  • Harvest Collection for Cheddar Food Bank

Mon 15 Oct 2018 Mrs Le Hunte
Our whole school Harvest collection, which was held last week, was extremely successful. Each year group collected a huge array of tinned and long-life food products, together with a range of toiletries, which the year 8 House Captains and friends sorted and boxed up in their free time. Your contributions will be making their way to the Cheddar Foodbank.
Thank you so much for all of your generous donations.
  • Girls' Hockey

Thu 11 Oct 2018 Mrs Allen
    Year seven hockey
The year sevens have been attending hockey club on a Wednesday.
Their first match was held at Wells  Blue on Thursday 4th October.  The A team , captained by Hannah Marsh got off to a very encouraging start. Beau Stitch and Sophie Boley scored two goals and this gave the team confidence. Freya Wills was encouraging and supportive of her team mates. In the second half , Wells Blue scored a goal which was the only goal to get past Goalkeeper Winnie White. The final score was 5-1 to Hugh Sexey.
The B team finished their first half 2-0 down. However they soon recovered well after a debut performance from Jemima Seagrove who proved to be a very solid sweeper. I was impressed with the way in which this team never gave up.  The girls managed to score three goals and finally won a close match 3-2 .

    Year eight Hockey
The year eights have been training hard on a Wednesday. The new MUGA has been great and the girls have enjoyed the new surface. Their first match as an eleven a side team was held at home versus Well Blue. The girls played very well and won their first match with skill and experience. This was their first eleven a side match and all seemed to enjoy this larger game. Lucy Olliff and Amy Carter pushed forward and scored 2  confident goals .
    Final Score 5-0

    KS 2 hockey
The girls at key stage two enjoyed an evening of hockey on Monday October 1st. Mrs. Callow has been training a very enthusiastic group of year five girls on a Wednesday and they displayed amazing skills as they played their first matches against year six.
The year six girls enjoyed playing seven a side and went onto win the intra school competition.

A truly encouraging start to the new season. Well done to all hockey players...
  • Mendip Junior Cross Country League - Race One

Thu 11 Oct 2018 Mr Jackson

The first race of the junior cross country league took place at Millfield Prep School with 11 runners from Years 5 and 6 representing Hugh Sexey.

Over 400 runners from over 20 schools took part in the event.  With conditions fair and the ground firm and holey in places, our runners gave their all; albeit some finding the holes en route.

The girls team of Matilda, Izzy, Emilia, Sofia and Ruby are currently placed a credible 5th out of 21 teams.  Ruby, on her debut for the team, achieved an excellent 15th place.

The boys team of Oscar, Zach, Fynn, Lewis, Charley and Charlie look set for another battle with Millfield over the season.  Having won the league last season, our boys team are currently second to Millfield.  The team performance was very much aided by three runners in the top 20; Lewis 18th, Fynn 10th and Charlie 6th.

  • ESFA U11s GIRLS' FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT @ STRODE COLLEGE

Mon 08 Oct 2018 Mr Waterfield

Due to the great success we had last year, with our U11 girls' football team reaching the National Finals at Ricoh Stadium Coventry FC, we decided to enter a new team for this year's Mendip Tournament at Strode College, playing against local schools.

It was great to see some of our new Year 5s in action - they have settled in so well.

The girls played superbly and won the tournament - they are now through to the County Finals on January 11th.

HSMS played 6 games: we won 5 and drew 1.  It was great to see lots of girls scoring goals too!

Well done to all those involved.  It was very pleasing to see how quickly the girls had gelled as a team; they put in some great performances on the pitch.

    Mr Waterfield

Squad - Maddy Rousell, Ella Saxon (Captain) Indah Kayira, Anika Badhen, Abbie Badhen, Ella Holmes, Katie Holmes, Daisy Comerford, Evie Williams, Lucy Taylor, Ruby Tipper.

  • Alex - fastest swimmer in the county.

Thu 04 Oct 2018 Ms Bury

Alex, 8AMW, is an exceptional swimmer; he trains and swims with the Academy Swim Team at Burnham and competes in front crawl, breaststroke and butterfly.   At the weekend Alex swam in the County Development Competition held at Millfield and won 6 out of his 7  races .  Alex was competing against other 12 year olds in the county and was the fastest county swimmer.

Fantastic swimming Alex, we are very proud of you.

  • Yr 7 Rugby vs Crispin

Wed 03 Oct 2018 Mr McGrath
The year 7 rugby team put in a strong showing against a large and powerful Crispin side. Ultimately Hugh Sexey had too much game experience and were able to outwit and overpower Crispin in most areas. George and Ollie were very dominant in the tackle and able to win a lot of ball before the ruck was fully formed. They also showed excellent quality in attack, both in decision making and ball carrying ability.  In the first half Hugh Sexey showed some excellent attacking shape with Luke frequently charging into open space and Will, Dennis and Kieron looking to move the ball wide into threatening areas. Some of the tries were very well worked with Crispin simply running out of numbers. Excellent forward play from Hugo and Ethan ensured that we had a steady stream of the ball. Aggressive running ensured that we continued to move forward and provide front foot ball.
Crispin arrived a little under strength so we lent them a number of our players to make up the numbers. It was really pleasing to see these players helping their new team mates and enjoying the challenge of playing against their friends.
As the game wore on Crispin grew into the contest getting a few late scores.
Overall it was a pleasing showing but I am sure greater challenges will appear later in the year.
Many thanks to Crispin for a good spirited game.
  • Yr 8 Rugby vs Millfield

Wed 03 Oct 2018 Mr McGrath
The year 8 rugby team put in a commanding performance against Millfield prep school. With a number of boys attending training and working hard in lessons, competition for places was high. Hugh Sexey were able to pick a powerful side with dominant ball carriers in the pack and three quarters. This was coupled with good decision makers across the park and players happy to do the hard, often unseen work off the ball. Joel, Kenny, Ben and Luc had stand out games. The hard work and crisp execution of the other players allowed these boys to get on the front foot and run in a number of impressive tries. Jacob, George, Henry and Louis also had good games in the backs. Often having to take the ball into traffic but always recycling quickly to allow the game to flow from phase to phase. The half back pairing of Will and Ollie impressed throughout. Ollie arranged his carriers very well and constantly helped put Hugh Sexey in good attacking positions. Will played very flat to the gain line and showed a good ability to play the ball late to the players running into space. As Millfield grew into the game, Hugh Sexey had to work harder to get scores and it was pleasing to see forwards and backs linking well across the park. This was supported by the excellent work of Kyle, Henry and Charlie throughout. These players were always on hand to clear ruck, make tackles and take the ball forward. You can not over emphasise the value that gives to a rugby team. Overall it was a very encouraging first performance and the boys should be very proud.
Thanks to the Millfield players, coaches and parents for a great game.

Tue 02 Oct 2018 Mr McGrath

  • Player of the Match

Tue 02 Oct 2018 Mr McGrath
Many congratulations to Jagger in year 6. He was named Player of the match in his football fixture for Ashcott against Minehead. Jagger put in a tireless and all action display. Jagger has worked hard at his game and is becoming a far better team player.
