  • Save Somerset

Tue 14 Jan 2020 Mrs Bury

Ben (8KS) has continued to raise awareness of his and his friends' 'Save Somerset' campaign by releasing a video on youtube  which powerfully highlights the frightening impact of plastic pollution.

Ben, with school friends Kayden and Will, launched the campaign called ‘Save Somerset’ last year to help clean up Burnham and raise awareness of the dangers of plastic pollution.

Ben put together the new promotional video in preparation for more clean up sessions, not only on the beach but in parks around local towns. When interviewed by Burnham-On-Sea.com, Ben said he compiled the video to raise awareness of the amount of plastics in our oceans and highlight this world wide emergency, as well as making more people aware of what we are doing to the environment. Ben hopes the video will encourage others to join them on their next clean up session.

All tutor groups will have a chance to see Ben's video, to encourage more students to join in and help with the clean-ups.

  • Year 8 Hockey Tournament

Tue 14 Jan 2020 Mrs Farley

The Year 8 hockey team recently qualified for the Somerset School Games Hockey final tournament, which took place at Millfield school.

The team played 6 qualifying games in the tournament against The Blue School, The Castle, Danesfield, Haygrove, Chiltern Trinity and Holyrood. The team started strongly in their first game, playing in steady rain.  An early goal from Jemima settled the team into their game; a further quick goal followed after some lovely interplay including Charli and Sophie.

The players quickly got into their stride in the second and third matches, scoring 5 goals in each game.  Jemima got her name on the score sheet again, together with Charli and Sophie.  Some great work in defence by Scarlett (in goal) alongside Chloe and Freya meant the opposition were unable to score.

With 3 matches remaining the whole squad still had plenty of time left to play. Roxie made some excellent tackles to keep the opposition at bay and Tash, Beau and Jess played some great hockey, to the frustration of the opposition.  The Year 8 girls remained unbeaten until playing their last group game, loosing in a closely fought match.

The squad then played against the Blue School in a 2nd vs 4th place play off.  Sophie found the back of the goal to give Hugh Sexeys the win to make the final.

In the final, despite playing some lovely hockey, they were outplayed by the opposition.  However the girls were Somerset School Games Runners Up for 2019 - a fantastic result against some much larger schools.

    Well done girls!
