  • U13 Girls Rugby Tournament

Mon 20 Mar 2017 Mr Lamb

    Tuesday 14th March 2017

Due to the popularity and quality of our girl’s rugby we were able to enter two teams into the tournament. After a 45min journey to Castle Cary RFC all the girls were excited to play.

    Hugh Sexey Warriors

Squad : Aisling Kelway, Millie Thomas, Izzy Cook, Izzy, Richardson, Izzy Clarke, Hannah Carter, Hannah Gazzard, Harriet Griffiths, Melissa Neil, Daisy Moss & Leah Rialas.

The warriors started their tournament off with a tough game versus Bucklers Mead. A close fought game with all the girls defending brilliantly ended in a 4-2 defeat. Next up was Holyrood. The girls started the game strongly and the influential Aisling Kelway bagged two tries. They dominated possession throughout and won 3-0. The final two games of the day were against King Arthur and Wells Blue. King Arthur were a physical side with some tricky players. The game was 0-0 until the last minute when King Arthur scored a late breakaway try taking the match 1-0. The game versus Wells Blue was a smaller sided game as they had fewer players. Special mention to Millie Thomas and Harriet Griffiths who helped Wells Blue out and performed excellently for them. The Warriors put in their best performance of the tournament showing off some great passing moves. Tries from Melissa, Daisy & Leah won them the game 3-1. Two wins out of four a great performance on their first outing as a team. Congratulations.

    Hugh Sexey Wolves

Squad: Grace White, Evie Puddy, Lexie Woolcock, Grace Richardson, Poppy Whitingham, Anna Littlewood-Hilsdon, Kaitlin Pettitt, Abbie Powell, Charlotte Watson, Lucy Baker & Holly Hunt.

The Wolves first game was against Ansford. Captain Grace White started the game very brightly and was key in helping them score 6 unanswered trys. Holly Hunt getting herself 3 tries. The next game was against King Arthur. Confident from their last game the wolves started fast again. Some great handling skills from Anna Littlewood-Hilsdon combining well with Poppy Whittingham lead to an early try. They dominated the game throughout and controlled possession, running out 6-0 winners again. The third game came as the girls toughest test. Bucklers Mead were well organised and physical putting the girls under pressure from the first whistle. With only 2 minutes left the girls found themselves 3-2 down but then after a late spell of pressure, two tries from Grace White secured the third win. Final game for the Wolves was against oakfield. The team saved their best performance for last winning the game comfortably 8-0. The team really gelled well and played some fantastic rugby. Four wins out of four meant Hugh Sexey Wolves were the only team to win all their games and win the tournament.

Thank you very much to Mr Waterfield who has worked closely with the girls the last few months. The hard work really paid off.

  • Netball Festival Yr 3 & 4

Fri 17 Mar 2017 Mrs Allen
Thursday 22nd March Netball year three and four festival
It was a rather chilly and fresh afternoon but this didn't stop a great  afternoon of netball. There were five teams represented- East Brent, Mark,Wedmore,Weare and a representative team from Hugh Sexey year five. After a brief discussion with staff reserve players from each school formed the "all stars"team which meant we could play three matches at any one time.
The year eight netball team umpired and coached each match with great support from staff and families.
I was impressed with the standard of play from all the youngsters - very exciting potential for the future.
Thank you to all for the hard work and commitment .
Wedmore First School  were the winners of the cup . Well done.

  • Somerset Cross Country Finals

Mon 13 Mar 2017 Mr McGrath
Well done to Grace - 8GDA, and Hannah - 7JNB, for finishing in the top 5 in the Somerset Cross Country finals. The two girls have worked very hard during cross country practice with Mr Jackson, and have put in a tremendous amount of training in their own time. Hard work and commitment will always bring greater reward. Hannah finished 3rd in her category and Grace 5th.

  • Yr 7 House Football Matches

Fri 10 Mar 2017 Mr McGrath
The Celts emerged victorious in the year 7 house football competition. The weather conditions were perfected for football, and despite the repeated use of the fields the surface was suitable for some passing football. The standard of football was high, although it must be said that the expectations placed on some players was at times a little unrealistic. Digby Oaten performed well in all of the matches as did Ronnie Newton and George Ellis. Tyler Downie put in an inspired performance and George Moss had an afternoon to remember with some excellent goals. The Saxons finished 4th, closely followed by the Vikings and then the Normans in 2nd place. Thanks, as always, to the staff who lent their support. Thanks must also go to the students who helped referee the matches.
  • Loca Netball Derby - HSMS vs Fairlands

Wed 08 Mar 2017 Mrs Allen
    Netball versus Fairlands Middle School.
    March 7th
All four year groups were represented today at the annual netball competition between Fairlands and Hugh Sexeys. It was great to see so many girls taking part and I would like acknowledge all the other girls who have been regularly training in Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Also it has been great to have the support of Mrs. Callow and Mrs. Trinnick who have been coaching the key stage two teams this year.
All teams played four quarters of ten minutes.
I was fortunate to be able to umpire all four teams.
Year five played very well with some accurate shooting from Grace Brazier and captain Winnie White. They have certainly improved with their recent match experience at Strode College.  Two girls of the match Alex Thomas and Grace Brazier.
Year six played well having just played two hours of house netball. This was a close match and they never gave up. Girl of the Mach was Ella Woodcock .
Year seven had an exciting match and the strong defence led by Millie Thomas meant it was difficult for Fairlands to score. Girl of the match was Millie Court
Year eight have not had as many fixtures this term due to the production but this team played gracefully and with good team spirit. The two teams will be a strong force when they all play together in year nine. Alice Roy was voted team player of the match with very accurate Goal shooter skills.
    The final scores....
    Year five won 21-0
    Year six lost 15-9
    Year seven won 22-2
    Year eight won 21-6
    Congratulations to all netball players

  • Year 6 House Football

Wed 08 Mar 2017 Mr McGrath
The year 6 house football competition provided a great spectacle of highly charged and skilful football. The standard throughout the competition was very high, and it was pleasing to see every student make a worthwhile and proud contribution towards their houses. There was some excellent team football on display, and fine performances and goals from the likes of Frankie and Max Burke, Harvey Pearn and Jacob McKenna. All of the games were tight, but the Vikings managed to win everyone of the games finishing with 18 points. They were followed by the Saxons and then the Celts and the Normans. All of the students should be proud of their contribution. Thanks also to the teachers who came to support and the referees, Charlie Starks and Alex Richard.

  • Yr 5 House Matches- Football

Tue 07 Mar 2017 Mr McGrath
Many congratulations to the Vikings in year 5 who emerged victorious during the first set of House football matches this week. The standard of football was high throughout and it was evident how much it meant for the boys to represent their allocated house. Despite the conditions not being ideal for passing football, the boys did their best to play positive football. It was pleasing to see that everyone enjoyed the event. Special thanks must go to the year 8 sport leaders, Sebastian Martin, Louis Bougard, Charlie Marsh and Harry Banwell who acted as referees for the games. all of the games were very close, the Celts picked up 4 points, the Saxons and Normans tied on 7 points and the Vikings clinched it with 11 points. All of the players should be proud of their efforts.
