Year 7 Rounders - HSMS vs Wells Blue

Well done to the girls year 7 rounders team who put in a convincing performance against Wells Blue. All of the girls played with excellent organisation and attitude, and adapted well to the harder ball. Meghan Ireland got the player of the match, in the 14 and half to 6 victory. Rhiannon Kelly did a sterling job as captain and played with her usually conviction and good spirit. It was Mrs Scott's first fixture at Hugh Sexey, and she was very impressed with the way the girls played.

Twickenham Rugby Final- Exeter Chiefs vs London Wasps

50 pupils from KS2 and KS3 were lucky enough to be able to secure tickets to go Twickenham to watch the Guinness Premiership Final between Exeter Chiefs and London Wasps.

The game was always going to be a close one, with Exeter scoring first - a great team try from Jack Nowell right in our corner. In fact all the tries were scored right in front of us, which was great to see. London Wasps had a never- die attitude and kept putting pressure on the Chiefs. Both teams defended superbly, and put on a great display of what rugby is all about. The game ended 20-20 and went to extra time. The last kick of the game, from Gareth Steenson, won the game for the Chiefs and they were crowned champions. Most of the school were cheering for the Chiefs and all of us had a great day.

HSMS play cricket at Wells Cricket Club

3 cricket teams from Hugh Sexey were taken to Wells Cricket Club, on a beautiful day. Many thanks to Jason Hedeux for accommodating the girls year 7 team after their match was moved. Both of the boys teams performed with distinction. Kenny Poole was an outstanding captain in the group games, inspiring his team mates throughout. He lead by example in all areas and encouraged the team to play good, positive cricket. This was most evident in the fantastic victory against Fairlands; a team that contained a County player. Archie Stamp was fantastic with the bat, as was Jacob Aberdeen. Jacob McKenna proved to be a very useful all rounder and a calm and assured wicket keeper. Nick Whittingham showed his quality throughout with some dominant overs, whilst Luc Griffiths continues to improve and impress. The boys should be very proud of their performance and they were rewarded with a place in the final.

The other Hugh Sexey team, skippered by Will Creaser, started strongly against an organised St Benedicts team. Thelonious Jagger took some strong wickets whilst Olli Richards put in a fielding masterclass. In the semifinals Hugh Sexey put in a very commanding performance. Creaser, Will Bougard and Alex Scott all hit big scores. Tom Beane bowled and batted strongly. The most pleasing thing for me was the focus in the fielding and the enjoyment the players took from the game. Despite gaining a place in the final and putting in a great team performance it was pleasing to see that when the game ended the boys first reaction was to thank the opposition and congratulate Kennys team for reaching the final. This was a touch of class , and very pleasing to see.

So Hugh Sexey were to play Hugh Sexey in the final, watched on by the travelling girls year 7 team. The intensity of the game went up a level, but was played in a good spirit. Aberdeen batted strongly as did McKenna. But the closing in of the fielding prevented boundaries and even resulted in catches. When Will's team came to batt Griffiths did everything he could to prevent 6s and 4s. He dived like a goalkeeper to stop the ball but ultimately the experience of players like Richards, Beane and Bougard proved to be too much, and Will's team emerged as winners and booked a place in the Somerset finals.

I am always proud to take Hugh Sexey teams to fixtures, but the boys and girls were a true credit to the school and their families. All of them played with such spirit and respect for each other, and I was so pleased to see how happy they were for other people's achievements. Many thanks to SASP for allowing our girls to take part at such short notice and thanks also to Josh Talbot and Ms Luckett for volunteering to help with the teams. It is greatly appreciated
