  • First Schools' Netball Tournament @ HSMS

Thu 31 Mar 2022 Mrs Allen

It was brilliant to welcome the first schools to Hugh Sexey for the netball festival. It was very well attended by pupils, parents, carers and staff.
Lympsham, Mark, Weare , Wedmore , East Brent and Hugh Sexey year fives all played in a friendly , but competitive tournament.
I was impressed with the standard of play from all the pupils. It was nice for them to experience playing on a full size court and against other schools. It bodes well.
It was a Round Robin competition which means every school plays every school. Hugh Sexey enjoyed this experience but as they are a year older , were only playing friendlies. I particularly enjoyed witnessing the increase in the number of boys who represented their schools.
Some  of our year eight sports leaders helped to run the event. All these pupils have a particular interest in netball. Netball is quite a tricky sport to officiate and it was good to see that their understanding and enforcement of the rules has developed. Thank you to Hebe, Ella, Olivia, Orla and Alexa for umpiring so efficiently. Also thanks to Zara, Lucie, Dillon and Noah for the coaching and leading the warm up session.
Wedmore School came first overall , with Weare a very close second.
A very encouraging and happy event.

  • All about water.

Thu 31 Mar 2022 Miss Ralph

Last week, Year 6 had a fantastic time at Ashford Water Centre. We learnt a lot about how the water was cleaned so we can drink it. As well as this, we discovered the river flow (by playing a very competitive game of pooh sticks!). We also completed a river profile; putting our classroom knowledge to the test. It was a brilliant day out and we were especially lucky with the weather. All of Year 6 would like to say a big thank you to the teachers and LSAs who came with us and an especially big thank you to Sue and Emma, who were our guides for the day.

Wed 30 Mar 2022 Mr Jackson

Congratulations to George, Jack, Harry and Dillion for a successful season with the Mid Somerset District Football team. The boys have learned a lot from the experience and won three out of three against Yeovil, Cornwall and Taunton. We are very proud of their accomplishments and hope they continue to enjoy developing as sports people.

  • 2-2 Thriller against Gryphon of Dorset

Mon 28 Mar 2022 Mr McGrath

The boys' football team put in a cracking performance against Gryphon school. Gryphon also brought a netball team along and it was great to establish a new link with a School. The fine spring weather contributed to a lovely afternoon played in a great spirit. Gryphon started brightly and had a couple of early chances. Hugh Sexey then started to find a rhythm with captain Sam, Nik and Austin showing promise in the attacking areas of the pitch. A chance nearly came Owens way but he was denied it by Gryphon’s well drilled defence. Oliver put in an excellent performance on the right hand side and was always hungry for the ball. At the end of the first half Hugh Sexey’s defence was finally breached after the Gryphon striker neatly finished inside the box. It was a strong first half performance non the less and it was great to see Jay put in a commanding performance on his School debute.

In the second half Jacob came out of goal and led the attack and made an immediate impact. The shape was changed to a more adventurous 323 with Ollie and Charlie on in the midfield and Will brought on to marshall the defence. After a a fine save by the keeper Jacob was on hand to smash the ball home and make the game 1-1. Cue mass celebrations. This proved to be the catalyst for Hugh Sexey's best passage of play. After playing the ball from the back Nik received the ball turned and realised Austin. His fierce shot was again saved but Jacob followed up again to make it 2-1. Cue pandemonium. The lead seemed to drive Gryphon on and perhaps the pressure effected Hugh Sexey as they stopped playing to their strength. One fabulous Save from Cameron preventing a certain goal. Gryphon kept pushing and eventually got an equaliser. The game then went end to end and in the final moments Gryphon nearly snatched it. A back pass to Cameron was dealt with but when the ball was won by Gryphon he was caught way off his line. A shot from the half way line was sailing towards the top corner but somehow he got back in time to tip it over the bar and secure the draw.

It was a great game played in a great spirit. Well done to all involved.

  • Year 5 & 6 Football vs Millfield

Thu 17 Mar 2022 Mr McGrath

Well done to all of the players involved in the football fixtures against Millfield. Millfield brought 4 teams to us and this allowed all of the players who attend football training to get some much needed game time. The wet and windy weather didn't dampen the mood and Hugh Sexey put in some excellent displays against a strong and well prepared School.

Out of the 4 games Hugh Sexey won 3 and drew 1. More importantly the level of performance was very high with all players showing a desire to have the ball and then showing skill and composure when in possession. The teams should be very proud of how they performed. It is a testament to the hard work they have invested.

Thanks also to Millfield for a great game and Mr Banwell, Mr Kemsley, Mr White and all the sports leaders for helping with the fixtures.

  • Year 5 Eco Club is working really hard!

Wed 16 Mar 2022 Miss Harris

Yesterday we spent our time finishing the draft of our persuasive letter to the garden centres, asking them for some very kind donations. We have used google to find the most local centres and the children are now writing the letters up in best before hand delivering or posting them out.

They are really invested in our project!

  • Year 8 Netball Tournament

Wed 16 Mar 2022 Mrs Allen

Year 8 netball competition March 15th

A sunny day and perfect conditions for netball.

Ten of the year eight girls travelled to Fairlands middle school for the annual netball tournament. The girls have been working really hard alongside a committed squad of thirty.

The other schools present were Fairlands, Selwood, Oakfield and St. Dunstans. All the matches were superbly umpired by sixth form players from Kings. It was great to see some of our former pupils confidently umpiring.

We got off to a positive start against Fairlands . Our girls won their first match 5-2 .

After a rest, the team played St. Dunstans and despite a hesitant start, managed to win this match 4-2 .

The next match was very close and even . This was against Selwood who had a very accurate GS. Our shooters , Olivia and Hannah soon caught up. The final score was 6-5 to Selwood.

The final match was against Oakfield. It was close to start with , but a solid defence and accurate shooting meant we won 4-2.

Well done to our GK Alexa who was voted player of the team twice.

Hebe , was consistent as WA and captain.

Well done to all the team: Alexa, Isla, Heidi, Marnie, Taylor, Grace, Heidi,Libby, Olivia and Hannah.

    Final tournament result

    5th Oakfield

    4th St. Dunstans

    3rd Fairlands

    2nd Hugh Sexey

    1st Selwood.

  • WW1 fuse found in field.

    Tue 15 Mar 2022 Oakley, Year 7

This is the fuse out of the WW1 shell that I found whilst I was out metal detecting in a field in Mark. It is dated 1916 and was shot out of a cannon that took 6 horses to tow. We called the police and they sent out two officers in a van and they had to take me in the van to show them where I dug it up. The sergeant went through the hole and luckily found nothing! When we got back, the police had to send pictures to the army and they deemed it safe and that I could keep it.
