  • Year 8 House Hockey

Wed 18 Dec 2019 Mrs Allen
This was the first time that the year 8s played the full 11aside game . Thanks to Julie Rodgers of Cheddar ladies hockey club for lending us the extra GK kit.
The matches lasted twenty minutes and all girls got to play for their house. There were some outstanding moments of hockey. The Vikings got off to a good start. Despite playing in the cup team this morning at Millfield , Jemima S was very dominant in midfield and footballer, Maddie D dribbled well past the opponents.
All four GK played brilliantly. Olivia G and Sarah W kicking the ball wide of the goal with confidence. Phoebe and Scarlet showed their experience with great reactions to some hard hitting attempts at goal from Charli B in particular.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and the year eight girls all joined in with a cheerful and good humoured approach.
Thank you to Mrs. Scott for her support as always.
    The results were as followed
    1st Vikings
    2nd Normans
    3rd Saxons
    4th Celts

Players of the house competition : Freya Wills and Jemima Seagrove.

Our school choir and instrumentalists performed at Wells Cathedral as part of a joint Christmas Service with Kings of Wessex and Fairlands schools. The choir sang both their solo pieces (Just Another Star and The Angel’s Song) with perfection and enjoyed participating in the joint carols especially their verse of Gaudette.
  • Author visits KS2

Tue 17 Dec 2019 Mr Fairbanks
'Key Stage Two pupils had an inspirational morning with visiting author Robin Etherington of the Etherington Brothers. This interactive and engaging event showed our pupils how to create original ideas and characters to inspire and fascinate readers.  It was a fantastic morning about the power of creativity and the imagination, with lots of ideas about how to plan and write your own stories.'
  • U13 Girls Football - Somerset Cup AWAY Bucklers Mead

Tue 17 Dec 2019 Mr Waterfield

Hugh Sexey were drawn against Bucklers Mead School AWAY for the second round of the Somerset Cup Match.

Hugh Sexey's started the match very brightly, playing some superb football.

Ella Saxon opened the scoring account after hammering home a great finish from the corner. Shortly after Maddy Durrant/Olivia Fuller both scored. Despite being 3-0 up, we were still hungry and kept the pressure on, and further goals came from Durrant to complete her hat-trick; a superb finish by Olivia Fuller to put us 6-0 up at half time.

In the second half we rang some changes and played some players out of position, which was good to see.  Further goals from Maddy Durrant, Freya Wills and Olivia Fuller meant we ended the game on 9-0.

A special mention should go to Cerys Webb for another solid display between the posts. Also to Gabby Hallett for a great game, playing as centre back.  All the girls were fabulous and played some really smart football.  Well done, keep up the good work in training and keep enjoying your school football.

  • Year 7 DT Christmas Fair

Thu 12 Dec 2019 Miss Latti

On Wednesday 11th December Year 7 pupils hosted the annual DT Christmas Fair as part of their DT Enterprise Project.

Pupils have spent the term working in small teams learning how to design and manufacture a batch of innovative Christmas products that could be produced using recycled materials/ minimal resources to help reduce wastage. The products would then be sold to raise money for a charity of their choice. As well as focusing on the aesthetics of their products pupils had to show consideration of the function and quality control.

Prior to manufacturing their products pupils were required to think carefully about making sure the products met the needs of their target user/client and suitable materials/ingredients that would work well for their designs.

Pupils had a brilliant time selling their products at the fair. The year group raised a fantastic £727.19 surpassing the amount raised last year (£587.82). They have decided to donate the money raised to Ups and Downs South West (enables people with Down’s syndrome live full and rewarding lives), RSPCA North Somerset Branch (supports animal welfare work) and Weston Hospice Care.

‘The DT Department are very proud of all the Year 7 pupils because they have produced a great variety of amazing products that show excellent originality. Pupils have put in a lot of hard work in class and during lunchtime clubs. They have shown great dedication in wanting to make this Christmas Fair a success'.

  • Year 7 Visits to Hinkley B Power Station

Mon 09 Dec 2019 Mrs Adair
On Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th of November, sixty Year 7 pupils had the opportunity to travel to Hinkley Point B to learn about the Nuclear Energy sector.  The visit combines learning and theory from both Humanities and Science. The pupil were able to see the reactors from the viewing gallery and even got to observe the control room.  They all commented on how 'old-school' it seems now.  The pupils learned how nuclear energy is a low-carbon option for electricity generation and how safe and highly regulated the industry is.  It is an exciting time on site, as the construction of Hinkley Point C is well underway.  The pupils were very interested in the the many job opportunities they new power station is and will create in our local area.
  • Year 5 House Matches

Mon 09 Dec 2019 Mr McGrath
Well done to the Normans and Vikings who emerged as winners in their first House rugby competition at Hugh Sexey.
The early morning pitch inspection was done with some trepidation. A frost had settled over night and the bitterly cold weather gave the impression that the event may have to be cancelled. Thankfully the sun rose over Wedmore and by 10.15 it was a perfect morning for rugby.
The Normans were the winners in a closely contested contact competition, getting 2 wins and a draw and narrowly beating an impressive Saxons team in the process. Jamie was often on hand to chop down the attackers and in one passage he made an effective tackle during each phase. I was very pleased with the number of phases that were put together. This suggests to me that the players have made great strides in their tackle technique but also shows a presence of mind that the ball carrier knows when and where to offload or hold onto the ball. George was a menace throughout and really got involved, especially around the ruck area. As the games progressed he established a better grasp of the off side laws and managed to select when to apply pressure. Charlie, Ewart and Michael added pace and cunning to the Normans team and the two Wills gave a real ball carrying threat. Finley was a constant threat with the ball and one of his mazy runs almost resulted in an excellent individual score but the defence managed to scramble back. Austin performed with distinction for the Saxons. He carried with purpose, showed excellent defence and looked to encourage and involve the other players. The whole morning was full of lovely examples of sportsmanship. Players from opposing sides helped each other and showed concern if a player was injured; before one important game a Saxon helped tie a Normans shoe lace, and in a very close game Thomas told a referee that his foot had gone into touch moments before he scored what would have been a crucial try. It is times like this that you appreciate what a lovely environment we are part of and how sport can represent so many different facets of life.
Many thanks must be given to the sport leaders who were excellent throughout and to Mr May who took the tag competition and looked to be having as much fun as the pupils. Thanks also to the teachers and support staff who helped throughout.
  • Year 7 Boys House Matches

Mon 09 Dec 2019 Mr McGrath
The year 7 boys House matches exceeded all my expectations and produced some truly thrilling rugby in both the tag and the full contact matches. The attitude and camaraderie of the players was quite inspiring and they should be immensely proud of how well they performed. This was ably supported by the sport leaders who were excellent at assisting the refereeing and supporting the players.
The Celts secured the most points in the tag competitions but rugby was the real winner. At times I had to stand back and watch as the rugby was of such a high standard. Players attacked space, made calculated decisions with the ball and showed a real togetherness in defence. It was a real pleasure to see the enjoyment and skill on display. Coden was a real talisman for his House. Possibly the most physical and abrasive tag player I have ever seen. He constantly put pressure on the opponents and looked to drive over the gain line. Young George played with a similar level of gusto and calculated aggression. Although new to the game he understood that by attacking the space as opposed to the face he could attract multiple defenders meaning other players could profit from the space created, and boy did they profit. The joy of rugby for me is that it encompasses so many different skills and the variety is what can make a team successful and enjoyable to watch. All of the players showed creativity at some stage, but the sheer magic and impish nature of Elliot, Calen, Joe and Edwin meant that opposing defenders were unsure whether to bite in on the ball player or drift onto the wrap around attacking players. This ultimately made space in areas of the pitch and this was something the pacey players like Jagger, Marcus, Matthew and Zack exploited by running into the gaps. I can not explain how pleased I was with the players performance and I hope they continue to enjoy the game.

The contact games were a little more one sided with the Vikings squad packed full of school rugby players. To the credit of the other Houses they did not let that deter them, and all of the Houses battled well and showed immense spirit and skill. Sam came in for a lot of praise from Mr Waterfield on account of his ferocious tackling and non stop work around the ruck. He is calculating enough to understand when to go for the ball and jackal and when to counter ruck or get into the defensive line. Comparisons were made to George Smith, the great Australian open side who played with a similar control and purpose. Lewis and Jack proved difficult for the opposition to handle. It says a lot about the technique of the boys that they were stopped, with Robert, Fin and Archie amongst the boys to perform well here, but when they were stopped they had the presence of mind to stop and recycle and allow the 2nd, 3rd or 4th wave of attack to make ground. Young Alfie read this pattern well and crashed over for a deserved try. He was reminiscent of Kyle Sinkler and his charged towards the line and the look on his face and the celebration afterwards said it all.  Frank, Ryan, Eric and Marley performed with distinction throughout and showed all the sides of their developing game.
Overall it was a great morning and many thanks to all that made it happen. The beautiful weather and picturesque surroundings were surpassed on this occasion by the fabulous games on display.
