  • Year 8 Girls' Hockey Tournament.

Mon 29 Nov 2021 Zara Bird

On Thursday 25th November, Year 8 girls travelled to Whitstone Leisure Centre to compete against Oakfield School, St Dunstan School and Whitstone School in a Hockey competition.

The team played three matches. Hugh Sexey first match was against Oakfield. It was a good match with a first lucky goal by Zara which crept over the line. Some good ball control by Freya and Gracie scored two goals. Player of the match was awarded to Zara. The final score was 3-0 to Hugh Sexey.

Hugh Sexey second match was against St Dunstan School. The girls all played enthusiastically and started to really gel as a team. Another goal scored by Gracie and patient waiting from the Captain, Martha, pushed a goal to the back of the net. A third goal was scored by Gracie. The final score was 3-0 to Hugh Sexey. Player of the match was awarded to Daisy.

Hugh Sexey final match was played against Whitstone School. The team played well. Olivia was finding her confidence and Isla getting out of goal. The other team was strong but Gracie managed to push in one goal. Final score was 1-0 to Hugh Sexey. Olivia was awarded Player of the match.

Hugh Sexey were the overall winners of the competition.

Well done to everyone that played.

  • Feast of Football.

Thu 25 Nov 2021 Mr McGrath

Well done to the 3 football teams who travelled to Millfield Prep School. A trip to Millfield is always a stern test of sporting ability and many of the players were doing it for the first time.

The girls were involved in a testing Under 12s Somerset Cup Match. The Millfield team were well drilled, skilful and physical. Right from the first whistle they forced us onto the back foot and that was how it remained for large periods of the match. The girls did regroup and manage to make some purposeful attacks. Poppy and Grace really applied themselves and Eleanor ran the channels tirelessly looking for the ball. Talia can also be proud of how she conducted herself as Captain. She never gave up and kept encouraging and looking for the ball. It is a credit to Millfield that they did their bit to make a contest of the game and in the closing minutes it seemed like every spectator was willing Hugh Sexey to score a deserved goal. Sadly, despite repeated forays into the opposition half it wasn't to be. The girls should be very proud of their efforts and the way they conducted themselves. For many it was their Hugh Sexey debut and it was evident that there were some pre match nerves. Hopefully this fixture serves as an extra impetus for more of the pupils to attend the scheduled football practices.

The two under 11s boys teams put in impressive performances on the pitches at Edgerly Manor. Coaches Mr Kemsley and Mr Banwell were immensely proud of how the boys played and it was great to see how much they enjoyed the games. The team captained by Xavier lost 4-3. The game was of a very high standard with both teams showing real variety in their play. Zak chipped in with a trademark goal running off the shoulder of the last defender and beating the keeper with a precise shot. The two Noahs also scored goals after good approach play from the midfield. The boys were very disappointed at the final whistle. Losing can often be hard to take but it is important we remember what Mr Kemsley said afterwards. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from losing a close game against high quality opposition.

The team captained by Flinn put in a very powerful performance on the opposite pitch. Flinn was an inspiring captain. He showed constant energy and worked really hard to keep all of the players motivated. He also grabbed two goals in the win after ghosting into the box. Henry was also amongst the goal scorers and Frankie was a creative force in midfield.

I hope all the players are really proud of their efforts and continue to work hard on developing their game.

  • Boys' Hockey: HSMS vs Fairlands.

Wed 24 Nov 2021 Mrs Allen

The boys have been enjoying hockey in their games lessons and this was a great opportunity for them to experience a match on the Astro turf at Kings versus Fairlands .

    A team

Captained by Michael the team looked very skilful in their team work and individually. They didn’t let Fairlands score despite a good battle by the opposition.

Daniel scored a successful second goal against a very experienced keeper.

Final score 2-0 to Hugh Sexey

    B team

It was fantastic to see this team pull together and for most it was their debut representing their school. Oscar played well on the wing and Jude was very tenacious in the centre field.

Fairlands played well and the final score was 4– 1 to Fairlands .

It was great to be able to play a boys’ fixture many thanks to Mrs Walker at Kings for organising such a pleasurable event .

  • Finally, a Fixture! Girls' Hockey- HSMS vs Fairlands

Thu 18 Nov 2021 Mrs Allen

Hockey Fixture versus Fairlands Middle School @Kings Leisure Centre.

    November 16th Years 6,7 and 8 girls .

The girls enjoyed their first match for over two years . They travelled to Kings of Wessex Astro and matches were umpired by leaders from Kings of Wessex.

    Year 6 Mrs.Callow / Miss Parfitt

A very exciting match . Libby was captain and had organised her team most effectively. There were some exciting moments of play with every player giving their best. The final score was 2-1 to Hugh Sexey.

    Year 7 Mrs Allen

I watched this match with baited breath. It was very even, with the play flowing from one end of the pitch to the other. Captain Tilly, was encouraging and showed her expertise with her stick . Honey played well in her debut as GK

At the very last minute Fairlands scored a goal, making the final score 1-0 to Fairlands.

    Year 8 Mrs Allen

The older girls played a longer match. The team have worked very hard together in training and despite missing one of the players due to injury , they fought well against strong opposition. Isla showed great potential as GK and Orla was voted player of the match by Fairlands. Daisy was strong in defence and Freya tenacious in midfield.

The final score was 5-1 to Fairlands.

Thank you to Mrs. C Walker for organising the matches . It was a great experience for the girls to compete under floodlights on such an immaculate pitch.

Well done to all coaches and pupils. .

  • Hugh Sexey Remembers

    Fri 12 Nov 2021 R. Adair

On Thursday the 11th of November, the entire Hugh Sexey family paused to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives in war for our freedom and security.  Due to current COVID guidelines, we were unable to gather together outside for our traditional Service of Remembrance, so instead we all engaged in a pre-recorded assembly and service in our tutor rooms and work spaces.  If you wish to watch our service, you can find it here Service of Remembrance 2021.  This year we have also joined the national conversation facilitated by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission, who have asked what remembrance means to us.  We have made a collage of wreaths to demonstrate what we think #Remembrance is....

If you would like to be part of the national conversation and see what remembrance means to others, or to join in yourself, please visit CWGC Join in the conversation and leave your message.

  • Cross Country at Collett Park

Thu 11 Nov 2021 Mr Jackson

    Years 5&6 cross country - Race 2

Our team of enthusiastic cross country runners took part in the second race of the Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League.  It was an undulating 2 kilometre course at Collett Park in Shepton Mallet in pleasant but near dusk conditions.

As for the first race last month, our top three runners were Poppy S, Libby and Bethany in the Girls race and Noah, Euan and Josh in the Boys race.

Eric ran well in his debut for the team.  There were also strong improvements from the first race for Bella, Adam and Henry.

We now have a break until February before race 3 of 5.  If you are a parent or carer of a budding runner from Year 5 or 6 who isn't currently taking part and would like to, please encourage your child to come along to cross country club on Fridays during lunchtime.

  • MATHEMATIC MAYHEM!

Thu 04 Nov 2021 Mrs Lacey

We are SO proud of our Hugh Sexey maths team who attended the primary mathematics festival at Wells Cathedral School on the 3rd of November.

They had to undergo a range of mathematical challenges and they created a poster in record time all about symmetry.

They cooperated beautifully as a team and earned themselves 2nd place out of 11 other schools. How amazing is that?

A huge well done to Khushi (6EC), Ethan (6NR), Henry (6ILH) and Grace (6JC). Also, a big thank you to Mrs. White and Mr. Jarrett who helped prepare and support the group for the event.

Take a look at their hard work below:
