  • Brothers swim in county championships

Tue 29 Jan 2019 Mrs Halford
Both Finley (7RH) and Charlie (6MJ) swam at the county swimming championships at Millfield School on Sunday 27th Jan where they had both qualified for the 50m breaststroke.

It was Charlie’s first time at the county champs (in the 50m Millfield pool) and he swam in the first heat. He swam brilliantly, winning his heat and taking 3 seconds off his personal best time which qualified him for the final. In the final he swam another pb of 44.8 sec finishing 4th in a close race where 2nd, 3rd and 4th all finished in 44 seconds. His time was good enough to get Charlie a regional championships consideration time.

Finley swam a great, but tough, heat from lane 8 in a very competitive age group. He finished 10th in his age group so did not make the final but beat his personal best by 2 secs and also gained a regional champs consideration time.

The regional champs will also be held at Millfield School in May.
  • Year 5 @ 'We the Curious', Bristol

Tue 29 Jan 2019 Mrs Callow
Year 5 had an exciting trip to We the Curious in Bristol on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th January to learn about Forces. The workshop was informative and the pupils were able to carry out their own investigations. The planetarium was ‘out of this world’ as we found out about Flying Machines. The pupils had time to explore the hands on exhibits on the lower and upper floor. A great start to our Forces Topic!
  • Zoolab visits HSMS

Mon 28 Jan 2019 Mrs Jarrett

On Thursday 24th January, Miss Waring (Leader of Science) organised for Year 6 to receive a visit from ZooLab, which gave the pupils an opportunity to have a close-up experience with a range of different organisms.. This was to support them in their current Year 6 Science module of classification..

Those children that wanted to were able to hold a corn snake and a hissing cockroach; to stroke a guinea pig, and to observe a white tree frog and a tarantula. There was much excitement and in some cases (Mrs Jarrett) a little trepidation, but even Mrs Jarrett overcame her fear of hissing cockroaches.

Here are some photos showing Year 6 pupils enjoying this “awe and wonder” experience at the start of their topic.

  • U11 Girls County Football Winners - Strode College 11/1/19

Tue 15 Jan 2019 Mr Waterfield

Our Under 11s girls retained the County trophy after putting in a superb display of football throughout the day in this competition.

Playing at Strode College against all the winners of the local schools tournament we were put in Pool A.

1st game vs Crockerne School - Hugh Sexey's immediately got down to business and the Badhen sisters, Abbie and Anika, both scored with superb finishes to get us of to a cracking start; we won the game 2-0

2nd game vs St Joseph's (Burnham on Sea) - Hugh Sexey's won this game 3-0.  The girls showed some great footballing skills, passing the ball around and enabling Katie Holmes, Ella Holmes and Anika Badhen to slot the ball home and give us 3-0 win. It was a very good game to watch and both schools played well.

3rd game vs Weston All Saints - Hugh Sexey's made some changes;  superb goal keeping from Maddy Rousell kept Hugh Sexey's in the game.  This game was heading for a 0-0 draw until Anika Badhen found the net quite late in the game.

4th game vs Holy Trinity - Hugh Sexey's confidence was high.  The girls immediately put pressure on Holy Trinity and with goals from Ella Saxon (2) and Abbie Badhen (2) we won the game 4-0.  Special mention must go to Evie Williams; despite only being in Year 5 she defended superbly and held her own well.  Lucy Taylor made her debut in goal - we are lucky to have 3 girls who enjoy playing in goal.

5th game - East Coker - Hugh Sexey's made some changes to rest some players for the later stages.  Indah Kayira showed everyone what a great player she is  - she can play in any position and do the job well. East Coker won the game 1-0.  Just one of those games where we couldn't finish, and their goal keeper was on very good form.

Hugh Sexey's came runners up in the Pool A and progressed to the Semi Finals playing against Somerset Bridge.

Semi Final - vs Somerset Bridge.  This was a VERY good game of football.  Captain Ella Saxon did a great job rallying the girls and psyching them up ready for this match.  It was a very even sided match. There was some great work from Ella Holmes in midfield, passing the ball to Ella Saxon who superbly set up Abbie Badhen; Abbie slotted the ball home scoring the only goal in the match and putting Hugh Sexey's in the final. This was a fantastic team effort and goal keeper Katie Holmes was superb, keeping a clean sheet.

The Final - was against St Nicholas from Radstock. (This was a special match as we found out that Mr Albrow's (Lead of Maths) daughter was playing for St Nicholas)

Everybody, including all the spectators, was nervous.  St Nicholas proved to be a good side, but after periods of good football from both schools, a long field kick from their goal keeper resulted in Ella Saxon booting the ball from past the half way line straight in to the top corner of the net, (a typical David Beckham goal).  A superb goal; definitely one of the best goals I have witnessed from the touch line. It was brilliant and I was delighted for Ella's parents - quite an emotional moment.

After that there was some pressure from St Nicholas, but superb defending from Hugh Sexey's.  Ella Saxon then scored a second goal, which ended the game 2-0 and crowned Hugh Sexey's as Champions!

A superb team effort from every one of the players - they now progress to the Regionals Finals and are very much looking forward to it

    Well done Girls

  • Christmas Appeal Gifts

Mon 07 Jan 2019 Mrs Le Hunte

A huge thank you to all staff and students (and their families) for supporting our Christmas Appeal.

Due to your phenomenal generosity, we were able to give a car-load of gifts to SIDAS (supporting families who have had to flee domestic abuse) and another car-load of gifts to the Salvation Army.

Both organisations are enormously grateful for the help we have provided to families in need.

    Thank you all so much!

  • Equestrian team success at NSEA Eventers Challenge competition.

Mon 07 Jan 2019 Mrs Beasley

The school equestrian team were out competing on Saturday at the NSEA Eventers Challenge at Kings Sedgmoor Equestrian Centre.
Nelly Lee, Asha Leavey and Grace Brazier all rode brilliantly in freezing conditions around a very challenging course of cross country and show jumps.
Nelly Lee was placed 2nd individually and has qualified for the National Championships at Hickstead. Well done Nelly and good luck!
  • Wells Cathedral Carol Service.

Mon 07 Jan 2019 Mrs Harrison
On the last  Monday of term we took part in a collaborative Carol Service at Wells Cathedral, together with Fairlands Middle School and Kings of Wessex. It was a real privilege so work alongside such talented musicians, and was a great experience for our pupils. Well done to all those involved.
