  • Year 6 Boys' Football : Lions vs Rangers

Fri 31 Mar 2017 Mr McGrath
Well done to all of the boys involved in the inter school football match, that took place after school on Thursday 30th March. It was beautiful conditions for free flowing football, and the players selected did not disappoint. It was a pleasure to see so many involved in the match, with a number of players showing a new found enthusiasm for the sport of football. Ethan Ryles was a rock at the back, and did a great job in his first competitive game. Ben Penwell and Freddie Willis also looked very comfortable, and offered great width and support to their side. On the other team it was great to see George Crowther, Jack Chaplin, Ollie Ham and Adam Davies representing the school. All of who played very well throughout. The game was close throughout. Frankie Burke opened the scoring for the Hugh Sexey Lions after an excellent quick break initiated by Jacob McKenna and Oscar Manley. The Hugh Sexey Rangers promptly hit back with a Louis Ramos wonder strike from just outside the box. The game continued to switch sides, with keepers Marshall and McKenna both putting in big shifts. Indeed a big thanks must go to these two, who gleefully took the chance to play in this game, even though they had played at Millfield in another arranged fixture the previous day. The game remained 1-1 for some time, with Harry Naish and Kyle Downie playing with real tenacity. After a short corner, Jack State found space to smash home a rebounding shot. It was a typical State Goal and it put the lions in front. Burke then made it a draw and a brace of goals for him, with a neat finish at the near post. With the game in the balance both keepers made fantastic saves. The game could have gone either way, and a draw would have been a fair reflexion. However, with only minutes remaining Olly Fulcher smashed the ball home to make it 3-2 for the Rangers.
All of the players should be immensely proud of their efforts this term. If they keep working hard they will continue to develop as players and people. Many thanks to the parents who came and supported.
  • Mendip Junior Cross Country League Final

Fri 31 Mar 2017 Mr Jackson

We had a team of just six boys for the final race of the Mendip Junior Cross Country League.

Despite the smaller team, it was another strong performance from all our runners with Hugh Sexey securing a very credible 4th out of 22 schools in the end of season placings.

A top 10 finish for Oscar has also earned him an invite to represent Mendip in a Somerset inter-area match in April.

  • Yr 7 Girls' Football: HSMS vs Wells Blue

Thu 30 Mar 2017 Mr Lamb

Tuesday 28th March, Year 7 Girls

    Hugh Sexeys v Wells Blue

Squad: Millie Thomas, Evie Jones, Grace Adams, Evie Clements, Tilly Boley, Harriet Griffiths, Emilie Peake, Rhiannon Kelley, Izzy Cook, Jessie Woodcock & Millie Pargeter.

This friendly was a great chance to try out new players for the year 7 team. Rhiannon, Tilley & Millie were all competing in their first ever football match and year 6’s Jessie & Millie joined the team. The game started and Wells Blue instantly put Sexeys under a lot of pressure but some really strong defending from Grace and great goalkeeping from Millie kept them out. Sexeys eventually started to find their rhythm and started passing the ball about. Emily & Tilley were starting numerous attacks but Izzy & Rhiannon were being frustrated by the Wells Blue goalkeeper. At half time it was 0-0. Jessie & Millie came on for the second half and had an instant impact. They combined well throughout causing Wells Blue lots of problems and within 5 minutes of the second half Sexeys were 3-0 up, two goals for Izzy and one for Jessie. As the half went on the girls became more and more confident and were dominating the game. The defence were solid and pushing up, which lead to a great goal from Grace Adams to make it 4-0. Wells Blue then tightened up and looked dangerous on the break but when Jessie cut in from the left and found the top corner with a great strike it sealed the game. 5-0. Izzy cook who was brilliant throughout was rewarded with her hat trick goal. Then the game was finished off in style with a great passing move started by the defence which ended with Tilley squaring the ball for Rhiannon to score in her first ever match. The game ended 7-0 and a really impressive performance from everyone.

The year seven team travelled the long journey to Frome to represent the school in netball.
The girls have been training on a Thursday night and two of the players are playing with Tor ladies.
Our first Match was against Well Blue. It started well with some great  interceptions  from captain, Rhiannon. Mia Johnson shot one goal despite the windy conditions. Wells Blue scored five and went onto win.
The second Match was against Selwood school and I was very proud of the way the girls played in this game. Sagda was moving around the court with great agility. The defence was strong  from Millie, Ella and Meghan. Grace and Millie  C slowed the game down . Great team play. Hugh Sexey won this match 4-2
Our last Match was against Crispin school. This was a very close game and the ball moved swiftly from one end of the court to the other. The final score was 3-3 .
The player of the tournament was Rhiannon Kelley who has played brilliantly all term.

  • Year 3 Multi Skills Festival

Thu 23 Mar 2017 Mr McGrath
Many thanks to all the first schools for attending the year 3 multi skills events. The sport leaders ran the event and once again showed themselves to be trustworthy and compassionate leaders. There was a range of events being run, with football, hockey, rugby and relay running part of the programme. The first schools were mixed together so they could experience working with other people, and the sport leaders did a terrific job of keeping them enthused throughout.
As is to be expected in the middle of March, the weather did threaten to spoil the day. With damp surfaces and black clouds on the horizon there was always a chance that the event would have to be cancelled. Thankfully the weather was kind, and all of the boys and girls got the chance to enjoy themselves.
Many thanks to Mr Waterfield for arranging the event; we all wish him well in his recovery.  It is a tribute to the sport leaders that they were so organised, even in his absence. Extended thanks must go to the sport leaders, who once again showed themselves to be fine ambassadors for Hugh Sexey Middle School.

  • The Great British Space Dinner Challenge

Wed 22 Mar 2017 Miss Latti
This term Year 5 pupils have been working on the Great British Space Dinner Challenge. Pupils were required to work in teams to research the dietary needs of an astronaut and apply their knowledge by designing a recipe and making a meal which was nutritious, suitable to be eaten in space and British themed. The Year 5 pupils displayed excellent teamwork and communication skills whilst creating some fantastic meals.
