Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Normans = 1st, Celts = 2nd, Saxons = 3rd, Vikings = 4th
The keystage 3 sports day was a thrilling 2 day event. The lead was constantly changing between the houses, with Mrs Taylor putting in almost as much effort as the year 7 and 8 athletes. The boys year 8 relay was an impressive spectacle with the Saxons getting a fast time of 59.9 seconds. Louis Bougourd of the Celts had a day to remember getting gold in the 800m with a time of 2.37, closely followed by Charlie Moss, Alex Richard and Lewis Critchley Hope. In the year 8 girls 800m, Grace Ashurst(Celts) secured 1st place with an impressive time of 2.35, followed by Georgia Thurling and Jemima Ryles. The year 7 race was won by Jack Boston (Vikings), with a time of 2.48 and Hannah Carter (Saxons) with a time of 2.54. In the year 8 400m, Grace White (Saxons) was very close to breaking the school record, with a time of 1.10. In the sprint events there were a few surprise results. Jack Roussell ran a fantastic 200m in 29.94 to get 1st place for Vikings, and Ethan Woolacot beat a very strong field to get 1st place in the 100m for the Saxons.
The students should all be very proud of the effort they put into the events. It was very pleasing to see them showing such commitment to their houses, and I hope the year 8 students enjoyed their last Hugh Sexey sports day.
Many thanks to the staff who contributed so much towards the 2 days.
I am thrilled to announce that after a very hot, intense afternoon the girls emerged the Victors of the tournament. Their opening match was against Wells Blue who had beaten them convincingly in a friendly last week. The girls went in with their heads held high and fielded with accuracy and commitment to hold Wells to only 2 ½ rounders. Captain Evie Puddy gave lots of encouragement and the girls hit their way to 4 ½ rounders, a great start which gave them much confidence. The next opponents were Selway who put up a good fight but were no match for our girls, Honey Mai Rich on form, fielding well at 3rd post. Fairlands were strong opponents and made the girls work for their win, consistent bowling by Alice Roy and a great catch by Kaitlin Pettitt keeping team morale high. The final game against Oakfield saw our team needing ½ a rounder from the last ball to win the game. Evie puddy stepped up to the square and smashed it deep before securing a rounder to finish. All the girls played brilliantly, I was impressed by their team spirit and support for one another. Abbie Bewley stood out as the overall player of the tournament playing the important position of 2nd post and not dropping a ball all afternoon. The girls have now qualified to represent Mendip at the Summer sports festival held at Millfield at the beginning of July. A great achievement and one they should be proud of!
Year 6 - Vikings - 1st place, Saxons - 2nd place, Celts - 3rd place, Normans - 4th place.
The year 6 sports day was a wonderful event, with clear blue skies, enthusiastic support and 3 school records broken. The students involved all made a huge contribution to the day, doing all they could to secure point for their house. It was a day to remember for the Celts relay team of Tom Bean, Jacob Aberdeen, Will Bougourd and Kenny Poole, as they broke a long standing record in the 4 x 100m relay with a time of 1.03.47. Daisy Becker Hughes continued her record breaking streak from last year with a record in long jump. Daisy jumped 4.00m to break the 23 year old record of 3.93m. A less traditional event that had a long standing record was the Welly wang. Polly Fowler was delighted to be confirmed as the winner in this event, with a new record of 17m. Other notable mentions go to Jemima Thurling who shook off earlier disappointment to win the 800m with an impressive time of 3.13. Will Creaser performed well in both the 200m and cricket ball throw. Evie Martin had a great day on the track winning the girls 200m. Oscar Boorman of the Vikings was 14 seconds shy of Oliver Fox's long standing 800m record with a great time of 2.50. Polly Fowler was nearly a double record breaker with a scorching time of 11.53 in the girls 80m. Tom Bean was also close to a record in the same event with an impressive time of 10.69.
It was a delight to see all of the students enjoy themselves and contribute to the competition. Well done to all involved, and many thanks to the sport leaders and staff for helping to run the event.
Year 5 - Celts = 47, Normans = 46, Vikings = 41, Saxons = 38
Hot june sun bathed the athletics track on the day of the year 5 sports day. On their first sports day at Hugh Sexey, it was pleasing to see the athletes take so much pride in representing their houses. Max Scantlebury and Ben Carter helped contribute to a thrilling 80m race, with Max just securing first place at the end. The girls 800m race was another excellent event, with Chloe Nicolaides emerging the winner. Will Martin was the winner of the 200m and really got the crowd going with his after race celebrations. All of the events were completed with real enthusiasm and a good sense of fun. The sports leaders, staff and support from parents really helped contribute to a lovely afternoon.
Final score:
Hugh Sexey, Blackford: 87 for 7 (20 overs)
Sexey's, Bruton: 78 all out (19.0 overs)
Hugh Sexey won by 9 runs
On the same day as the ICC Champions Trophy got exciting with a big run chase by Sri Lanka to defeat India, Hugh Sexey had a hard fought and tense finish win through to the semi-final of the Somerset school's cricket cup for U13s.
Hugh Sexey batted first with Sam Tucker top scoring on 23 and Charlie Jackson also achieving doubled figures.
A mid innings rally by Sexey's Bruton made for the tense finish but three wickets taken by Hugh Sexey in 10 balls led to the end of their innings with one over remaining.
Hugh Sexey's bowling was, at times, prolific with George Nuttycombe taking three wickets and George Ryan and Jacob Westbrook each taking two. Strong fielding played it's part too in the victory including good catches by Ed Phillips, Zak Wilkinson, Sam Tucker, Harry Banwell and "the legend" who is Morgan Roberts.
The game was played in a wonderful spirit by both teams and our thanks to Sexey's Bruton for a competitive and very enjoyable match.
