  • Cross Country at Brymore

Thu 09 Dec 2021 Mr Jackson

Eight cross country runners from Years 7 and 8 took part in the Sedgemoor Area Cross Country Championships at Brymore Academy in Cannington.

If it was a horse race, the going would definitely be described as "heavy" following the recent downpours from Storm Barra.

Despite the conditions, it was a determined effort by our runners who all ran well and all qualified to be invited to represent Sedgemoor at the Somerset Schools Cross Country Championships in January.

Well done Alice, Ben, Grace and Vin from Year 7 and Elijah, Fynn, Oscar and Zach from Year 8.

Particular mention goes to Grace who was misdirected whilst in the lead which put her back into the middle of the pack and then, with her implacable resolve, still fought back to win the Year 7 Girls race.

  • Year 8 Football: the Somerset Cup.

Mon 06 Dec 2021 Mr Kemsley

On Thursday the 2nd of December Hugh Sexeys Year 8 Football Team travelled to Wellsway School in the 2nd round of the Somerset cup.

Hugh Sexey got off to the perfect start with George scoring a great goal after dribbling past 3 defenders and calmly placing the ball into the corner. The team then built on this lead as Finn played a magnificent defence-splitting through ball to George who was brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded.  Declan stepped up to take it and slotted the ball into the back of the net to make the score line 2-0. Wellsway then woke up and forced some top saves from our goalkeeper Josh as well as some last ditch tackles from our defenders Jack, Harry, Charlie and Toby.  Hugh Sexey managed to weather the storm and go into half time at 2-0.

Hugh Sexey started the second half like they did the first when Alfie was played through and his shot trickled just over line to put the team 3-0 up. Wellsway then pulled one back to give them a lifeline in the game.  Our team reacted brilliantly to conceding when George was played through, and scored an outrageous lobbed goal from 25 yards to reclaim Hugh Sexey's 3 goal advantage. Credit to Wellsway their heads never dropped; they kept going and pulled another goal back to make the score line 4-2 but after a well worked corner George tapped the ball in to complete his hat trick to put Hugh Sexey 5-2 up. Wellsway then went all out attack to try and salvage something from the game and managed to score twice in 5 minutes to set up a nervy final couple of minutes for Hugh Sexey but the team managed to see the game out and win a thrilling match 5-4 to progress into the next round of the Cup.

    Well done boys!

  • Book Fair Bonanza.

Thu 02 Dec 2021 Mrs Dourley -librarian

We were all excited at Hugh Sexey Middle School to receive the Book Fair this week.  Four cases arrived with an excellent selection of titles including fiction, non-fiction and journals...some even had Lego attached!  Pupils were able to peruse the Fair during their timetabled library sessions as well as at break and lunchtimes.  The library was a hive of activity throughout the week with pupils choosing books for themselves and also as Christmas presents for younger siblings.  One of the most popular purchases was a Hidden Gems book, where you could learn about geology and even dig for your own gems!  Mrs Dourley, our school librarian, said, "This was one of our most successful Book Fairs yet.  We sold a wonderful £1563.85 of titles which means lots of new and relevant books for the library in the future through the rewards system with Scholastic.  Well done and a huge thank you to all the pupils and parents who supported us this week."

  • Under 13s Rugby vs Fairlands

Thu 02 Dec 2021 Mr McGrath

    Under 13s Rugby vs Fairlands

The boys rugby team played some very adventurous and expansive rugby against a spirited Fairlands side. It’s been a long while since this team has played a full contact match and it was evident emotions were high prior to kick off. Skipper Harry did a great job of keeping the players focused and they started brilliantly. Some of the passing and decision making was simply first class. All of the players were able to access options in front of them and put others into space. With Dillion, Harry, Xavier and Josh spread across the width of the field it seemed we always had an attacking outlet. Those 4 in particular played in a way that really helped bring the best out of everyone and made for an excellent game. The raw power and direct running of Zak, Oliver, Jack, Dylan and Archie as first up carriers meant we were constantly able to get front foot ball. Fairlands tackled everything and anything that came down their channel but eventually they ran out of numbers with Jack getting through a gap. We then pushed again with Withers and Mike showing excellent pace out wide. Lloyd in the centre was a rock in defence and a really assertive and forceful runner. His carries occupied multiple defenders meaning that Suik could manipulate the defence on the 2nd or 3rd phase. This is something he did time and time again. He put on a masterclass of taking the ball straight to the line and then realising others into space. This brought tries for Zak,Archie, Harry and the live wire Evan. Oliver could have scored a great try but instead stopped over the line and passed to the grateful Archie. Noah made a good impression with some sharp decisions and handling and scored a fine solo try.

Fairlands never gave up or stopped tackling and they got a deserved try when their rangy winger gathered a head of speed and proved too fast to catch. Hugh Sexey regrouped and there were trys for Harry and Harry. Tom also got in on the scoring, marking an impressive first game.

The boys should be pleased with how they played and are now preparing for the Oakfield game. Man of the match was a tricky one to call but Withers took it after an impressive display.

  • Mendip Hockey Matches for the Year 7 Girls

Wed 01 Dec 2021 Mrs Allen

    Girls year seven hockey

Ten of our year seven girls travelled to Shepton Mallett Lesisure Centre to play in a Mendip school competition. Three schools were present : Oakfield from Frome, St Dunstans from Glastonbury and HSMS.

Our first match was against Oakfield . The girls , nervous at first, soon warmed up after Iris scored an early goal. There were some good dribbling skills from Grace on the wing and a solid performance from Leila as the sweeper - final score 1-0 to HSMS

The second match saw captain Tilly take up the GK gloves so that Honey could see some action. The team looked more comfortable in this match and Hattie scored the winning goal. Final score 1-0 to HSMS

    Well played all .

Hugh Sexey won overall with St.Dunstans coming second.
