  • Year 8 Tag Rugby Festival

Wed 29 Sep 2021 Mr McGrath

Hugh Sexey pupils enjoy a fun filled afternoon of rugby

Many thanks to the year 13 A level PE pupils at Kings Academy for hosting the year 8 Boys and girls tag rugby festival. It was an excellent occasion and a great chance for many of our pupils to play at their future school. The standard of rugby was excellent with Fairlands bringing two very accomplished and competitive sides. All of the pupils selected were a credit to Hugh Sexey and an absolute joy to be around. Its been a long time since we have had a school rugby fixture and it was great to see everyone having fun. The boys team won the event and the girls team came second.

  • Running in the rain!

Wed 29 Sep 2021 Mr Jackson

    Years 7&8 cross country running

Ten runners from Years 7 and 8 braved the wettest day of September to take part in a cross country race at Millfield.  This included first time appearances in the Hugh Sexey cross country team by Hattie and Vin in Year 7 and Josh and Michael in Year 8.

To add to their challenge, they had a shallow pond to run through on each of the three laps.

Our first runner home, and fourth overall, was Fynn; more than making up for having to pull up last time following a mid-race collision.

Credit to all our runners for their positivity in conditions that would have literally dampened most spirits, for their encouragement to each other and for completing a tough race.

  • Finley Flies at Motorcross

Tue 28 Sep 2021 Finley & Mr Tatterton

“My name is Finley K 6JC & my hobby is Motocross. I’ve been riding Motocross since I was 6 & I ride most weekends at Cheddar Mx track. I also have training in Gloucestershire. Motocross is a very exciting hobby because when you line up at the starting gates, the excitement is who will get out of the gate first & lead the race, then ultimately win!!! I ride a KTM 65sx & it’s very fast!”

Congratulation to Finley 6JC who is working hard to develop his motocross skills and is literally 'Flying!'

Keep working hard and perfecting the balance and throttle skills needed to succeed.

Good luck in your quest to be the next Tim Gajser, a 4-time world champion, .

  • Cross Country Running Returns

Wed 15 Sep 2021 Mr Jackson

    Years 7&8 cross country

What a joy to be taking part in cross country running again.   This was the first of three cross country events at Millfield for Years 7 and 8 during September.

This one was the speedy course; a relative short and flat run of nearly 2 km.

Our runners have all done well to retain their fitness despite the lack of inter-school competition for 18 months.

There were excellent top five places for Zach (3rd) and Elijah (4th) in the Year 8 Boys race and Grace (4th) in the Year 7 Girls race.

  • Hugh Sexey Equestrian Team - Championship Update.

Tue 14 Sep 2021 Mrs Lovell

The Equestrian team had a fabulous time at the Championships in August and represented the school admirably!

This was the first British Show jumping Championships for Emilia, Hattie, Grace, Lulu and Ferris and required an overnight stay with their ponies to ensure they were there bright and early for their classes at 8.30am. They walked the course of 11 jumps which were up to height and 'dressed' but the children showed no signs of nerves, only excitement!

In the first class, the team were 1 of only 2 schools where all riders jumped 'clear' which meant there would need to be a jump off against the clock for first place.  They did really well to have no faults and get through to the jump-off; the excitement was electric!

Some more clear rounds, tight turns, cut- throughs and some really brave riding resulted in 2nd place for our school.  From a national round of qualifying competitions, the equestrian team were delighted to have reached the championships and over the moon to have achieved a place at the finals!

In the team's second class the competition was tough.  An unfortunate pole falling in the first round meant that they weren't in the jump off this time, but more brave riding and speedy rounds resulted in the team gaining 5th place and an individual 9th place for Ferris.

Everyone had such fun and the school is very proud of the children (and ponies!).

The team is now back in training and already competing to gain a place at next year's championships. Two new members have joined the team to replace Grace and Emilia who have moved schools.
