Well done to Alex (Year 5) and Hannah (Year 6) on their fantastic performances at the biathlete world tour series in Austria. Alex achieved Gold and Hannah was close to a medal too. Good luck to both in Portugal in July.
The year 6 cricket team were crowned Mendip champions in a fine afternoon at Wells Cricket club. The cricket on show was of a very high standard, and the kwik cricket formula provided a nice opportunity for the players to experience playing against other schools. Hugh Sexey enjoyed a successful afternoon beating Elmhurst B team, Fairlands and then Elmhurst A in the final. All of the players involved were on top of their game, with captain Sam Tucker leading by example. Ben Frost and Izzy Talbot bowled well all afternoon and George Nuttycombe had an excellent afternoon with the bat and bowl. Lewis Richards played his first game of the season and looked very assured throughout. Oscar Simms Preston also was giving the chance to bowl some overs and looked assured and confident. All of the players involved should be very proud of their performance. The team will now go through to the Somerset final.
Thanks to Mr Hedaux for his work during the event, and Mr Albrow for his tireless work with the cricket team.
Hugh Sexey cricket team are through to the final of the Wylie shield after a strong showing against Wembdon school. Wembdon looked a challenging opposition with a number of tricky bowlers. This proved to be the case in the first few overs when a couple of wickets were taken from the Hugh Sexey batters. Fortunately, the players started to find their rhythm, with Tom Spinks hitting a couple of well executed 4s to build up the score. Jamie Wilbourne played his first competitive game for the score, and grew in confidence and stature as the overs progressed. George Nuttycombe also batted well against a strong opening bowler. As the innings progressed the Hugh Sexey pairs improved, and showed good communication to build up the runs total. Sam Tucker then hit four 4s to add a significant amount of runs to the tally and put Hugh Sexey on 256.
When Wembdon came into bat it looked like it could be a bad afternoon for Hugh Sexy, with 19 runs hit on the first 3 overs. Thankfully Isac Nichols held his nerve and delivered two excellent overs, taking 3 wickets and keeping the score down to a minimum. Wilbourne also contributed with some very brave fielding, and Oscar Simms Preston did a fine job keeping the wicket against some sharp bowling. This galvanised the players and was followed by a good second over for Fraser Bruce. With Spinks, Nuttycombe and Tucker the remaining 3 bowlers, confidence amongst the players was high. The bowlers didn't disappoint and managed to keep the score down to 236, meaning Hugh Sexey progress to the final.
Well done to all the players involved, it was an enjoyable game of cricket played in a good spirit. Thanks to Wembdon and thanks to Mr Albrow for his work with the team.
