  • Marvellous Masks

Tue 12 Mar 2019 Mrs Adair
The new Council of All Beings display has now been put up. Every year i am overwhelmed by the quality of the masks and the effort the children put into their speeches. Sadly there is not room for all the wonderful masks on the display board, so if your mask has not gone up, please see Mrs Bury in her office to collect your mask.  Im sure they wil be treasured by parents and carers. Thank you Year 7 for another year of truly inspiring project work
  • Year 7 House Matches - Football

Fri 08 Mar 2019 Mr McGrath

The year 7 House Matches brought down the curtain on what has been a very pleasing week of events. With still and calm weather the scene was set for a fun afternoon and the players did not disappoint. There was a lovely feeling in the air with almost the whole year in PE kit and lots of flags and banners to support the teams. All of the matches were played in an excellent spirit. It is great to see the boys take the event so seriously but at the same time they all adhere to the correct ethics and values of sport. The year 8 sport leaders of Oscar and Luc made a great contribution and leant their wisdom to the younger players.

The participation trophy went to the Normans but in fairness they were one of only 2 houses who had enough players to fulfil the games. In the spirit of the game Houses leant players to fulfil fixtures and this provided extra opportunities for game play. Will had a tournament to remember scoring 3 goals all taken with clinical aplomb. For his last he showed remarkable pace to stride through and slot into the bottom corner. Joshua had a fine afternoon and racked up a number of games. He combined physicality with excellent sportsmanship throughout the afternoon. I was also very proud of Morgan who has come on leaps and bounds this term and really showed a change in his attitude and application. Other notable performance were Fin, Daniel, Thomas and Oli to name a few. All of the players deserve immense credit for the way they have improved this term and it is delightful to see them all enjoying the game.

In the elite competition the Vikings were crowned champs with 3 wins from 3. Kayden and Jamie were both impressive in-between the sticks but the strength of the Vikings meant that their keeper, Thomas was only required to make a handful of saves. Dennis, Ellis and Will all had good games whilst the Spinks twins showed they could combine soft touches with their brawn to make telling contributions. Louis and George continue to progress as players and Riley, Oli and Issac were rocks at the heart of their teams defensive hub.

    Well done to all involved.

Autumn, 6ILH, has returned from the Highbridge festival with 2 gold medals for Tap and Modern, both age 9-10. She also entered the Song and Dance category, which she sang with “a lot of emotion” and had “good lift and freedom” in her dance.

    Well done Autumn.

  • World Book Day: characters, competitions and a book fair.

Fri 08 Mar 2019 Mrs Palmer
World Book Day has been a great success. Many children and staff joined in and dressed up as a book character.  There were some fantastic entries but the winner of the £5 book voucher to spend at the book fair is Coden year 6FL, who dressed as Gansta Granny.  (see pictures)

The library has been running various competitions throughout the week and the winner of the 'Design a book cover' competition is
    1st place Yasmin Reeson 5OM
2nd place Ella Roberts 5OM both winning a £5 Book voucher to spend at the book fair
and joint runners up worthy of a mention are Bea St John Webster 6FL and Heidi Wall 5GB
(There are pictures of the entries and the winners.  I will try and send an individual picture of the winning design).

The book fair has arrived and as always the children are enthusiastic. They have been creating wish lists and I am sure they will be presented to parents at some point.  The book fair is in school until next Wednesday (13th March). (Picture of the book trolleys set up)

A huge thank you to the KS3 students who have donated a book, they no longer want, from home.  There are some super donations which will be making their way onto the shelves over the next few days.
  • Year 8 House Netball

Fri 08 Mar 2019 Mrs Allen
    Thursday March 7th
This was a very skillful tournament, the girls have worked hard on their netball skills throughout their time at school. This was reflected in the high standard of play. It was quite inspiring to watch at times. The weather  did not help the flow of the games but the teams still managed to shoot accurately .
Thank you to Elle Burrows, who has been on work experience with us this week.
    The final score was
    Joint 3rd Celts and Saxons
    2nd Normans
    1s Vikings.
Polly Fowler -club player of the tournament .
Elle-Marie Attwell -  player of the tournament
Evie Martin  - umpire of the tournament .
    Well done to all girls.

  • Year 5 House Netball

Fri 08 Mar 2019 Mrs Allen
It was a very exciting afternoon of netball. The year fives are very enthusiastic and this was reflected in the competition. Due to the large number of girls, each house was able to host three teams. With the excellent support of year eight team players, Mary, Millie and Ella the teams showed skill and knowledge in a closely fought tournament . Every girl played and contributed. The cheerleading was loud and fun.
Special mention to Evie Williams who received player of the season due to her commitment and skill. She supported her teams to the very end and gave the less experienced players helpful tips.
    The final score was
    Joint 3rd Normans and Celts
    2nd Vikings
    Winners Saxons.
    Well done to all.
  • Mendip Junior Cross Country League - Race 4

Thu 07 Mar 2019 Mr Jackson

Twelve runners represented Hugh Sexey in the latest race of the Mendip Junior Cross Country League for Years 5 and 6.  The venue was a wet Tor Leisure in Glastonbury.

There were excellent top 10 finishes from Charlie, Fynn and Ruby.

Lewis also put in his strongest performance yet and Emmie had a great debut too; both finishing in the top 20 in their races.

The girls team came 4th out of 20 schools in this race; their best placing of the season so far.

The boys team came 2nd out of 20 schools and are still in with a shout for the best team of the season but will be need to be 1st in the final race later this month.

  • Year 8 House Football

Thu 07 Mar 2019 Mr McGrath

The year 8 house football matches were a wonderful celebration of the hard work and commitment the boys have shown this year and beyond. In one competition the final place went to the team with the most goals scored. The Saxons and Viking both got equal points but in the end the Saxons nicked it on goal difference. Not surprising when you consider it was a side containing the attacking threats of Crook, Griffiths, Callow and Williams. Mr Waterfield was thrilled with the spirit and camaraderie shown by the players and it is pleasing to see them understanding the core values of sport.

The Celts emerged as the winners of the participation competition. It was great to see players helping other houses out with numbers and lovely to see the likes of Duggan, McPherson and Dyte score well taken goals. Star turn of the day was Davies, who in reflection probably should have played up a level.

It has been a very pleasing term with excellent achievement across the board. It is a very talented year group but most pleasing to me is that every boy feels valued and appears to enjoy participating in competitive sport.

  • World Book Week Celebrations

    Thu 07 Mar 2019 Miss D'Auria
As part of our World Book Week celebrations, Jenny Leggott, a self-published author, visited a group of Year 5 & 7 pupils to talk about her Sammy Rambles books.  She also delivered a writing workshop on developing characters.  Pupils even got to play a bit of Dragonball, a sport that features in her stories.  Jenny was really impressed with our pupils' creative flair and the quality of their writing.
