  • A Virtual Tour of Parliament

Wed 14 Dec 2022 Mrs Adair

On Wednesday afternoon, the pupils were engaged in a virtual tour of Parliament as part of the learning about the feature and function of our democratic political system to enhance their Citizenship studies.  Morgan and Damien were our live, virtual tour guides from the Parliament Education Office, and they provided a really informative narrative to accompany a 'street-view-type' journey throughout the Houses of Parliament.  Pupils and their teachers used the chat function in Teams to ask lots of amazing questions, and even suggested that Mr Tatterton should become Lord Tatterton!  One of the best questions asked was 'what is the craziest law ever made.  The answer - that the largest Sturgeon fish caught must be shown to the King!  We look forward to an in-school visit from the Parliament Outreach team in January who will be working with Y6 on a workshop called 'Campaign for Change'.

  • Book Fair Success

Thu 08 Dec 2022 Mrs Dourley

Hugh Sexey Middle School once again welcomed the Scholastic Book Fair last week.  Pupils were able to visit the fair during their library lessons as well as break time and all through the lunch hour.  This year's offerings were wonderful with familiar authors like David Walliams and Liz Pichon amongst exciting new titles from Sophie Anderson and Lisa Leuddecke.  There were books about football and gaming, books for little brothers and sisters and we even had a couple of advent calendars.  With tremendous support from our parents and carers we managed to sell £1711.02 which equates to over £500 in rewards to spend with Scholastic. Many thanks to all who attended and supported.

  • Staff vs Sports Leaders Hockey.

Tue 06 Dec 2022 Mr McGrath

As November rolled to a chilly conclusion the MUGA was the setting for some red- hot hockey. The sport leaders went into the game full of confidence. They were on the back of a successful term, with both the boys and girls teams enjoying lots of hockey. Hockey has been very popular this year and a number of the pupils who regularly attend training were available to play in this game.

As staff finished their marking and completed reports the game started with many sport leaders taking up places in the staff team. Sophia played striker briefly for the staff and converted a good goal. Ted was also a commanding presence in goal and Tilly put in a strong showing in midfield. Thanks to these players for helping to fill out the staff team.

The sport leaders side really took the game to the staff with Mike, Alex, Sayba and Eleanor prominent in the early exchanges. The staff team had plenty of hockey experience with Mrs Hart, Mr Whittaker, Mrs Cameron, Miss White and Mrs White all seasoned club players. Louie, Vinny, Charlie and Dan tried hard to get in behind the older legs but often the first few yards are made up in the brain rather than the body. The youngest player on the staff side, Mr Banwell, proved to be a real handful throughout. Taking the attacking awareness and skill he has honed on the football pitch, Mr Banwell was a constant menace on the left-hand side, showing deft touches and constant running. His pace was a frequent outlet for the staff team and they were able to put him into a number of dangerous positions. When Mr Drew arrived to take up the final place on the team, the staff team were just too strong for their younger opponents. The sport leaders gave everything but were unable to repel the staffs' attacks and also unable to unlock a defence that was expertly marshalled by Mrs Hart and ably supported by Mr Mallett and Mrs Scott. Some of the play from the staff team was just scintillating. One of the standout goals when the ball was worked across the back field and then played Crossfield to Mr Drew who finished skilfully.

It was a great game to watch and pleasing to see the attitude of our year 8s who never let their heads drop. Thanks to all the staff who came out to support.

  • Girls' Football at Shepton Mallet

Mon 05 Dec 2022 Mr Banwell

Match report Girls u11s Shepton Mallet

On 1st December a number of year 6 girls, accompanied by two girls year 5, travelled to Shepton Mallet to compete in a football competition. The girls were scheduled to play at least 3 games and possibly more, depending on the results. As there were only 3 games it meant the team had to win all 3 games in order to progress in the competition.

The first game began with a very strong start from Hugh Sexeys, with Harriet scoring 2 goals giving HSMS a 2-1 win in the opening game. The defence was kept strong by a solid partnership of Etta and Maddy.

Like the first game, the second game started strongly as Florence scored within a few minutes of kick off. The goal came from the midfield which was held by Amisha, Bethany and Tiyana. The game ended 1-0 to Sexeys; a big well done to our goalkeeper for the game (Brooke) who made a last minute save to secure the win.

The last game was tough. It was a scrappy game with not many chances, resulting in a 0-0 draw. There were good performances from Emily, Amelia and Olivia but unfortunately this wasn’t enough to win the game. The Girls won 2 games and drew 1, meaning that they missed out on a place in the final. Despite this it was a fantastic day and all the girls did amazingly well!

Thank you to all the schools involved and to Shepton Mallet sports centre for hosting the event.

  • First Schools' Gymnastics Festival

Mon 05 Dec 2022 Mrs Allen

t was very good to welcome our first school pupils back to the gym. We have been unable to host this event for a while due to Covid .

We welcomed Axbridge, Mark, Lympsham , East Brent , Wedmore and Weare schools . It was also good to see so many supporters.

There were roughly 70 Year three and four pupils. The aim of the event is for the pupils to experience some of the gymnastic activities they will take part in when they are pupils here at Hugh Sexey.

After a fun warm up... the "bean game" ( fast becoming a Hugh Sexey favourite) led by the year eight sports leaders , pupils worked alongside each other to vault, climb, jump, roll and balance.

It was thoroughly enjoyable and despite the large numbers , a very positive gymnastics experience for all.

Thank you to the year eight sports leaders who did a great job helping and supporting the younger pupils. Special mention to our year six gym leaders - Isla, Lilia ( with broken collar bone) Lily and Mia .

  • Boys' Hockey Development Day @ Millfield

Thu 01 Dec 2022 Mr Banwell

    Hockey Development day at Millfield

The Hockey development day was a great experience for the boys as they got to play against 6 other schools across Somerset. The Under 13s boys were all incredible and played with a great attitude this made the day an absolute pleasure. Team Captain Michael did a superb job throughout. He led from the front but also empowered those around him and ensured all players were well prepared and involved.. This was a non-competitive event but the games were inevitably played with great intent and passion. The backdrop of Millfields wonderful facilities proved to really encourage our pupils and helped contribute to an enjoyable and enriching experience. Not one person put a foot wrong the whole day, there was fantastic performances from all: Captain Michael, Henry, Harry and Alex proving to be deadly goal scorers. Defence was solid with Cam and Oliver. Daniel contributed to goals and it seemed as though Ted was running all day! Last but by no means least is Tom, who only conceding two goals in the whole day! The Boys won 5 and drew 1 – even though it was just for fun! Thank you to all the schools and Hailey at SASP who organised the event.
