  • Girls' Under 13s Football vs Fairlands

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mr McGrath

Hugh Sexey hosted Fairlands in an entertaining game of Under 13s Girls Football. Hugh Sexey started brightly with the core of year 7 girls who attend training showing real improvement in their play. Annabel and Erin were rock solid at the back and not backwards in coming forwards from their full back position. Tilly, Kitty and Tarlia were very effective in midfield and showed a confidence in possession. Eleanor lead the line alongside Bonnie and showed an understanding of how to use her pace in the wide channels. Both sides had chances at either end with Lucy looking very composed and the Fairlands goalkeeper appearing a little nervous early on. Captain Ruby capitalised on this and sent a powerful shot into the corner for the opening score. Fairlands hit back with an equaliser after a bit of defensive confusion from Hugh Sexey. The excellent Evie was a rock at the back and a number of her long searching balls into the final third could of resulted in more goals. Eventually Evie took matters into her own hands and powered forward from centre back before placing the goal past their keeper. Again Fairlands found a way back into it with two of their players starting to grow into the game. At half time the talk was about having the confidence to shoot more when in sight of goal. We also talked about applying more pressure on their creative midfield player. The second half started brightly with Abbie showing amazing skills to dribble into the box. She struck the ball beautifully, but it just sailed over. Hugh Sexey continued to press but the Fairlands keeper was a player transformed in the second half and Hugh Sexey just couldn't find a way past her. The tactic of marking Fairlands player closely seemed to work as Hugh Sexey continued to press for a goal to take them into the lead. However sometimes tactics can backfire, and this was what happened in the final 10 minutes. Sensing a challenge had been put her way the Fairlands player adapted her game and found a way to get beyond the strategy resulting in a quick hattrick to take the score to 3-2. There was more drama as Fairlands were awarded a penalty. Gabby did brilliantly to save it but Fairlands were first to react and tucked in the rebound to make it 4-2. The girls should be proud of their efforts and performance. However, If more were prepared to brave the elements and attend training with Mr Kemsley and Mr Banwell I have no doubt that games like this would finish differently.

  • UKRAINE DAY

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mrs Kemp

    UKRAINE DAY

Pupils were given the opportunity to wear blue and yellow in school on Friday to show their support for the devastating situation in the Ukraine. Thank you all very much for supporting this special MUFTI day. We have now raised almost £1,800 which we will send to the British Red Cross Ukraine appeal, to help the most vulnerable families and children who are being displaced from their homes and country during this dreadful atrocity.

  • Year 5 Dance

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mrs Allen

Year 5 have been working hard on their space dances. Miss Keep has introduced the idea of the Rover being sent to Mars to investigate the planet . This has cross curricular links to science.

I was overwhelmed with the attention to costume that some of our pupils had worked on. They were performing to the theme tune of Thunderbirds. All received  very well deserved house points for their choreography and ideas.

    Very inspiring.

  • First School Cross Country at HSMS

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mrs Allen
It was so lovely to welcome some of our first schools for the cross-country meeting held at school on Thursday 10th March.
Mr Jackson's cross-country team , with some of our year eight sports leaders , were very helpful in the running of the event.
Representatives from Wedmore, Weare, Lympsham , East Brent and Axbridge first schools were present.
Some of the Hugh Sexey team were hares and guided the younger children through the course.
The year threes set off in the first race and completed a full lap of the school field . Each of the runners gave their very best and all finished successfully .
The year fours then completed two laps of the field and the fitness levels were very impressive.
After some quick calculations from Mr Jackson, medals were awarded for first , second and third place in each year group - separate medals for boys and girls.
We also awarded a cup to the winning school overall which this year went to Wedmore .
A lovely, positive event with great support from our first school families . This comment was gratefully received from a first school colleague .
"Thank you for organising the x-country. What a lovely event!😍"
Well done to all participants and helpers .

  • History Club Storms Keep!

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mr Mallett

Over the past few weeks KS3 History Club have been exploring castles. They have investigated how castles change over time from wooden motte and bailey castles to stone keeps and concentric castles. History club was also tasked with analysing the strengths and weaknesses of each type of castle design as well as exploring the medieval weaponry used to attack them.  This resulted in members of KS3 History Club building their own catapults and attacking the stone keep!

  • Book Fair raises over £900

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mrs Dourlay

We were thrilled to host another Hugh Sexey Book Fair this week to coincide with World Book Day.  Pupils and staff from all year groups and classes were able to visit the fair in their guided reading lessons, as well as during break and lunch times.  Popular titles this time were:  Hidden Gems, a wonderful box book which included information about precious stones as well as including 4 actual stones; Sabotage on the Solar Express by M. G. Leonard, an intriguing mystery about a runaway train in the Australian Outback and F2 Ultimate Footballer, a wonderful non-fiction book filled with up to date information about players and the game.

Overall we raised a total of £928.89 which will allow the school to purchase many new books as part of the rewards system we have with Travelling Books, the company who provide the book fair.  Huge thanks to all the parents, pupils and staff who supported the fair this year.  It makes a big difference to the resources in the library.

  • World Book Day @ HSMS

    Wed 09 Mar 2022 Mrs D'Auria

We enjoyed a number of activities to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March and there was a real buzz about the school.  Many members of staff said it was their best WBD yet!  Pupils made a fantastic effort dressing up, as did many of the staff, and pupils enjoyed a range of creative activities in their celebrations:

    • A library book quiz
    • MC Grammar rap quiz - this was an inter-tutor group competition, which really enthused the pupils - we could hear them repeating lines of the rap about the school
    • Designing a three-course menu for a favourite superhero or villain - we have seen some fine examples of delicious and disgusting menus
    • Designing a book cover with a difference: by putting themselves in the cover design - so far, we have seen some brilliant covers
    • Designing book bunting - pupils got really creative with this!
    • Designing a book token for next year's National Book Token - so far, we have had some super designs - fingers crossed we win some of the prizes!
    • Some pupils in KS2 did a book swap and KS3 pupils were invited to donate books to the library.
Congratulations to our overall book day costume winners: Harrison (Yr5),

  • Year 8 football vs Millfield

Mon 07 Mar 2022 Mr Kemsley

    Match Report Millfield 1st March

On the 1st of March Hugh Sexeys Year 8s welcomed Millfield to play in a 7 aside match. The two teams had already played this season but this game was on a smaller pitch meaning the team had to adapt their playing style. The team started strongly playing some unbelievable football out from the back and through all three thirds of the pitch and were rewarded with a goal when the ball fell to Alfie and he rifled the ball into the back of the net. Huge credit to our defenders Harry and Harry who continued to show great composure when receiving the ball under pressure to allow the team to play out from the back. Millfield were fast to react after conceding and equalised after a fine move fell to their striker and his shot deflected into the goal. But on the stroke of half time Dillon picked up the ball showed fantastic skill to beat a couple of defenders and put a great cross into the box where Declan was able to finish. The team went into the half 2-1 up. Striker Archie came onto the pitch at half time and made an immediate impact when after a fine save by Millfields keeper he was able to pounce on the rebound and extend the teams lead to 2. Millfield then began to put pressure on the team and forced goalkeeper Josh into a number of fine stops, eventually Millfield got their reward and scored to set up a thrilling ending to the game. In the final minute Hugh Sexeys continued to attack and Charlie produced some brilliant skill and smashed the ball against the crossbar the ball then fell to captain Jack who took a great touch to set himself and thundered the ball into to top corner to confirm the win for Hugh Sexey. A massive credit to both teams who put on a really high quality game of football which could have gone either way.

  • Year 8 netball vs Wells Blue

Thu 03 Mar 2022 Mrs Allen

Match Report Hugh Sexey year eight versus Wells Blue at home.

    Tuesday 1st March

The year eight girls are working very hard on their netball and this was an opportunity for some of our girls to represent their school for the first time.

Wells only brought one team so we played a triangular fixture, which meant more of our pupils were able to play.

The rain just about kept away so we were able to play a decent match of 40 minutes.

The B team started and although a little apprehensive they soon got into their stride.

There was some excellent midfield play, even though the WA from Wells was a tall strong player. Isla was tenacious as GD and was awarded player of the match by the opposition.

The A team then caught up. Olivia , as GS , was able to shoot well and caught up from 5-0 to 5-4. Taylor was fast as Centre and the support from the onlookers was most encouraging , despite the cold conditions.

After a very close fourth quarter, the final score was 10-9 to Wells Blue.

Well done. This was a very enjoyable and positive experience for all of the year eight players.
