Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Congratulations to Oscar, 7GDA, who has been selected for North Somerset JPL’s elite U13s squad for next season; he has already started pre-season training.
In addition Oscar’s North Somerset U12 Blacks football team won the Under 12 National Junior Premier League Championship Final this month, with a 6-2 victory over Nottingham in the final at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre.
Well done Oscar.
There were only 10 points separating 1st place and 4th in the year 6 Sports day. Saxons were crowned the champions, with Normans, Vikings and Celts completing the order. It was a great spectacle, with some wonderful races, feats of endeavour and beautiful examples of sporting ethics and values. The parents brought a real atmosphere to the events too, and I am sure it inspired the students further.
Max had a day to remember breaking Steven Jones' 80m record from 2015 with a time of 10.54. He had previously run 12.01 in his heat. Alice Steakler was also close to a record in the girls 80m race. Max was also desperately close to breaking a record in the long jump with a distance of 4.10. Ethan, James and Tom also did very well in that event. Finley also had a cracking games. He won the 1500m on the Monday, and took part in a thrilling 800m final. He held off the threat from Nathan all the way around, with just 5 seconds between them. Oliver did very well to get 3rd place, closely followed by Dennis, Kieron, Danny, George and George.
The girls 800m race was another great event. Amelie went off at a blistering pace and forced the other girls to stay with her. I felt that it was far too fast, but was proved wrong. As some of the girls inevitably fatigued on the second lap, Chloe and Cery's stayed with Amelie to battle it out for 2nd and 3rd places. Amelie emerged victorious for the Normans but the other girls did very well to stay in the race.
The girls high jump was far closer than any could have imagined. Olivia shocking all the athletes with a wonderful technical performance. Her battle with Alice was a joy to watch, and it was lovely to see the girls giving their best but encouraging and celebrating the others success.
The inclusive events proved to be popular and it was a delight to see Zoey, Evan, Poppy and Rhys doing so well in the optional fun run.
The students should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves, and I hope they enjoyed the events as much as the staff enjoyed watching them.
Congratulations to Megan Rees (8RT) and Innes Oliver (7IA)
who have both been awarded distinction for the design they produced for the Secondary Engineer Leaders Award. Their work will be placed on display at the University of the West of England on Saturday 30th June 2018. This will be a public exhibition so if you would like to attend please click on the link below.
Many Congratulations to the Vikings, who emerged victorious in the year 5 sports day with 133 points. The Saxons took 2nd with 130. With Celts in 3rd (117) and Normans in 4th (116).
The results were secondary to what was a truly lovely day of participation and camaraderie. The weather was very kind, and the enthusiasm of the crowd and the students set the tone for a great morning. The events kicked off yesterday with many
Harry had a day to remember on the track and in the field events, winning the 80m sprint and the long jump. The girls 80m final was an electric event with little between Amelie, Anna, Emily and Sophia in the first 4 places. In the welly wang Jack threw a welly whopping 17.90 to almost eclipse a long standing school record. In was a similar scenario in the girls event with Maddie, Ruby, Devon and Amelia all scoring well. Hattie and Ada tied in the girls high jump event with both girls jumping 95cm. Katie scored well in the rounders ball throw with a distance of 28 meters. Another notable mention was Finley in the cricket ball throw, with a superb distance of 34 meters. Still some way behind England Cricket star Jos Butler's record of 48.49, but worthy of first place. Special mention should also go to Charlie, Oli, Lewis, Toby and Michal who contributed fully and diligently with the distance events.
The day culminated with a fun run and it was pleasing to see so many of the students play a part.
Congratulations to all involved and many thanks to staff and the sports leaders for the help throughout.
In March the more able pupils in Year 7 DT participated in the South West Secondary Engineer Leaders Award. Pupils were asked to interpret the question - If you were an engineer - what would you do?' I am delighted to say that Philippa Griffiths (7AMW) has won the Year 7 category. She will be presented with a trophy at a private awards ceremony and her design - Red Line Breaking System - will be put on display at a public exhibition in UWE Bristol Exhibition and Conference Centre on Saturday 30th June. This exhibition is being sponsored by the Ministry of Defence DE&S.
I am so proud of Philippa's fantastic achievement as her design shows great innovation. This is the first time Hugh Sexey have entered a nationally recognised STEM competition.
Our Year 7s and Year 8s had the exciting opportunity to visit Twickenham to watch the Premiership Final between Exeter Chiefs and Saracens. After a good coach journey we arrived at Twickenham - we were very lucky to be in the West stand and had great seats.
The weather was lovely and hot and all the pupils had a fantastic day, watching a very strong Saracens side winning the game 27-10.
Some of our pupils were lucky enough to meet the England Head Coach, Eddie Jones, and to have a photo taken with him.
Many thanks to the staff: Mr Jackson, Mrs Callow, Miss Crossland, and Mrs Palmer for giving up their Saturday to accompany the pupils on the trip.
