  • Year 8s visit London.

Mon 18 Jul 2022 Mrs Allen

It was brilliant to be able to take our year eights on this exciting trip to the capital. Everyone arrived promptly for a 7am start and we arrived safely at our destination at the premier inn in Blackfriars , London at midday .

The group sat and ate lunch in the shadow of St. Paul's Cathedral .The pupils enjoyed climbing the stairs to the top of the impressive dome , rewarded by spectacular views of London on a clear day.

Convent Garden was buzzing with life and pupils were able to experience this independently- sampling the wide diversity of food and culture on offer.

From here , we walked to the Lyceum theatre to watch the Lion King. The pupils sang along to the well-known songs and enjoyed their 'West End" experience .

After a rather late night , I was impressed with the punctuality at breakfast . The Blue Badge guides met us and took us on a fascinating , historical walk along the Thames arriving at the Tower of London . The tower looked beautiful with the recently planted 'Superbloom' adding to the spectacle. The Tower's historic moat has been planted with wildflowers to benefit wildlife and commemorate the Queen's platinum jubilee.

The pupils ate their lunch on the Thames Link boat whilst listening to superb commentary from the captain ( and some impromptu singing)

Our final experience was the London Eye . It served as a great climax to the trip with the beautifully clear skies allowing a superb view of London’s impressive skyline.

The children were an absolute delight to lead , arriving punctually and behaving with maturity and respect throughout the trip.

Thank you to all staff and to Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Bury for their amazing attention to detail in the organisation of a very rewarding and memorable experience .

  • County Cricket Final

Tue 12 Jul 2022 Mr McGrath

On Thursday the 7th of July Hugh Sexeys Year 5/6 cricket team travelled to Wembdon cricket club to take part in the county cricket final which they qualified for in June after winning 6/6 games. The team were placed in a group of 3 schools and started the day with a game against St Andrews captain Jack B won the toss and chose to bowl first. Ben S and Jack L got the team off to a great start both taking some early wickets. St Andrews kept going and finished with a total of 39 runs. Hugh Sexey who already had a score of 20 after taking 4 wickets comfortably beat this score with Jack B, Freddie S and Emilia P showing their skill with the bat. The team ended with a score of 71 runs to St Andrews 39 to start the day well.

The team then faced Christchurch in a game which they knew if they won, they would have a place in the county final. The team were up to bowl first and again started very strong Noah B, Caleb C and Xavier B both bowling with great pace and precision to take some wickets . Christchurch finished with a good score of 56. The team had to bat well to win and Christchurch took some early wickets which added to their score it was looking like the team were heading for defeat but up stepped two fantastic batting partnerships consisting of Emilia P and Xavier B who hit 26 runs aswell as Noah B and Jack B who also hit 26 to take the team into the county final.

Finally, the team faced Bishop Henderson school in the county final. Captain Jack B again won the toss and the team elected to bowl first. Bishops Henderson's batsman were strong and the team did their best to keep the score to a minimum at the end of the innings Hugh Sexey had a score of 86 to beat. The Team batted very well but couldn't quite overcome a very strong Bishops Henderson team and finished runners up.

A massive well done to all the pupils who took part in both the qualifying rounds and the finals. Hopefully we can go one better next year.

  • Year 5 Sports Day

Fri 08 Jul 2022 Mr McGrath

Well done to the Normans House who finished first place in their first ever sports day. The atmosphere generated by the year 5s was simply magnificent throughout and was equalled by the wonderful athletic performances. There were really strong performances throughout the day and the year 5s were an absolute credit to themselves, their House and the School.

There were new records in the shot put and turbo javelin. It was the first year we have offered this events, so it remains to be seen how long these records will stand. Caleb (Vikings) and Amisha (Saxons) currently hold records in the shot with distances of 4.81m and 3.32m. Beth (Normans) and Jayden (Saxons) hold records in Javelin with distances of 13.6m and 23.1m.

Bethany of Vikings put in a very commanding performance in the girls 1500m running a time of 6.33 that was 11 seconds shy of a school record. She was followed by Georgie of Saxons who ran a brilliant tactical race. She kept to a steady rhythm throughout and was then able to push past 3 runners on the final lap. The boys 1500m race was an absolute classic. Jack, Jon, Eric, Red and Ewan all put everything into the race and the positioning changed regularly. As the race progressed Ewan (Vikings) was able to slip into 1st place and he managed to hold of the brave efforts of Fred (Celts) who finished in 2nd place. The other middle/long distance race was the 800m. These races do require a huge amount of courage and I was thrilled to see that every race had the maximum number of runners. All of those runners got valuable points for their House. Aurelia of  the Vikings won the 800m race with an impressive time of 3.29. She was closely followed by Kitty of Normans with a time of 3.32. In the boys race Louis and Casper of the Saxons finished 1st and 2nd respectively in a brilliant race. Ed of Celts was the 3rd place finisher in a strong field.

Misha got her second 1st place finish of the day on the track with a great run in the 200m final. She was followed over the line by Kitty, Bea and Imogen. In the boys race it was Harry who took 1st place with Zach and Elijah very close behind. In the 80m final we were treated to a thrilling race with Taylor running a blisteringly fast race, narrowly missing out on the school record of 11.07. Tristan and Harrison were close behind and it required a photo finish check to confirm who was 2nd and 3rd.

It was a great day where all of the athletes played a major role. I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. A big thanks must also be extended to our excellent sport leaders and teaching and support staff. There energy and enthusiasm was infectious and was a key contributor to the day.

  • Year 8 Sports Awards

Fri 08 Jul 2022 Mr McGrath

It was really lovely to gather our year 8 sports group together and share memories and give out awards and certificates in celebration of their sporting achievements. They have been a delight to teach, coach and support and we wish them all the very best and hope that many more sporting successes  and memories will be achieved. They have been a credit to the school and it is a real honour to work with them and watch them grow and develop. Not every pupil got an award but I hope they take great pride in the memories made at Hugh Sexey.
Grace received the girls outstanding cup. She has been a constant source of energy in PE and games and she has helped bring out the best in others. She has been ever present at clubs and continues to grow as a sports person. Grace also is very generous in the time she offers to the lower school and the first schools in her role as a sports leader.
Josh was the recipient of the boys Outstanding cup. Josh has been ever present in a number of sporting teams. Showing real promise in rugby, football and athletics. Josh has continued to push himself each year and he is so dedicated to being the best he can possibly be. He has one of the most impressive mindsets to learning and he couples that with an excellent repertoire of skills. On top of that he has been a wonderful ambassador for the school. Offering to help with multiple junior events and always carrying himself and conducting himself in a positive manner.
The Gareth Waterfield Cup was awarded to Harry. Harry has been a remarkable ambassador for Hugh Sexey. Playing in a number of teams and always conducting himself in the correct way. He has been an excellent captain of the school team and represented North Somerset in football after a number of strong performances each year. He adores competing against the best players and he is able to share his passion with our younger community. He has given so much to Hugh Sexey and we have been very fortunate to have him.

  • Year 7 & 8 Sports Day

Thu 07 Jul 2022 Mr McGrath

The Normans came out on top in a close run House Sports day for year 7 and 8. There was a new School record on the high jump for Lucy Taylor with a height of 1 metre 41. Grace Baker put in 2 valiant displays in pursuit of a record in both the 400 and 1500 metres. In both races she came out as winner in strong fields but she narrowly missed out on two long standing records. The same was true of Zak Tarring in the 100 metres. Disappointing for them but a further reminder of the proud sporting pedigree of Hugh Sexey.

Whilst it wasn't perfect conditions for an athletics meet, with a constant threat of rain running alongside constant wind the athletes all enjoyed themselves and played an active role in the track, field and participation events. It was pleasing to have some former pupils support the event and it is always great to catch up with these and see that their love of sport and competition resumes.

Thank you to all that helped support the occassion.

  • Medals for HSMS at the Dance Festival

Thu 07 Jul 2022 Miss Keep

Year 5,6 7 and 8 dancers travelled to Millfield School on 6th July to take part in SASPs South West Dance Festival. Hugh Sexey entered two dance teams; one in the Primary (KS2) category and one in the Secondary (combined KS3 and KS4) category. Both teams were fabulous; every dancer represented their school with pride and our parental support was second to none. It was a fantastic event.

Our KS2 dance explored the idea of belonging. The dance questioned, that although someone may seem to be the outsider to begin with, a healthy community can always open its arms to new members and be stronger. The dance, described by the judges as having a 'clear emotional dynamic that captured the change in thought and action' was performed with strong physical and expressive skills by its young members. The dance revealed a developing support that grew for each other along with the acceptance of one another. The team deservedly took silver medal and were really in the running for top spot.

KS3 were extremely nervous on arrival as they faced many KS4 dancers. The choreography itself negotiated the idea of self-worth and holding on to all that you have even when others try to take things from you. The dance itself was contemporary in style and told the story of a girl who felt she had nothing but the contents in her bag. When the bag is repeatedly taken, or placed out of reach, she finds the support of another who helps guide her to safety.  Our KS3 dancers took first place with the judges giving them full marks in all areas. Overall, the dancers worked together to tell the story, with every member taking responsibility for their part. A technically strong dance piece with expressive and physical skills to match.

Overall, a lovely creative based experience for all our pupils from rehearsal to performance, and after many years of not being able to perform to audiences it was refreshing to see. We would like to thank our parents that supported the school, our pupils certainly heard your welcomed cheers on stage and lastly thank you to all the teachers and pupils that took part either on or off stage, you worked very hard and collectively pulled a dance together that was quite special. Well done to all of those involved and, Year 8, we hope you leave to go to your next school with a fantastic memory of dance.

  • Year 6 Sports Day

Mon 04 Jul 2022 Mr McGrath

Congratulations to the Celts who came out on top in the year 6 Sports Day. It was a close run event throughout with all of the pupils making a valuable contribution. A number of athletes stepped up and filled in for absentees and this team spirit was a theme throughout the day. Records were set in the turbo javelin by Oliver May (15m 40) and Annie Bell (7m 10). Xander Squire and Olivia Stovell also set new records in the shot put with distances of 6m 50 and 4m 10 respectively. Phoebe Robinson and Libby Halford equalled the record of the high jump with a height of 1m 20.

The track events were a joy to watch with so many strong performances. Poppy Stevenson had a commanding day with wins in the 80m and 800m. Meghan Pilbeam took 1st place in the 200m and Libby got another first place finish in the 1500m. In the boys 80m we were tantalising close to a record and dare I say a different direction in the wind would have probably made a significant difference. Noah Burden won the 80m final in a very tight race. The 200m was even closer with a photo finish needed to distinguish first place for Xavier and second for Zak. In the 1500 metres Noah Dunne ran a beautiful race with Toby Fielder, Henry Hector and Emile Doran not far behind.

It was great to have a House Sports day again and thank you so much for all the sport leaders and staff who worked so hard.
