  • Share a Pencil Day

Fri 28 Apr 2017 Ms Taylor

On Monday 24th April, Hugh Sexey pupils took part in the first international ‘Share a Pencil Day’ which aims to raise awareness of the issues affecting children's' ability to access good education, worldwide.

Working with the not-for-profit organization, ‘Hope’ and their Bright Futures campaign, ‘Share a Pencil Day’ aims to raise £10,000 for essential education and schools projects run by Plan International UK. Plan International UK is a children's charity that has been supporting vulnerable children for over 75 years. Helping children move themselves from a life of poverty to a future with opportunity Plan International UK work in many areas including; emergency and famine relief, health and sanitation, economic empowerment, as well as education. All the monies given through our Hope Bright Futures campaign is being ring-fenced exclusively for children's' education projects.

Pupils at HSMS enjoyed an assembly given by Mr Evan Lewis from ‘Hope’ and then pupils participated in the ‘World’s Largest Lesson’ to learn about the United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development, and focusing on ‘Why are so many children not in school?’ The Day was a wonderful success and children went away feeling much more connected and aware of the issue. They also raised over £80 to contribute to the Bright Futures Campain through the sale of Share a Pencil Day pencils.

  • U12s Girls' Football - Somerset Champions

Tue 25 Apr 2017 Mr Waterfield
Yesterday our U12 girls played their Somerset Schools Cup final against Crispin at Street FC.

For the first 15 minutes both teams had opportunities to score and everyone thought this would be a tight game.

Hugh Sexey back three -Evie Jones, Evie Clements, and Grace Adams- were solid all afternoon, protecting goalkeeper Millie Thomas; Millie  made some cracking saves and her kicking was superb.

Midfield trio - Harriet Griffiths, Millie Pargeter and skipper Daisy Moss - were all superb, and played some fantastic passing football, which provided our strikers Jessie Woodcock and Izzy Cook all the opportunities  they needed to score.

Replacements were Jemima Thurling, who came on the pitch and scored instantly, Philippa Griffiths and Emilie Peake, both of whom  continued the great work the team were doing.

The whole squad was fantastic, and it was a true team effort  which saw Hugh Sexey's win 6-0; Izzy Cook and Jemima Thurling both scored a hat-trick. The quality of football played by everyone was great to watch.

Mr Waterfield and Mr Lamb are very pleased with how these girls have played all season, they totally deserve their success. This is the first year we have actually won the U12s cup; we have been in the final before but never actually won it. Well Done girls.

  • U11 Boys' Basketball Finals at Millfield

Tue 25 Apr 2017 Mr Waterfield

Last Thursday our U11 boys went to Millfield to compete in the Basketball SASP finals. The level of basketball that was shown on this day by other schools were very high. Most of the schools had very tall players who were able to score from rebounds easily.

Hugh Sexey's boys were superb all afternoon, we played 7 games throughout the day, won 3, lost 4, which saw us finish 4th overall out of seven teams.

This is a truly fantastic achievement, especially as most of the schools we play against had club basketball players, and were a lot more experienced than us.

As the day went along our boys improved massively and got more confident with themselves.  We finished our last game losing 2-1 against the champions, Trinity School, who had thrashed everyone else all day. They were very complimentary about our boys, who gave them their hardest test of the day.

Congratulations boys, you were superb to watch and it was a great day of Sport.
