  • Year 8 Sports Leaders visit East Brent School

Thu 30 Jun 2016 Mr Waterfield

Today 11 Year 8 Sports Leaders went to East Brent Primary School to work with a Year 3 class on team Building activities.

Due to the poor weather we had to use the hall -  we were hoping to be outside and have considerably more space.  As a result we had to change some activities and think on the spot what we could do; the Year 8s rose to the challenge and did this very well.

The Sports Leaders were fantastic. They came up with some great activities for the Year 3 children to engage in and made it challenging for them to work as a team.

Here are some photos of them in action with the Year 3 class.  They were superb, thank you very much, from Mr Waterfield.

  • Year 6 at Barton Hall

Mon 20 Jun 2016 Mrs Best
Year 6 have recently returned from an action packed 3 days at Barton Hall in Torquay.  The weather was mostly kind to us and all the activities were hugely successful.  The children displayed great determination to complete the tasks, working well as a team on activities such as raft building and crate challenge, or throwing themselves into individual challenges such as abseiling and zip wire.

  • WOW Week - Mummers' Play

Fri 17 Jun 2016 Ms Taylor

WOW Week update... Thursday and Friday

Now that the pupils have returned back from Chepstow, they are busy preparing for their KS2 drama presentation. This afternoon (Friday) each tutor group will present a scene from an original mummers play, entitled ‘The Dragon, the Carrots and the Clumsy Jester’ written by University of the West of England PGCE trainees Emma Dawson and Becky Rousell.  The preparation is going brilliantly and we are all excited to see the final product.

  • WOW Week- Chepstow Castle

Fri 17 Jun 2016 Ms Taylor

Wow Week Update: Wednesday 15 June - Trip to Chepstow Castle

Today, Year 7 pupils travelled to Chepstow Castle in Wales, to visit the Medieval Fayre and Castle.  Some of the pork pies and potage that they pupils made in their workshops earlier in the week were served.  Pupils visited a Medieval Fayre, hosted by PGCE trainees from UWE, where they were able to participate in active learning, through making medieval crafts, including felting, metal work, leather stamping, pottery and also has a 'go' at medieval sporting activity such as crossbow shooting, trebuchet launching, and quoits.  They also toured the castle which dates back, in parts, to the reign of William the Conqueror.  As they toured the castle they met 'Living History Actors', and they were able to ask them questions about what life would have been like for them when they lived at the castle.  We were very lucky about the weather with only a few showers falling during our lunch break (where we were able to take cover under the trees).  The pupils were beautifully behaved, fully engaged, and I'm sure gained a great deal from the experience

  • Year 7 WOW Week - workshops

Fri 17 Jun 2016 Ms Taylor

Wow week is underway. This week HSMS are excited to be hosting 20 PGCE teacher trainees from the University of the West of England (UWE).  The trainees are working with pupils and running eight Medieval Britain themed cross-curricular workshops, where pupils are expanding their understanding about what it was like to live in Medieval times. Although the workshops are history based, they all incorporate a wide range of other subject areas and skills (textiles, art, food tech, DT, drama, science, maths, and, of course, a history workshop - on the life of Knights).  So far it looks like the pupils are having a lot of fun and learning a great deal too. We visit Chepstow castle on Wednesday, and by Friday each tutor group will have prepared a scene of a Mummers play to present to KS2 in the afternoon.

  • Well done Harriet: European Golf Championships

Fri 17 Jun 2016 Mr Lockley
Harriet , 6KC,  continued her 2016 golfing form and recently played in the European Golf Championships at Gullane Golf Club in Scotland (home of Scottish Open). The event hosts 650 golfers from across Europe and the rest of the World. Harriet played very well over the first 2 rounds to lie in 2nd place, but a great round of 67 (5 under Par) on the final day was enough to win the trophy for the Girls aged 11 grouping by 8 shots (finishing 5 over par for the 3 rounds played),

  • Year 7 take French to the First Schools

Tue 14 Jun 2016 Miss Kendall
24 Year 7 pupils recently took part in the annual First School French Cafe project, where they spent an afternoon at our feeder schools, teaching a lesson, running a quiz, and acting as waiters and waitresses serving French food and drink to year 4. The year 4 pupils had spent time in their French lessons preparing menus and learning how to order in a cafe, and the year 7 pupils had to apply to take part and spent their own time preparing for the day. The first schools were extremely welcoming to us, and we were very proud of all the children who represented Hugh Sexeys and made it a fun and memorable experience for the year 4s. Thanks too to Madame Merryfield who organised everything in the first schools!
  • Year 5 Cricket Team Wins Mendip Games Event

Wed 08 Jun 2016 Mr McGrath

Many congratulations to the year 5 Cricket team who have qualified for the Somerset finals after winning the Mendip games event. The team of 8 played Kwik cricket against Elmhurst A and B and Baltonsborough. They secured victories against all of the sides, and demonstrated some fine fielding and batting skills throughout the afternoon. This is a tribute to the hard work they have put into cricket practice and also the time they have invested into cricket outside of school. All of the players involved played very well with Will Creaser showing fine form with the bat. He hit a number of strong 6s and 4s and also proved to be a real team player by getting his batting partner into the game regularly. Douglas Sharp, Tom Bean and Oliver Richards all enjoyed commanding games and proved to be good all rounders with a potent combination of accurate bowling, steady batting and eager fielding. Charlie Rant and Archie Stamp shared the wicket keeping responsibilities and both made a number of impressive catches. William Bougourd and Kenny Poole completed the side and were equally effective with batting and bowling. The Hugh Sexey team were a very impressive unit and it was plasing to see them play with such enthusiasm and respect to the game of cricket.
Mr Andrew Skidmore from Somerset will be providing additional coaching to the year 5 students after school on a Monday for the rest of the summer term. Any players interested in representing the side should come to these practices and continue to train on Tuesday lunchtimes.

  • Gareth Waterfield wins top rugby award

Tue 07 Jun 2016 Mr McGrath
Congratulations to Gareth Waterfield for winning the Presidents people power award for his contribution to coaching rugby at Winscombe and Somerset. Gareth was invited onto the Twickenham pitch at half time during the England vs Wales match to collect the award in front of 82,000 people.
The nomination stated that "he was an exceptional coach who establishes amazing rapport with the players". It went on to say that "his work with boys and girls rugby from under 13 onwards is astonishing". His nomination also paid tribute to Gareth's tremendous energy and how generous he is with his time.
It is no surprise to everyone at Hugh Sexey that Gareth should be nominated and go on to win the award. We are very proud to have him amongst us, and just like the players at Winscombe benefit from his generosity and expertise, so to do the students at Hugh Sexey.

    Well done Gareth.
