Mendip Junior Cross Country League - penultimate race

Excited by the flurry of snow as we left Hugh Sexey, the realisation came shortly after arriving at Downside School that runners would have to brave near freezing conditions with an added biting wind.

We had 15 brave souls from Years 5 and 6 who did and credit to all for being up for taking part. Finley's amazing efforts continued with another first and so still having won every race so far this season. Katie also achieved a top five. Mentions should also go out to Emilia whose placing improves with every race and very creditable debuts this season for Chloe, Matilda and Dennis.

The team placings for this race were 4th for the girls (out of 20 schools) and 2nd (out of 25 schools) for the boys.

The final race of the season will be on 20th March.

U12s Girls ESFA Nationals

On this freezing cold day we welcomed Mounts Bay Academy to Hugh Sexey's for the round 5 of the National Cup.

Mounts Bay Academy is from Penzance in Cornwall. It was a long journey down the M5 for them '3 Hours drive' their teacher said.

The biggest challenge for both girls teams was to get used to the cold, it was freezing with a strong blustery wind blowing everywhere across the pitch.

In fact, a fantastic warm up led by skipper Phillipa Griffiths played a big part in winning the game, her warm up which she put together the night before was dynamic and aerobic which kept the girls warm.

The first half, especially the first 20 minutes, was close with both teams playing great attacking football. Mounts Bay number 12 was causing problems with her fantastic ability. Millie Pargeter was moved and given the task of man marking her, closing her down and stopping her putting us under any more pressure. Millie was brilliant at doing this - number 12 couldn't cope without the space; well done Millie.

Jemima Thurling - our goal machine- smashed home the first goal, (her 21st goal of the season) after great work from our midfield in setting up the goal.

Half time approached and a good constructive team talk came up with a constructive game plan: to up the tempo and get another early goal, as Mounts Bay now had the wind in their favour. Shortly later Jemima Thurling bagged her 2nd goal of the game; she used her physical presence and timed her shot perfectly, booting the ball into the top corner and giving their keeper no chance: 2-0 to Hugh Sexey's.

Mounts Bay had some chances, but our goal keeper Edie Pargeter saved some great shots from them. This was Edie's best display between the posts all season; she had a cracking game and was full of confidence.

There were more goals from Millie Pargeter- scoring from 18 yards by smashing the ball into the roof of the net, and Katie Radford. Katie kept the pressure on the defence and went round the goal keeper to slot the ball home, making the score 4-0 to Hugh Sexey's. Then a few minutes later Thurling bagged her hat trick, scoring her 23rd goal of the season!

Credit must go to Mariella Kennedy for coming off the bench and immediately making an impact with her strength, especially in her tackles to win the ball.

Our back 3 defenders were Evie Catley-Day, who improves game by game, Freya Stephens and Ella Woodcock, both of whom defended superbly and protected goal keeper Edie.

Midfield consisted of Jessie Woodcock, Philippa Griffiths and Lowenna Jackson-Voyzey who worked their socks off all afternoon, running from box to box and producing some great football.. Strikers Libby Slater and Jemima Thurling proved to be a dream striker partnership; both girls are on fantastic goal scoring form at present. Youngster Cerys Webb proving to be a real talent - Cerys can play in absolutely any position which is every manager's dream.

Player of the match was very difficult to chose, but the players awarded it to Edie for her fantastic goal keeping display; without Edie it's possible we may not have won this game.

A truly a great of football from both teams,and a real pleasure to referee.

School Equestrian Team wins show jumping competition at Millfield to qualify for National Championships

Members of the school equestrian team competed at the NSEA Grassroots showjumping competition at Millfield over the weekend.

Poppy Scriven rode first in the 40cm and 50cm classes and completed two beautiful clear rounds.

The team of Asha Leavey, Nelly Lee and Jonny Lee competed in the 60cm and 70cm classes and all rode brilliantly to take team 1st place in both classes! They also all gained individual places too.

This is an amazing result and means that the Hugh Sexeys team have now qualified for the national schools championships!

U13s Play 7s Rugby at Milfield

7s Rugby (Friday 23rd February)

On this bitterly cold day our Under 13s 7s Rugby squad travelled to Millfield to play their U13s 1st team.

This is a fixture that the PE department has been waiting years to be able to secure; Millfield had a cancelation and invited us over - we accepted very quickly.

We agreed to play 6 games, 5 minutes each way to prepare for the upcoming Rosslyn Park tournament.

Millfield won 4 games and Hugh Sexey's won 2. The most pleasing game for me was the last game which we won 3 tries to nil. By that point the boys had started to work out how 7s is played, and started to control the game with strong running skills looking for the support runners to be able to crash through.

Considering this was our ever first 7s experience, all the boys did fantastically well. Millfield's director of rugby was very complimentary about our boys: he praised their never - die attitude and the fact that they didn't give up.

The Millfield team was very strong;their fitness levels were superb. Our boys enjoyed the experience. Many thanks to Millfield for giving us that once in a lifetime opportunity.

Well done boys. We wish you all the very best of luck for the Rosslyn Park 7s tournament which is being held on Monday 19th March.

Rotary Club Writing Competition 2018

Once again, I am proud to announce that Hugh Sexey have won the local rounds of the Rotary Club Writing competition in the Junior and Intermediate categories. Jessica Edmonstone (Yr8) won the Intermediate round and came runner up in the District round, which is a fantastic achievement, only losing out to the Senior winner from Kings of Wessex, who is in Yr12. Freddie (Yr7) was runner up in the Intermediate category. Chloe Nicolaides (Yr6) was runner up in the Junior category, being piped to the post by Olivia Pearce (Yr6). As always, it has been a pleasure to help judge the story entries for this competition.

Ballet success.

Many congratulations to Innes in 7IA. She recently passed her grade 3 and 4 in ballet with distinction. Innes has practiced ballet since the age of 3 and this is a testament to the hard-work she has invested. We are very happy for Innes and she should be most proud of her achievement.

Rotary Music Competition Winner - Poppy McGhee

Poppy McGhee was the overall winner of this competition this year. She had some good competition from students three years older than her, but she was, not surprisingly perhaps, the clear winner. Her second piece called The Hot Canary really was a show stopper. She really is an exceptional talent.

Poppy therefore goes through to the next round, which includes finalists from Somerset and parts of Dorset and Wiltshire and which will be held in Kings of Wessex School hall on Sunday, 11th March, starting at 2.00 pm. This could be interesting, as she is likely to be competing against the winner from last year who went through to the national final. Two from the round on 11th March go forward to the next round, which covers the whole of the south west.

Poppy received the winner's cup on the evening and a £50 winners voucher.

Somerset Schools Athletics Association (SSAA) Junior Cross Country Championships

A great effort from all our Year 7 and 8 runners who took part in these cross country championships.

Owing to traffic congestion on the way to Taunton, poor Evie had to begin her run before the race to simply make it to the start line on time.

With nearly 300 competitors from across the county, there were impressive top 15 placings for Tom, Chloe and Nathan.

In what will be their final cross country event for the school, I was so pleased to see both Hannah and Henry in the top five again. They have been consistently fantastic every time they have represented Hugh Sexey in cross country.

Local Author visits Year 7

On Tuesday 30 January, year 7 pupils were treated to a visit from local author Michael Malaghan. His new book, called French Tapestry, journeys into the story of the Normal Conquest and the Bayeux Trapestry, and explores the mystery of the 'missing piece'. This fiction book is written from the perspective of two children who travel to Normandy on a school trip and get caught up in an amazing historical adventure. The Year 7 pupils enjoyed the talk and were excited about purchasing a copy of the Michael's book and having it signed.

Staff Netball Match

Staff Netball Tuesday 6th February
Despite the cold conditions the staff appeared from all corners of the school to play netball after school today. The match was a thank you to our student teacher Miss O Brien as she has been helping with key stage three netball.
It was a fast game with promising performances from all the staff. A guest appearance from Mrs. Alison Wilkinson meant that the score was very close. At times , the rule book seemed to be a distant memory and the no contact rule appeared to have been forgotten.
Thank you to all staff for joining in with such great spirit.
