  • HSMS Swimming Galas

Tue 28 Jun 2022 Mrs Allen

    Swimming Gala

    Key Stage three

Our galas started on Monday 20th June with our KS3 gala

This was an opportunity for our older pupils to swim and was well attended by the children .

There were some strong performances from Oscar A , Ferris , Olivia M who all work hard at swimming training and in tri events . I was also pleased by those who joined in for the "fun" aspects .

    Year 5 Gala

This was a very enjoyable event for our year five pupils , their first such event at school . Each house was well represented and our year eight sports leaders did a fantastic job running the event.

Some amazing swimmers, who clearly work hard at club level, demonstrated their fine techniques .

It was also very encouraging to witness our beginners speeding up the pool with their floats; very brave.

It was incredibly close and the final score after the push and glide event was a draw.

After a final swim, the winners were the Vikings.

    Year 6 Gala

This was another very enjoyable event .

Many of the year six pupils attend swimming clubs and it was wonderful to watch their brilliant techniques.

It was great to see four of our club swimmers break a long standing record in the medley relay; their photo can be seen below.

Well done to our beginners who also scored vital points for their houses.

The result came down to the push and glide

    Final winners Saxons

Well done and many thanks to everyone who made all the galas such enjoyable and rewarding events . This includes our wonderful site staff who have worked tirelessly to prepare the pool .

Mon 20 Jun 2022 Mrs Le Hunte

Charlie, 6 ILH , was recently awarded his yellow belt in karate.  He worked extra hard for this karate exam and really showed some character with the effort he put in.  Well done Charlie!

  • Year 7 Introduction to Sports Leaders

Mon 20 Jun 2022 Mrs Allen

    Wednesday June 15th

Year eight leaders gave a very encouraging talk and power point presentation to the future year seven leaders tonight. Thank you to Daniel and Grace for their extra efforts . The power point highlighted key moments from year and what exactly is involved.

There were 37-year sevens who showed an interest.

The presentation was followed by a fun rounder and cricket match between the two-year groups played in good spirits.

All in all, a very encouraging event which bodes well for our future generations of sports enthusiasts .

  • Brilliant Bakes!

Thu 16 Jun 2022 Mr Brown

This year for the bake off, Year 8 students have worked to a very high standard, making cakes that showcase a stunning level of technical skills, deliciously combined flavours, fantastic imagination, ambition and creativity. It has been a pleasure to see them enjoying the subject and putting so much pride and effort into their work.

  • Vikings at Carymoor.

    Wed 15 Jun 2022 Merryn, 5AP

Last week, the year fives went on a school trip to a place called Carymoor. Carymoor is a place where lots of things have been recycled and reused.

First, we hopped on a coach to get there, which was just under an hour away. When we arrived, we met a man called Gary. Gary explained that we would be doing lots of fun activities today but before we start, we are going to look at a PowerPoint. The PowerPoint was good and everyone enjoyed it.

The first activity that we did was make some wood cookies. We got a piece of wood, shaped in a circle, and then wrote our initials on it in Viking letters. We were allowed to decorate it too. We then attached a long piece of string so we could hang it up.

The next activity was creating some flour. We put some grains on a slightly curved rock and bashed, rubbed and squashed them, which made flour. Then there was another way which was two rocks together (very circular) with a small sip in the top rock so we could put a small, thick stick in the hole to spin it, which also made flour.

After that, we split half the class in one group and the other half would be the other group. One group made bread whilst the other group did orienteering. The first group got a stick and a ball of dough, You had to roll the dough out into a long sausage shape then wrap it around the stick with tin foil on the top. Then, you put it over the fire and let it cook.

The orienteering group got a map, a question sheet and an answer sheet to record your answers. We went off in groups of four and used the map to find the questions you had to answer. Once both groups finished, they swapped around. Then it was lunchtime!

After lunch, Gary said that we were going to do a treasure hunt. How it works is, in an area there are lots of Viking letters hidden in bushes, soil or a pack of flowers. We got a piece of paper with the Viking letters on to help us to work out the letter that we found. Then once you found all the letters, we had to make a word. The word that was right was gold coins, and even better we actually got to eat one. Yum!

The final activity that we did on our trip to Carymoor, was almost like we were being detectives. Gary put out lots of green mats with different types of animal footprints. Our job was to go around and find them, then record what animal we thought each footprint belonged to. Luckily, Gary wasn't that harsh because he gave us a booklet with clues in about the appearance of that animal's print.

I hope you enjoyed finding out about how our trip at Carymoor was.

    Thank you for reading.

  • Tanks, and Life in the Trenches.

Tue 14 Jun 2022 Mr Mallett

On a very sunny 13th of June, a group of keen Year 8 historians travelled down to Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset to explore their current topic of World War One in a practical way. Students had the opportunity to participate in two different learning experiences offered by the museum. ‘Tommy in The Trenches’ gave students a hands-on look into the experience of a ‘Tommy’ in the First World War. As part of this experience, students journeyed from the recruitment office to arriving at the platform in France before making their way through the Communication and Reserve trenches and ending up in the Front-Line trench, peering out across No-Man’s Land. Students were able to get up close and personal with the kit of a British ‘Tommy’ - a Lee Enfield rifle and Brodie helmet- before learning what to do when faced with Gas! Gas! Gas! Students then crossed over to the German lines and compared and contrasted the difference in trench design between the opposing forces.

The second experience ‘A Day in the Life of a British Tank Crew’ enabled students to climb aboard a Mark IV tank (without banging their heads on the entrance hatch) and discover what it would have been like to be a member of a British tank crew during the Great War… It would have been dark, noisy, smelly and crowded as far as I can gather. Students then had the opportunity to explore other World War One tanks and see how tank design and technology developed over the course of the war. After a picnic lunch in glorious sunshine, the Education Officer for the museum enlightened students by talking about the career opportunities- and the pathways leading to them- within the world of museums and historical conservation.

To round off the day students then had some self-guided time to browse the other exhibits of the museum and learn how tanks have changed over time from the early beginnings of World War One to the present day. The day was capped off by a swift stop at the gift shop to purchase mementos of the trip before re-joining the bus and venturing home.

Both Mr Mallett and Mrs Adair would like to commend all students for their respectful behaviour whilst in the museum. They acted as great ambassadors for our school.

  • Year7 Rounders vs Wells Blue

Mon 13 Jun 2022 Mrs Allen

Year seven girls played Wells Blue at home on Thursday 9th June

A very close battle with some outstanding performances . Wells proved to be strong opponents and had one or two players who really struck the ball well. Despite their nerves, our players fielded well. This meant the score was close after the first innings.

Tilly and Honey batted well and scored secure rounders . Our true weapon was fielding though and in the second innings the girls managed to get all Wells Blue players out. Chloe bowled superbly not giving away any important half rounders .

After careful calculations, the final score was 11.5 to Wells Blue and 11.5 to Hugh Sexeys.

    Player of the match Chloe

Team players : Chloe, Honey, Iris, Leila, Tilly C , Alice P, Sayba, Gracie S and Evie C

    Well done all.

  • Rounders - HSMS vs Wells Blue

Wed 08 Jun 2022 Mrs Allen

The year eight girls travelled to Wells Blue for their  first rounders match of the term .

It was a lovely sunny day and spirits were high .

The girls had two innings and for the first time appreciated how competitive this sport can be.

Cyanne displayed her quick fielding skills as bowler and fielder . Ruby J was outstanding at second post . The whole team gave 100% but, on this occasion, Hugh Sexey lost 9.5 to 8.5 rounders .

Player of the match was Grace J
