  • Football - out in the cold.

Mon 09 Mar 2020 Mr McGrath
    Out in the cold

The year 8 football team came unstuck at home against a very powerful Fairlands side on a bitterly cold afternoon. Hugh Sexey started the game brightly but were unable to get in behind the Fairlands defence. With Ellis absent through injury and other players unavailable they found in difficult to threaten in attacking areas. Fairlands had a very technically adept midfield coupled with great size and strength and at times Hugh Sexey couldn't hold onto possession. Will understood the importance of moving the ball away from them quickly but sadly not enough players made themselves available for the next pass. The first half finished 3 - 0 to Fairlands with one goal a 30 yard screamer. The fact that the midfielder apologised as soon as he hit it suggests it was not intended, but when the heavy wind caught it the ball nearly broke the netting. At half time some of the players dropped their heads but Hugo, Maddie, Ollie and Alex helped galvanise the troops and they went into the second half much brighter. Hugh Sexey had a bit more snap going for the lose ball and started to play with a bit more savvy by playing passes quickly and then moving beyond the hulking presences in midfield and defence. In the early exchanges they had good opportunities to score but good defending plus a little hesitancy meant nothing came of it. Fairlands continued to threaten as Hugh Sexey poured forward but a lack of composure and some excellent/unorthodox work by Kayden in the sticks meant they were unable to add to their goals. It was a much brighter second half and the players should take some pride from their doggedness. They must learn though that in order to keep the ball players have to make themselves available to receive it. Player of the match was Ollie for a typically combative and energetic performance at left back. If every player played with his courage, spirit and velocity the game would have been closer. All of those traits are achievable and desirable in athletes and require nothing more than a positive mind-set.

    2-2 thriller at Hugh Sexey

Wells Blue arrived at Hugh Sexey to play a year 7 game that was very close to being cancelled due to the heavy rain that descended upon the South West. Thankfully a suitable playing surface was found and all of the players did their best to challenge the elements and play some attractive football. Wells Blue started really well. They were able to work the ball through the usually dominate midfield and create good opportunities. Only desperate defending stopped them from getting an early lead. The feeling was that things would quickly come together and that Hugh Sexey would start to get a foothold as they appeared to have the monopoly on skilful players. However the sticky surface coupled with the fact that Wells were an incredibly well drilled and spirited side meant that this never came to fruition. Eventually their persistence paid off and they bundled the ball into the Hugh Sexey net for a goal. At half time Ollie demanded more from the players and instructed the players to be more hungry for the ball and to use it more wisely. This seemed to do the trick as the players came out with more intent and purpose. Noah then scored a typical poachers goal before Wells grabbed another against the run of play. Hugh Sexey kept going and Ollie scored an equaliser after a sweeping move allowed Noah to turn provider. Hugh Sexey then pushed and pushed for the winner with a tight call on a penalty being turned down by VAR. In the end they could have pinched a victory but a draw was a fair reflection of a well contested and entertaining game.
  • Mendip Netball Competition - Year 8

Mon 09 Mar 2020 Mrs Allen
    Netball report
Year eight annual Mendip  netball competition at Fairlands
The team comprised of ten girls who have been selected to play for the cup team after club and match performance.
The weather was against us and conditions were cold and wet. Despite this, the girls played  extremely good netball.
Captained by a very dedicated goal attack, Freya, the girls played Selwood in their first match. It was close and final score was 1-1.
The team played five other teams and in all matches except our last against Oakfield school , the score was very close. Alex T was strong in defence and both Olivia F and Olivia G were very agile in the centre position. As the tournament drew to its end, the girls played a very strong team from Oakfield who won 5-1 .
The girls came fourth overall after point tallies. Selwood came third as the number of goals scored was higher. The two schools to go through were Wells Blue and Oakfield.
    Well done to all players.

  • Yr 7 Netball - friendly vs Wells Blue

Mon 09 Mar 2020 Mrs Allen

Year seven friendly against Wells Blue.

A brighter day and a keen squad. For many girls in this team it was their first experience of playing for the school. I was impressed with their independent warm up and focused approach.
Wells Blue arrived and the matches began - four quarters of eight minutes.
I was umpiring the B team in the first half. Captained by Beatrice, the team looked as if they had been together for a long time. Footwork was excellent and some accurate shooting from Ellie May and Beatrice meant the girls took an early 3-0 lead.  The final score was 9-2 to Hugh Sexey. It was great to see Riley defend with such determination.
I umpired the A team in the second half. Again , some skilful play. The shooter from Wells was accurate but captain Jez and GK , Ruby prevented too many goals. Grace W and Grace E played well together as GS and GA . Daisy was making her debut performance as WD .
The final score was 6-5 to Wells Blue.
A very enjoyable afternoon of netball with all matches being  played with great team spirit.

  • Year 8 Netball - HSMS vs Wells Blue

Tue 03 Mar 2020 Mrs Allen
    Match Report
    Thursday 27th February.
    8A / 8B teams v Wells Blue ( away)

The teams travelled by coach to Wells Blue. It was a glorious sunny day and this was our first match.
8A  This was a very closely fought match between the two schools. The matches were four quarters of ten minutes duration. After the first quarter the team seemed a bit deflated as they were trailing behind 6- 3
After a successful switch of Charli and Gaby playing WA and WD the girls played some fine netball to equalise at the end of the second quarter. The third and fourth quarter were really close . The shooter from Wells was very accurate but defenders, Gemma and Alice prevented her from gaining possession too often. Our shooters improved as the match progressed, Captain Freya displaying her experience in moving around the court and Bryher  applied what she had learnt in the previous night training coming to collect the ball from behind a strong  GK.
The penultimate minute saw Freya shoot a successful shot to win the match 15-14.
Final Score Hugh Sexey 15 Wells Blue 14
    8B
This was a most enjoyable match, the first match for two of our players, Robyn and Jasmine. The team captained by Lydia were supportive and encouraging throughout. The first quarter saw one goal from Winnie and on reflection the team decided to place Ava as GA. This proved a successful move as the Hugh Sexey team ploughed into the lead with some very accurate shooting. A real team effort. Jasmine kept the match calm and Asha defended well as GK.
Final Score Hugh Sexey 16 Wells Blue 1
Well done to all players - most enjoyable.
