  • HSMS Equestrian Team success at National School Equestrian Association Showjumping Competition

Wed 26 Sep 2018 Sonja Beasley

The school Equestrian team had their first outing of the school year last week, competing in the National School Equestrian Association Grassroots showjumping competition at Kings Sedgmoor Equestrian centre, on a very wet and cold Saturday morning.
First on in the clear round class were Phoebe and Leah Wills and Grace Evans, who all rode excellent rounds.
In the 40 cm class we had the team of Henry McCutcheon, Poppy Scriven, Phoebe Wills, Leah Wills and Grace Evans. The team all jumped brilliantly to take the 1st team spot; a fantastic result! This means that they have qualified for the national championships. Well done team! Poppy also got an individual 1st and Henry an individual 4th place.
Next, in the 50 cm competition, Grace Brazier jumped a superb clear round to come 1st and Poppy got a well deserved 3rd place.
Grace Brazier also competed in the 60 cm class and jumped another lovely clear round to come 4th against some tough competition. Well done Grace.
This was a superb achievement for this team in their first time out and we are all looking forward to lots more success!
  • Cheerleading Medals for Georgina.

Mon 24 Sep 2018 Pam Bury

Georgina, 7RA, recently won 3 medals in a cheerleading competition held on 22 September.  She is part of the Kings squad which trains for this competition every year.  The day started at 11am and ended at 6:30 pm and Georgina's squad performed 3 routines: a pom routine, a stunt routine (very acrobatic) and finally a street dance routine - all watched by an audience of over 1,000 spectators.

There were a lot of teams competing and Kings squad did brilliantly, reaching 5th place on the first routine, 3rd place on the stunt routine and 4th place on their street dance routine.

Very well done Georgina, and good luck with your future competitions.

  • U13 Girls' Nationals Football - Round 1

Mon 24 Sep 2018 Mr Waterfield

On a very cold and wet day the U13 girls kicked off the ESFA Nationals with a home match against Priory School from Weston Super Mare.

The strong wind was always going to be very challenging for both teams but Hugh Sexey's were great, and played smart football - short passing and keeping the ball on the ground.

The first half finished 0-0 with both sides coming close to scoring, but both keepers were on good form.

In the second half Hugh Sexey's rang some changes and introduced 3 fresh players into the game: Radford, Kennedy, and Fuller whom came on and made an instant impact.  Within a few minutes Thurling  found her goal scoring touch and bagged four goals in the half.  A screamer from Pargeter into the top corner of the net gave us a fifth goal. Priory scored a late penalty from the spot after a handball. The final score was 5:1 to HSMS.

Many thanks to Priory for a lovely game of football.  It was a pleasure to referee this game and to see the girls' great attitude on the pitch.

Hugh Sexeys are now through to round 2, and believe we next play Gordano at Home; date to be confirmed.

    Well done all.

    Squad:

    E Pargeter, C Webb, F Stephens, E Woodcock, J Woodcock, P Griffiths, M Pargeter, A Steckler,

    M Durrant, J Thurling, L Slater, E Catley-Day, O Fuller, M Kennedy, and K Radford

  • Year 5 Rugby at Millfield

Mon 24 Sep 2018 Mr McGrath
Well done to the year 5 rugby team who put in an inspired performance in the tag competition at Millfield Prep school. The newly formed side played against the hosts and Kingswood from Bath. From the start Hugh Sexey played a very expansive game with the ball moving wide and with players taking the ball to the line and delivering the ball with accuracy once defenders commit. In truth it is rare to see rugby like this so early and it is a testament tot the coaching a number of the players get at their local clubs. Once you add in enthusiastic players who are new to the game it makes for a very valuable learning experience. Young Harry put in a masterclass in midfield. He often stood at first or second receiver and possessed the unique ability to play the ball flat on the gain line to players moving into the available gaps. Once the defence reacted to this he had the presence of mind to attack the space available. Ronnie and Dylan were two players to benefit from this style of play and they both had a number of rampaging runs down the wings. Lucy and Louis also had good games with both players often in close support of the ball. What pleased me the most was how well they operated as a team. Rather than run as far as they could go and then pass when tagged they showed the ability to catch, draw and pass. This was best displayed when Josh burst through the midfield arched around his opponent and then stepped in to release Ronnie for a clear run to the line. It made for a very entertaining game.
Well done to all the players involved and thanks to Millfield for hosting.

  • Innes dances at Sadlers Wells with the National Youth Ballet

Wed 12 Sep 2018 Mrs Oliver
In the summer holidays Innes (8DJ) completed her second season with the National Youth Ballet, with a Gala performance of ‘Bright Young Things’ at Sadlers Wells in London (see photo -Innes is in the red dress, front row, seated).

We are proud to say that she received an award for Outstanding member of the company, awarded by the artistic director Mikah Smillie and the NYB staff (see photo). Innes joined the company at Elmhurst Ballet School in mid August, to learn this season’s choreography:  ‘The Red Balloon’; she was cast as the‘Red Balloon puppeteer’ one of the principal roles.  Innes worked really hard to learn the piece before the company moved to the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham. Following dress and technical rehearsals, two evening and one matinee performances in Birmingham, she travelled to London  for the final performance.

The hard work started back in March, when Innes attended an audition in Birmingham, with the second round held in London in April. On the same weekend in April, Innes attended auditions at Elmhurst Ballet School, where she was offered a place as an Associate Student. This means she will attended special classes in Birmingham every weekend, as well as her dance classes in Blackford and Bristol.  Innes works very hard at her ballet and has received a fantastic response  from teachers, choreographers and directors alike.

Very well done Innes, we wish you great success with your ballet.
