learning how to prepare and cook a range of savoury dishes safely whilst learning about traditional dishes cooked by other cultures. Pupils have developed their understanding of the importance of feeding themselves and others a healthy and balanced diet. In theory lessons pupils have learnt about bacteria, food hygiene, the basic dietary requirements linked to NHS recommendations and the sources and functions of macronutrients, so they understand why they are needed by the body. It has been a wonderful to see pupils develop a passion for cooking!

  • Yr 7 Rugby vs St. Dunstan's

Thu 07 Dec 2023 Mr Sawkins

The Year Seven boys represented Hugh Sexey at an away game against St. Dunstan's school. The behaviour shown by all Year Seven boys was exemplary and is a real testament to their character. Year seven presented themselves well from the get-go, demonstrating a well-practiced and professional passing drill as part of the warm-up. As Captain of the team Jack demonstrated strong leadership from the off, offering clear direction to the team for both defensive and offensive play. Jack also made correct, quick decisions for when to receive and kick the ball and demonstrated a good example of how to interact with a referee. The first half saw two tries scored by St. Dunstan's-with one physically imposing player making large amounts of ground, often stopped by low and committed tackles from Oliver T.

Year Seven dominated the majority of the game, maintaining possession for most of the play. A variety of runs and tries were scored by Louis, who showed his endurance and amazing ability to fix a player, before rapidly side-stepping and breaking through the line. Louis was often supported by Oliver and Oliver, who worked together as fantastic pack leads. The back line was well utilised, with Harrison scoring multiple tries, due to an excellent ability to receive the ball at speed,  coupled with an incredible turn of pace which could not be matched. Jack continually demonstrated his impressive ability to read a Rugby Pitch, and made successive successful runs and tries, aided by both Louis and Rohan B offering support when needed. Rohan B was awarded player of the match for impressive endurance and playing multiple positions throughout, acting as both inside center and gaining valuable ground - avoiding the contact where necessary, whilst conversely often being the first to a breakdown, demonstrating an impressive robustness when faced with a considerably larger opposition prop.

In the second half of the game the rotating front five made successive smaller but continuous gains, utilising strong runs from Austin, Blake and Logan - particularly from well-planned penalties, whilst being constantly well-supported by Jake, Oliver and Oliver. Supportive play practiced in afterschool training drills was well demonstrated by the forwards, with good teamwork. This caused all of the opposition forwards to commit, allowing breaks and tries to be made on both wings.

The game finished 60-10 - a very convincing win - with a commendable performance by all.

  • Somerset Girls' Football Cup

Wed 06 Dec 2023 Mr McGrath

    Somerset Under 12s Cup

    Hugh Sexey 7 - 0 Selwood

Selwood travelled to Hugh Sexey in round 2 of the girls Under 12s Cup. Some of the girls selected had played the week before in the girls Under 14s game against Wadham. That experience would prove valuable. On the back of her commanding performance against older girls, Brooke was made Captain and she flourished in that role. Prior to the game she ensured there was a sense of togetherness in the group and the feeling of excitement and optimism was evident. The side was picked (as always) on account of the players who had committed the most to training. The bench was powerful with Amisha, Etta, Lily, Beth and Harriet all experienced club players.

The game started in cagey fashion with both sides looking like they didn't want to make a mistake. Florence started to grow into the game and we started to get a lot of joy with moving the ball into the left hand side. Both sides had chances with Isabelle striking the post after a well worked corner. Sophie was a rock at the back, and her ability to get possession and launch attacks with her inciteful forward passes from the back proved to be the way Hugh Sexey would play the game. After 20 minutes the score was 0-0 and there wasn't a lot between the two sides. Amisha and Harriet were introduced and they were able to slot into a settled formation and have a really positive impact on the game. Harriet, who played in an attacking midfield role, showed immense ability on the ball. She made some wonderful passes early on and had the ability to beat the first, and sometimes second and third player to set up attacking opportunities. Her link up play with Amisha, Bethany and Florence was sublime and it was only a matter of time before goals came. The first was a neat finish by Harriet after great work from Verity and Sophie. The second was an unfortunate own goal for Selwood after relentless pressure from the Hugh Sexey attackers. It says everything about this group of players that they didn't over celebrate this goal and instead showed excellent emotional intelligence. Amisha then made an excellent run down the right and crossed for Harriets 2nd Goal. Harriet then turned provided with a great pass through the defense for Amisha to finish emphatically.

The game finished 7-0 with all the players making a huge contribution. Harriet finished the game with 5 goals which is remarkable for a year 6 playing a year up. What really struck me about her performance was how well she was able to link up play. In patches we played some really good and positive football with every player looking to have the ball and help keep it.

Onwards and upwards to our next game against Hayesfield.

Player of the Match - Verity. She never stopped working on and off the ball and made it very difficult for the opposition to get going. She also contributed to the attacking play. A lot of the attacking players made the noticeable contributions but it was our discipline when defending that set this platform.
