  • Hockey - Year eight girls v Staff

Thu 05 Dec 2019 Mrs Allen
This was a new event which turned out to be thoroughly enjoyable.
The year eight girls regularly attend club on a Wednesday. Many members of staff turned up despite their very busy schedules.
There were a few ex pupils who also showed up. Grace White daughter of Mrs. White in the maths department and Alex Scott who is currently in year nine.
Mr. McKinley was padded up and was a great asset in goal for the year eight team. The match got off to an early start and Mr.Drew was dominant playing in centre midfield. There were some strong attempts at goal by Mr.Mcgrath and Mr.May .
It was comforting to have the experience of Mrs.White and strong defence from the year five and six team.
Only one goal passed the keeper and the score was 1-0.
The year eight girls battled well- Chloe and Winnie in defence and Natasha and Jemima attacking . Grace White transferred to the year eight team and the play switched.
    Well done to all players.

  • Matthew swims to success.

Tue 03 Dec 2019 Mrs Bury
Matthew, 7AMW, had a very successful weekend competing in the Academy Team Swimming Championships; he came 3rd in the '13 and under' boys' championship - the first and second places were both won by 13 years old swimmers, so he did exceptionally well.
  • Saxons do the Double

Mon 02 Dec 2019 Mr McGrath
Many congratulations to the Saxons from year 6 who secured 1st place in both the tag and tackling rugby competition. It was a beautiful morning and this helped set the scene for some thrilling and highly skilled rugby.
Some of the rugby was truly wonderful and it is always pleasing to see phases being put together and this was made possible by some excellent defending by all of the teams. Dylan was an absolute rock in defence for the Normans, putting in tackle after tackle. All were executed well and he picked the appropriate time to compete for the ball. Josh from the Normans was another player who gave absolutely everything and set a great example for his team mates. His tackle on Ronnie could be heard in the music block. Reuben and Rory of the Celts also came away with a lot of credit. They constantly rucked, tackled and carried ball against tough opponents. On another day or in a different year group the Celts could have been the winners such was the quality they had. However it was not to be but I was incredibly proud of the way they conducted themselves throughout. It says a lot about the collective spirit of that team that they never gave up and kept playing hard and fair.
Saxons emerged as the overall winners, winning all their games. Although it must be said they were made to work hard for every try. Ronnie scored a number of good individual tries for the Saxon's but they were by no means a one player team. The 3 Harrys or triple H as they were affectionately refired to were quite brilliant. Tackling well, carrying strongly and looking to pass the ball into space. Noah provided a second playmaking option to Suik and allowed the ball to move freely. The late arrival of Alfie also added another dimension to an already impressive team.

All of the players should be immensely proud of their effort and performance. Thanks also to the sports leaders who were absolutely first class and all of the teachers and support staff.
  • Year Six house Hockey

Mon 02 Dec 2019 Mrs Allen

    Thursday 28th November

A beautiful Autumnal day greeted the year six girls in their annual house hockey competition. There is a large cohort of girls in this year group and I felt truly inspired to see so many girls playing good quality hockey. Thank you to Miss Crossland for umpiring and for her support with coaching this year.
The teams divided into two squads per house . All points are collated so every match counted. Saxons got off to a good start as did the Normans scoring four goals in their first match.
Celts and Vikings lost their first matches but it was encouraging to see them fight back and Vikings started to catch up in their later matches.
At the end it was very close.
    4th - Celts
    3rd - Vikings
In 2nd ( but purely on goal difference ) Saxons
    Cup winners 2019 Normans
Well done to all players for a great term's work in Hockey.

  • Monarchs Gymnastics raise funds for Tilly.

Mon 02 Dec 2019 Mrs Garrod

Kind-hearted young gymnasts from Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are raising funds to help one of their team mates who suffers from Spina Bifida and faces a major operation in the New Year.

Tilly (5JC) is a member of Monarchs Gymnastics and a specialist team of surgeons will be operating on her spine in January.

“Tilly is an amazing little girl and has overcome many obstacles along the way to be able to achieve great things at the club,” said Mandy Warburton from the Monarchs.

The club supported the charity Shine for Spina Bifida’s awareness week, by wearing something yellow all week and have raised almost £200.

  • Year Seven Mendip Hockey tournament

Mon 02 Dec 2019 Mrs Allen

    November 28th Well Blue

The girls were very excited about this competition after working hard at training every Wednesday.
The first match was against a strong team from Wells. They conceded an early goal against them early in the game but didn't let their heads go down. A strong defence from Avril and Poppy meant that the final score was 1-0 to Wells.
A slightly different squad faced Oakfield from Frome in the second match. Again there was an early goal from the opposition but Annie dribbled through to make a great pass to Amelie who scored a goal in the last moment of the game
    Final score 1-1
After a rest the girls faced Fairlands. A few good saves from Goalkeeper , Maddie but the final score in the end was 2-0 to Fairlands.
The final two matches were close. Selwood and Hugh Sexey played a great game and no goals were scored. Jez and Sophia , with Beatrice in midfield showed great determination and it was a shame no goals were scored. Anna displayed great fitness and Malikia was inspiring as captain. Izzy made some strong free passes but sadly the team didn't score.
    Final score 0-0
Our last match was against Crispin and the girls were determined to win.   They scored at the beginning of the match and this meant the final score in their last match was 1-0 to Hugh Sexey.
Overall, we came in at 4th place. The girls enjoyed their first tournament and all seemed to have learnt a great deal from their experience. Well done.
The photograph is missing Beatrice arrived at a different time.
