Player of the Tournament: Kat Millard 8EF

    Captain: Amy Anderson 8EF

On Wednesday afternoon, the year 8 girls went to Frome to play in a tournament with Oakfield and Selwood. It was a cold day, but that didn’t stop us! In the first match, we started off a little shaky, maybe from the long bus journey, but suddenly woke up during the match, going on to win 8-4. From there, we were at our best, taking the second match 11-1 against Selwood. However, Oakfield were back, and they were determined to beat us. Fighting hard in the third and final game, both teams were playing the best they could, but Sexeys came out on top, winning 8-4 again. Winning the entire tournament, the team lived up to the Hugh Sexey sporting reputation and we came home smiling. Throughout the tournament the captaincy of Amy Anderson spurred the team on, leading us to victory. Kat Millard played particularly well, earning her the title of Player of the Tournament.

    Event/Activity:  Understanding Slavery Workshop

Year 8 Understanding Slavery workshops began today (Monday 8 February) when the Education Officer from the American Museum in Bath visited us to help us to learn about the lives of Enslaved Peoples as part of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.  Pupils focused their learning on 5 themes: life before the transatlantic Slave trade, trade and commerce, plantation life, resistance, and abolition and freedom. Pupils were able to handle and investigate artifacts and learned to hypothesis and interpret      the function or purpose of that artifacts. Pupils then had a go at writing a museum label for one of the artefacts.

  • Year 7 Inter House Football

    Fri 26 Feb 2016 Mr R McGrath

As anticipated the year 7 House football competition was a hotly contested affair. The standard of football on display was top quality throughout, and the year 8 refereeing duo of Brandon James and Kai Knight helped ensure positive flowing football. Louis Bougourd was in scintillating form for the Celts. He covered every blade of grass and passed the ball with ease and purpose. Jacob Nelson also enjoyed a fine afternoon, scoring regularly and linking play up well. James Giddens scored a beautiful goal from distance in the final game to cap of a good afternoon for him.
The Saxons played well throughout;  Alex Richard, Wilf Harris, Matt Nicoladies and Ethan Woolacott all played well but in the end the Saxons finished with 4 points.
The Vikings pushed a number of sides close and did the double on the Saxons. Charlie Marsh and Jacob Westbrook performed well and Morgan Roberts was his usual dependable self in goal.
The Normans did exceptional well, especially considering the small number of players they had at their disposal. Stephen Wilson was relentless in attack, and is continuing to develop as a football player. Alex Barnett worked tirelessly and defended well and Seb Martin did a fine job of bringing all of the players together and helping them function as a team.

  • Year 8 Production - The Lion King

    Fri 26 Feb 2016 Miss S Kendall

Hakuna Matata! Just before half term, the quiet village of Blackford, accustomed to sheep, cows and horses, was transformed into the African savannah, alive with lions, gazelles, hyenas and giraffes, during Hugh Sexey Middle School's performance of Disney's 'Lion King'. Around eighty pupils were involved in the year 8 production, with pupils and staff working hard since September to get everything ready. While the cast was busy learning lines, songs and dance routines, the props club gave up lunchtimes to make everything from jungle plants to elephant bones, while others from the digital leaders' club put together a short 'green-screen' video, and a committee organised much-needed fundraising events. In the final week, the backstage crew was formed, taking responsibility for lighting, sound, and the smooth running of the show, with fantastic help from two students from Weston College who led a team of pupils doing face-painting. The show was enjoyed by parents and pupils alike, as well as the first schools children who were invited to see the dress rehearsal. While staff have a much-needed rest, pupils from year 7 are already thinking of ideas for next year!

  • Yr 8 Boys' Football Team - match reports

    Thu 25 Feb 2016 Jack Gillett, 8DJ
    Match reports

Selwood: Selwood 3-0 Hugh Sexeys.   The game didn't start too well for Sexeys. Selwood were very close to getting an early goal with a nice chip from there striker. Their 2 travelling fans began to celebrate as the ball trickled towards the line but Fred Rice had other ideas. He raced for the ball and got behind it to clear the rolling ball. Selwood still got off the mark fairly quickly with a goal slotted nicely into the bottom corner. They soon got a second from a corner. The ball drifted into the box and Selwood were given to much time by the Sexeys defence. Unmarked, the goalscorer striked it into the top corner. Sloppy defending at fault then. Now in the middle of open play there wandering right back struck a shot from distance which ricocheted of the post. The third goal after half time and was from the edge of the box and put nicely to the left of the keeper. Sexeys heads didn't drop but the game carried on quietly and the game ended with a loss for Sexeys.

Oakfield: Oakfield 0-3 Hugh Sexeys.   Oakfield were a different team to play against. They were a large and physical team. The score was level until not long before half time. A corner was taken by Freddy Axton and a few scuffling shots later, Jake King struck it sweetly into the top left to break the deadlock. The crowd were stunned. Jake boosted the confidence of our comparatively small team and Richard Hillgrove got themselves another goal by hitting it across goal. Oakfield seemed to think the game was over and began messing around and being quite unpleasant to Hugh Sexeys. Sexeys however keeping their cool carried on and set Freddy Axton up for another goal. At least that's what they thought! The goal was disallowed due to Oakfields unprofessional goalkeeper who claimed the ball didn't cross the line and in actual fact hit the side netting. Outrageous... The opposition team continued to get on Sexey's nerves but there was no time left. The whistle blew and Sexeys had deservedly won.

  • Year 5 House Netball Matches

    Thu 25 Feb 2016 Mrs K Allen
The house matches for netball were played on Monday 22nd February.
The sun was shining and the girls turned up in their house colours ready to play for the prestigious year five house netball cup.
There was two squads in each house an A and a B . The girls that weren't playing were energetic cheerleaders and I noticed the Normans were particularly loud and supportive.
The girls all played well. I was impressed with their knowledge of positions and their overall understanding. There wasn't a high number of goals so that's an area to work on  - our shooting skills!
The Saxons all played well with our superb umpire Mrs. Callow. Both squads won many of their matches which led to overall victory.
Netball club will continue in Thursday lunch time.
Well played . A superb afternoon of sport.

A well contested competition with the Vikings, Saxons, Normans and Celts all playing well and with excellent spirit throughout. All of the boys have made great strides as players and this was best summed up by strong performances from Ben Bird (Saxons) and James Hart (Vikings). Lewis Duggan also had a day to remember for the Celts, scoring a number of important goals. Thomas Bean and Jacob Aberdeen also impressed for the Celts as they staged a spirited fight back in the final games. The Normans performed well and pushed every team they played. Charlie Rant and Oliver Richards leading by example throughout.
In the end the Saxon's emerged the victors, as both teams went unbeaten all afternoon. The whole squad impressed with Sam Callow and Luc Griffiths preforming well.
Many thanks to Mr Lamb, Mr Bullock, Mr Waterfield and Mr Perkins for their support.
