  • Indoor Athletics Champions

Thu 30 Jan 2020 Mr McGrath
The Hugh Sexey PE department would like to say a huge well done to Jack and Evie who represented Somerset in the indoor athletics. Both students were put forward for trials by the school on the back of strong showings in the SASP games and also due to their performances in PE lessons. They attended training sessions and both were picked for the full Somerset squad. Jack won gold in both of his events and was part of a victorious boys team. Evie also performed with distinction, getting 1st and 2nd place and being part of a girls team that finished 2nd. We are so proud of these students and it is a credit to them that they took the plunge and attempted something new and relatively unknown. I am sure the experience of this event and skills learned will serve them well in future events.
  • Mendip Junior Cross Country League - Race 3

Thu 30 Jan 2020 Mr Jackson

Our runners had to contend with a lot of mud and a hilly course at Millfield Senior School in Street for the first race back after the mid-winter break.

Grace, Ruby, Fynn and Jamie continue to excel and Jamie achieved his first top 10 finish of the season.

Well done to Frank for a great performance in his first race and also to the other Year 5 boys (Fergus, George, Jamie and Jules) who all improved on their placings from the previous two races.

With two races remaining, the boys look set to be one of the top three teams at the end of the season and the girls team are currently in fourth.  Both are very creditable positions with over 20 schools taking part in this league.

Mr Jackson is keen to hear from any Year 5 or 6 girls who have performed well in bleep tests and cross country runs in recent PE lessons and would like to represent Hugh Sexey in the two remaining races in March.  The boys team has already reached it's limit of 10 runners.

  • Run New Zealand

Wed 29 Jan 2020 Mrs Harris
    Before the hail arrived!
During PSHE lessons this week, as part of our Mental Health Challenge Day, year 8 pupils were set the task of running 60km per tutor group. 8RH began the challenge on Tuesday, and completed 433 laps of the muga, before adverse weather put an end to the  journey! The distance represents how far Lewis Matthews, who came in to school to talk to the year group before Christmas, is currently running every day, for eight weeks, in his attempt to run the length of New Zealand. Any money raised by us will be put towards Lewis’ chosen cause, Somewhere House, Somerset. • Year 5 visit to 'We the Curious'

Wed 29 Jan 2020 Frank and Erin in 5OM
    By Frank and Erin, 5OM

On Wednesday 22nd January, Year 5 went to 'We the Curious' in Bristol. It was really fun!
First, we did a workshop about the solar system, we learnt about all the planets and how the moon appears to change shape. (the phases)
After that, we had lunch. Then we went upstairs to look at and play with the exhibits, next downstairs to see some more amazing things.
Then we went to the 3D planetarium and went on a holiday in space, where we were allowed to choose our destinations. Our group chose to visit: Lava Domes, Yin Yang Terrain, Uranian Aurora, Halley's Comet and Meteor Showers.
Then, finally, we had some more free time to explore upstairs. I felt sad when we had to leave, but I remembered what a fun time we had.

A quote from the day "I loved the parachutes, but I couldn't choose my favourite, because I loved every minute of it!"
  • Year 4 Multiskills Festival at HSMS

Mon 27 Jan 2020 Mr Waterfield

The Year 4's from our local feeder schools came to Hugh Sexey's today for their annual Multi Skills Festival.

The festival consists of doing different skills such as football, rugby, hockey, tennis, etc.

The Year 4 children loved it and had a really good time; I was very impressed by how they all got on with the activities and just kept going - they had great fun!  The success of the afternoon was all down to our excellent Year 8 Sports Leaders, who were fabulous.  They led the warm- ups, ran the festival and delivered/coached all the sports.  More importantly they were great with the younger children and gave them lots of encouragement.

Well done everyone, it was a superb afternoon of sport

    Mr Waterfield

  • Year 8 Mechanical Vending Machine Project

Wed 22 Jan 2020 Miss Latti

Pupils in Year 8 have been working on a  real ‘problem solving’ example of a design and make model by creating a small-scale mechanical vending machine. During theory lessons pupils have learnt how mechanical systems are used in products to enable movement and force. Pupils have applied their theory knowledge by using the ‘iterative design process’ to create a model prototype of their mechanical vending machine design prior to making the final product including any modifications along the way. This is a skill pupils will require in KS4 DT. Pupils have produced some fantastic products which demonstrate excellent engineering and creativity.
  • Year 8 Bake-Off Project

Fri 17 Jan 2020 Miss Latti

Pupils in Year 8 have been working on the Bake-Off Project where they have been learning to develop their technical cooking skills in food preparation linked to baking. Pupils have learnt about the scientific principles behind how ingredients work when they are combined and their functional properties. Pupils applied the core principles of baking science to the preparation of a variety of food products within set time constraints. During the Bake-Off pupils were assessed on their hygiene and safety, organisation, preparation of ingredients, cooking and presentation skills. Pupils have produced some fantastic baked food products showcasing excellent creativity and a high level of technical skill.
  • Year 6 Synagogue Visit.

Fri 17 Jan 2020 Mrs Adair
Today forty Year 6 pupils travelled to Bristol to visit the Bristol and West Progressive Jewish Synagogue as part of their RE studies on Judaism.  Our host, Iris, was very friendly and informative and helped the children to further understand what it is like to live as a part of a Jewish family in England and how and why the synagogue is important to her faith community.  The pupils were able to observe the Torah scroll and see the English translations of Hebrew in the prayer books.  The pupils asked amazing questions and showed great knowledge from their lessons.  At the end of the visit, the pupils sang a song about Shabbat Shalom and were treated with a taste of plaited Challah bread.
  • Exam success.

Fri 17 Jan 2020 Mrs Harrison
Congratulations to Bea and Charlie on passing their grade 1 and 2  Piano exams.
  • Evie gets gold.

Thu 16 Jan 2020 Mr McGrath
Well done to Evie who has made the Somerset indoor athletics team. Evie has always been an able and enthusiastic athlete and after a strong showing in the schools games it was suggested she attended an open training. Evie went and has since picked up golds in 1 lap and 2 lap events. We are thrilled at the progress and enthusiasm she is showing and wish her well in the forthcoming County events.
