  • Under 13s Cricket - Schools' Indoor Cup

Wed 31 Jan 2018 Mr McGrath

Commiserations to the boys under 13s cricket team who were unable to progress to the next round of the Schools indoor cup. A strong start was made against Chilton, with Sam Tucker, George Nuttycombe, Will Creaser and Tom Spinks all hitting big scores in the allotted 6 overs. Some ambitious and well placed shots were used against their efficient bowling order and it meant that with a score of 46 to beat their batters had to come out swinging. Will Flavin was first to profit from this catching a ball of a Lewis Richards bowl. Richards then took the following wicket and the boys were on a roll. Creaser, Ollie Richards and Nuttycombe all bowled well reducing Chilton to 15. As Chilton had only just lost to Haygrove, the boys went into the final match in buoyant mood. The decision was made to change the batting order to give others a chance. A noble and considerate gesture. The batting team protected their wicket well but brave fielding by Haygrove meant that after Nuttycombe retired runs were drastically reduced culminating in a 33 run total. When Haygrove stepped into batt they were able to hit a few early runs and capitalise on some rare Hugh Sexey errors. With 3 boys left Haygrove eclipsed our score and with that progressed to the next round.
Congratulations to Haygrove and best of luck for the next round.

  • Road Safety Workshop for Year 8s

Mon 29 Jan 2018 Mrs Harrison
On Friday our Year 8 pupils took part in an innovative workshop - ‘Ghost Street’ - led by Somerset Road Safety Officers, and designed to help teenagers make informed decisions about road safety.

The workshop equipped our pupils with the skills and awareness to handle dangerous or unfamiliar situations on the road. Key topics covered were: distractions, seatbelts, cycle safety and speed. Each of these areas was backed-up by facts and discussion points aimed specifically at getting the pupils to talk about the issues.

  • Year 5 Visit Noah's Ark Farm Zoo

Mon 29 Jan 2018 Mrs Edmonds
The children had a wonderful day at Noah’s Ark Farm Zoo. They took part in an interesting adaptation workshop where they looked at animal parts and real animals, including a python, a tortoise and two cockroaches named Colin and Celia!
They spent the rest of the day exploring the zoo and identifying the adaptations of lots of other animals including elephants, giraffes, gibbons and camels.
  • Year 8 Boys Football v Crispin

Thu 25 Jan 2018 Mr Lamb

    Thursday 18th January

This was the Year 8 Football team’s first fixture of 2018 and they couldn’t have got off to a better start. New team captain Nathan Radford got the team warmed up well and they looked very focused and organised as the game started.

Within 2 minutes of the kick off the team were in full flow already. After great play from Ronnie Newton out wide, he delivered a perfect cross for Will Flavin who finished smartly at the front post. For the rest of the first half the game was evenly poised with few attempts on both goals. After the half time break Crispin came out determined to get back into the game. They were playing the better football at this point but the Hugh Sexey back four stayed strong. Special mention to Ethan Floyd and Fraser Bruce who didn’t let the Crispin strikers have an inch of space. Heading into the last 10 minutes the score was still 1-0. In a bid to close out the game Hugh Sexey added an extra midfielder and played a lone striker in George Moss. With five minutes remaining George Moss broke through on goal and calmly slotted the ball home to seal the game.

Overall, a very strong first performance of the year for the team. Congratulations to all the players and especially Sam Tucker who stepped in in goal and played brilliantly.

    Mr Lamb

Squad: Sam Tucker, Amar Kolattu, Ethan Floyd, Fraser Bruce, Ewan Duckett, Ronnie Newton, George Moss, George Nuttycombe, Nathan Radford (C), Will Flavin, Sam Relf & James Ford.

  • ESFA U11 COUNTY FINALS

Wed 17 Jan 2018 Mr Waterfield

On Friday, 12th January our Under 11 girls went to compete in the Football County Finals at Strode College, playing against the area winners around our region.

The pitches were long and narrow which made it difficult for the girls to play their normal game of football. However the girls knew exactly what they needed to do: to play a short, passing  game, which they all did superbly.
Throughout the tournament we were in Group B, and had to play 5 games. We won 4 and drew 1, which was enough to win the group and progress through to the Semi Finals.
Special mention must go to: Maddy Durrant for her clinical goal finishing which was outstanding all day, to Olivia Fuller for her work rate - a machine running around everywhere working tirelessly, and to Ella Saxon for scoring what was goal of the season for me. Ella saw the keeper come off her line, and scored from the half way line, the ball flying into the top corner. Her parents who were there supporting couldn't believe what they had seen! This fantastic goal reminded me of David Beckham's goal against Wimbledon in 1996. Cerys Webb was outstanding playing in different positions, someone who can play absolutely anywhere is a real useful tool have in your team .

In the Semi Finals, we were up against Trinity School.  We knew this would be a tough match, and it was. Hugh Sexey's won 1-0 and booked themselves in to the final against Portishead School. With great football being played by both schools, this game ended in 1-1 draw and went into extra time. At the end of extra time the score was still 1-1, so the game was decided by the dreaded penalty shootout.
Goal keeper Edie Pargeter was superb, saving 3 of Portishead's spot kicks. Despite the mounting pressure Olivia Fuller, Maddy Durrant, and Aida Rothery scored 3 great penalties and won Hugh Sexey's the cup!
Hugh Sexey's now progress through to the Regionals finals - date to be confirmed.
A very well done to all  10 girls who participated on the day. It was a truly brilliant team effort; you played as a team and played for each other, which was the key for me. Well Done!

    Mr Waterfield

  • Year 7 Trip to Hinkley B Power Station.

Thu 11 Jan 2018 Mrs Adair (Taylor)
On Tuesday 9th January, a group of 30 Year 7 pupils travelled to Hinkley B power station to learn about nuclear power generation, and to consider how future demands for power in the UK will be met.  The pupils had a great talk from the EDF  education officer, before participating in a tour of the facility. All the guides were extremely knowledgeable; the children were very well behaved and asked many interesting questions. Our pupils were very excited to learn about  the great variety of jobs that Hinkley C will create.

  • Shoe fitting at Jolaurabi School, Kenya

Thu 11 Jan 2018 Mrs Adair (Taylor)

Last summer, on the last day of  term, many of our HSMS pupils generously donated their used school shoes which they had outgrown.  Today was the very special day, when charity workers from 'Educate the Kids' travelled to Kenya, to fit and distribute shoes for the children as they start their new school year.  Most the children attending the sponsored school are so poor that their families would never be able to afford a pair of shoes.  These children often walk a long way from rural villages to get an education, and without shoes, risk injury and disease which would force them to be absent from school.  The children are most grateful for you generosity.  Once again we will aim to collect used shoes to donate to Jolaurabi School, on the last day of summer term.  You are always welcome to donate used shoes at any time of the year by sending them in to school for the attention of Mrs Adair (Taylor).

  • HSMS Equestrian Team - Eventers Challenge

Tue 09 Jan 2018 Mrs Beasley
On Saturday 7th January two members of the school equestrian team braved the extremely cold conditions to compete at the National School Equestrian Association Eventers Challenge competition at Kings Sedgemoor.
Maddy Ross rode her pony, Bond and Maisey Mitchell rode her new pony, Zaria. They had to jump around a very long and complex course made up of a mixture of show jumps and cross country fences. This was the first time that either girls had competed in this type of competition and they both did brilliantly to get clear rounds, narrowly missing out on a place. Both girls and ponies looked lovely in their school colours! Well done both of you.
