  • Year 8 Rugby at Tor RFC

Mon 28 Feb 2022 Mr McGrath

The year 8 rugby team travelled to Tor RFC in Glastonbury for a match under the flood lights. With storm Eunice due to hit the following day it was pleasing that the game went ahead, and the weather held out. The recent heavy downpour of rain meant that conditions were not conducive for flowing and expansive rugby. The early exchanges were all about defence and Hugh Sexey did really well to keep Tor's powerful runners in check. Xavier, Oscar, Zach and the 3 Harry's got stuck into the action early on and clearly enjoyed the physical confrontation. As the game progressed Noah started to use his powerful ball carriers closer to the ruck and Dillion and Harry made a number of big dents in the defence. The ball was eventually shipped to Jack who crashed over for a deserved try. The game remained tight but sustained pressure meant Tor eventually went over to take the game to 1 try each at half time. In the second half Hugh Sexey started very brightly with Zak racing in for a great score. Josh then fielded an excellent kick and after a series of rucks, Harry dummied and darted through for a Captain try. This forced Tor into a reshuffle and change of tactics. They started to kick for the corners and forced Hugh Sexey to play into the wind. It was a clever strategy and one that comes with knowing your pitch and surroundings. Tor then started to get more out of their big runners and brought the game level to 3 tries each. In the end their greater experience showed and in the dying minutes they got the winning try after a number of phases.

The boys team should be very proud of their efforts and it was great to see them play again given the amount of School rugby they have missed. Thanks to all the parents/careers who came to support and thanks to Tor for a great game and for the after match hospitality.

  • Years 5,6,7 & 8 Netball vs Fairlands

Thu 17 Feb 2022 Mrs Allen

We were delighted that this fixture went ahead as the weather forecast on the day was bleak. Luckily, the predicted stormy weather held off and the girls were all able to play.

    Year 5

The girls were understandably nervous about their first match. They have all been playing a good standard of netball in their games lesson and this was reflected in their match. Captained by a very committed Ella J they showed good team work and the two shooters Kitty and Evie were very accurate . Fairlands also displayed good catching skills and this led to an inspiring game.

Final score Hugh Sexey 5 Fairlands 1

    Year 6

A very athletic team. They are fiercely competitive and determined. The shooting was tricky as the wind had picked up at this point. However, Libby and Sophia didn’t let this deter their ability. The final score

    Hugh Sexey 8 Fairlands 0

    Year 7

This team had played the previous evening and found themselves in a match which was very even. Fairlands displayed great centre play and the ball kept moving but in the first half no nets were scored. The second half was also very even but both teams managed to score.

Final score Hugh Sexey 1 Fairlands 1

    Year 8

These girls have been working together for a while and this showed . The movement and agility of all pupils was very pleasing to watch. Hannah , the captain was a good role model for the younger pupils as Goal Attack , her technique in shooting was text book. It was an interesting thought that both year eight teams will combine in year nine at Kings … a future very strong team I think.

    Final Score

    Hugh Sexey 6  Fairlands 0

It was pleasing to give our sports leaders another opportunity to coach and in some cases umpire. Thanks to Alexa, Grace ,Zara, Liberty, Felicity and Olivia for their support.

Both myself and Miss Evans ( the PE teacher at Fairlands ) were delighted to be able to hold such an uplifting festival after Covid has prevented fixtures.

  • Year 7 Netball vs Wells Blue School.

Wed 16 Feb 2022 Mrs Allen

Year Seven Netball A and B

A great afternoon of netball for the pupils. Their first away fixture this term after committed training on a Monday lunch . A long match of 12 minute quarters.

The A team fought bravely against strong opposition. Grace B was voted player of match by the opposition and displayed her high level of fitness at centre. The defence led by Tilly and Poppy looked determined but the shooter from Wells was very accurate. Well done Tilly, Poppy, Elyssa, Grace, Hattie, Leila and Iris. Final score 21-7 to Wells

The B team led by Alice F had a close match and the two teams were a good match. The defence led by Saber and Katie intercepted many passes and Grace S was able to accurately shoot . Well done to Katie, Saber, Tilly, Alice, Freya , Grace
(player of the match) and Sophia .Final score - Wells Blue won 11-7

It was especially good to see three year eights, Hebe, Heidi and Hannah supporting their team; thank you.  The girls had arranged their own transport and I know the year sevens really appreciated their support.

  • Somerset Schools Athletics Association - Cross Country Championships

Tue 08 Feb 2022 Mr Jackson

    SSAA Cross Country Championships

14 runners gave a fantastic effort for Hugh Sexey at the Somerset schools cross country championships at King's College in Taunton.

The course was deceptively challenging; deceptive because the undulating and muddy sections were hidden from view for spectators.

Our runners, which included six first timers, were:

Year 7 girls - Alice and Grace

Year 7 boys - Ben, Leo, Vin and Will

Year 8 girls - Ella, Ruby J, Ruby T and Zara

Year 8 boys - Elijah, Jack, Oli and Zach

Our highest placed runners in each race were Grace, Zara, Elijah and, arriving together in unison, Ben and Vin.

Grace continued her amazing form coming in second in the Year 7 Girls race and just a few strides from first.

Not the best tactical decision but credit to Zach who, on noticing his race number had fallen off, ran back to pick it up and dropping several places in the process.

  • Under 13s indoor cricket tournament.

Mon 07 Feb 2022 Mr McGrath

On Thursday the 3rd of February Hugh Sexey U13 Boys travelled to St. Katherines School to play in a three team tournament against the hosts and Backwell School. The Team faced Backwell first and were first to bat. Eddie and Xavier got the team off to a great start hitting some great shots and got a good amount of runs on the board. We kept this momentum going with some great batting performances and finished the innings with 59 runs from 6 overs. Backwell required 60 to win but the teams bowling was too strong and managed to bowl them all out for a score of 39, Ethan and Fin in particular showed great skill with their bowling to help Hugh Sexey progress to the final against St.Katherines. In the final the team bowled first but a well drilled St. Katherines hit a massive 79 runs. The team couldn’t quite match the batting score but gave it a fantastic effort and finished runners up.

  • Under 13s football: HSMS vs Millfield in the Somerset Cup.

Mon 07 Feb 2022 Mr McGrath

Well done to the under 13s football team who have progressed to the semi finals of the Somerset cup after beating Millfield 2-1. It was a tight and cagey match with both sides giving everything. Josh produced some fine saves to keep them out and Captain Jack and Declan were impervious in the centre of midfield. The strong wind and cold conditions meant that Mr Kemsley altered the game plan slightly and this direct approach resulted in an early goal for the prolific George. With the game at 1-1 the defence held firm with Tom, Harry, Charlie and Toby in commanding form. Inevitably the decisive chance fell for George and he finished with aplomb. With the game in the balance Millfield made one last attack but the commitment of Dillon meant they couldn’t grab an equaliser.

Well done to the team and thanks to Millfield for a great game.

  • Cross Country race at Palace Fields, Wells

Mon 07 Feb 2022 Mr Jackson

    Years 5&6 cross country - race 3

Well done to Bella, Bethany, Libby, Lulu, Meghan, Poppy G, Poppy S, Adam, Euan, Henry, Laurence, Louis, Theo and Tristan who all gave their best in race 3 of the Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League.

It was the first time the race has taken place at Palace Fields in Wells; a challengingly hilly course.

Fantastic runs from Poppy S (1st), Libby (4th) and Bethany (13th) who are helping to consolidate the Y5&6 Girls team in second place out of 17 participating schools.

Fantastic performances too from our debutant runners Louis and Theo.

Most of our runners achieved their best placings of the season.

Thank you also to the attending parents and carers and Mrs Fox for their help and support.

  • Under 13s Football - Somerset Cup & Somerset League

Wed 02 Feb 2022 Mr McGrath

Match Report: Somerset Cup Vs Backwell (A)

On Tuesday the 18th of January Hugh Sexeys U13 team travelled to Backwell school to continue their cup run. On a very difficult pitch to play football on Hugh Sexey started on the front foot and were rewarded when George curled the ball into the far corner to put the team 1-0 up. Hugh Sexey continued to put the pressure on in the first half and forced the Backwell goalkeeper into a number of fine saves. Hugh Sexey started the second half like they did the first when a fine pass from Alfie found George and he slotted the ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-0. Backwell then threw everything to try and get a goal but some resolute defending from the team prevented them from doing so. With 5 minutes to go Backwell finally managed to get the ball in the back of the net to set up an intense finish for Hugh Sexey. But in the last minute of the game Liam was played through and sealed Hugh Sexeys place in the quarter final of the competition. It was a great performance from the team who really showed their intent from minute 1. We now look forward to welcoming Millfield on Tuesday the 1st of February to try and book our place in the Semi Final.

Match Report: Mid Somerset League Vs Crispin (A)

On Tuesday 25th of January the U13 Team travelled to Crispin School in the start of their league campaign. Crispin started the better of the two teams after a great corner was headed in to put the opposition 1-0 up. The team reacted really well to going 1-0 down and showed great desire to get themselves back in the game. After some hard work by Ruby, Finn and Harry, George was played through and brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded. Hugh Sexey missed the penalty but did not dwell on it and continued to battle to get back into the game. On the stroke of half time a ball over the top found Crispins Striker who placed it into the net which meant the team went into half time 2-0 down. The second half began and the team were instantly back into the game when George saw Crispins goalkeeper off his line and struck the ball into the back of the net. The team used this momentum and went and made it 2-2 when the ball dropped to George on the edge of the box and he found the net again. Crispin then capitalised when Hugh Sexey failed to clear their lines to make the score 3-2 to the hosts. Again the teams heads didn’t drop and in the last minute George pounced on an error by Crispins goalkeeper to score his hattrick and secure a great point for the team.
