    Monday 13th March

    Year five festival.

The sports leaders ran a very successful netball and football festival. The pupils chose which sport they wished to particpate in. The leaders acted as coaches and umpires. Some of our leaders worked out the admin and timekeeping .

    A thoroughly enjoyable event.

  • Success at Highbridge Festival of Arts

Mon 20 Mar 2023 Mrs Harrison

    Festival success

Both our Vocal 'Sing the Musicals' and Recorder group entered the 'Highbridge Festival of the Arts' virtually on Thursday 16th March. Unfortunately we were unable to attend in person so our pupils showcased their talents by submitting a video of their achievements.

The adjudicator reported back to us that this was a very ambitious medley which involved a considerable amount of memory and quick reactions between each of the 20 familiar musicals. The performance was entertaining and pupils were clearly committed. The Recorder group played with energy and enjoyment.

  • Kings Academy Football Tournament

Thu 09 Mar 2023 Mr Banwell

On the 7th of March, we travelled to Kings Academy to part take in a tournament run by 3 boys from Year 13; they made sure it was a fulfilling day. We were lucky enough to be able to take 2 teams of year 8 boys, all ready for action. Fairlands did the same.

As the first round of games commenced, it was looking bright for both of our teams. George, Will and Dillan on team 1 showed great dribbling skills and a determination to push their team to victory in their first game. Over on the second pitch team 2 were also playing well: Nick, Sam and Louis contributed goals towards their team's first win of the day.

When the second round started team 1 carried on their winning streak with another dominant performance, scoring a magnificent 9 goals! Overall it was a fantastic team display, with great distribution and all-around awareness, starting with the goalkeeper Freddie.

Team 2 also put on another breath-taking display, with star performances from Cameron, Leo and Harry. These 3 showed great desire and guided their team to victory.

The last game was between between Hugh Sexey's teams 1 and 2 to decide the overall winner for the day. It was an end-to-end game which was battled out right to the final whistle. George scoring 4 goals and Austin getting 2 were the star performers. Team 2 put up a great fight but unfortunately missed out narrowly; the final score was 4-1 to Team 1.

Overall it was a great day of football and all of the boys felt as if they'de done themselves proud. Thank you to Kings Academy for allowing us to have such fun.

  • Year 7 Netball -HSMS vs Wells Blue

Wed 08 Mar 2023 Mrs Allen

Hugh Sexey v Wells Blue (away) year 7 A and B

The year seven girls are a committed group of girls who train seriously every Monday. It was good to see them approach the match with a real sense of purpose.

The B team played extremely well and I was impressed with the standard of play.

Some excellent shooting from Olivia and Sophia and centre court excellence from Lily . They scored 15 nets and eventually won their match 15-5

The A team captained by Eliza , also played very well. They showed great interceptional skills and prevented the opposition from having too much possession . This was particularly evident from the GD Mimi .

Their final score was 11-1 to Hugh Sexey.

Player of the B match Olivia

Player of the A match was Mimi

Well done . It was a pleasure to accompany the girls who clearly enjoyed the whole experience .

  • Year 5 House Netball Matches

Fri 03 Mar 2023 Mrs Allen

The year five girls have made excellent progress in netball and their skills and understanding of the sport are very promising.

It was a chilly but dry morning. The house squads were divided into an A and B team . There was a separate competition for each team,  but the cup went to the winning house overall. Thank you to the year eight sports leaders who helped run a smooth competition : Megan , Emilia, Iris and Tilly G.

I was impressed with the standard of play. Netball can be quite a complicated sport to learn , because each position is only allowed in certain areas of the court. However, the year fives all appeared to have learnt who could travel where and who was allowed to shoot. Footwork, however, needs a little attention !

There were some excellent interceptions and passing.

Girls who were not playing became very encouraging cheer leaders.

These are the final results .

    A competition

    1st Normans

    2nd Vikings

    3rd Saxons

    4th Celts

    B competition

    1st Normans

    2nd Saxons

    3rd Vikings

    4th Celts

    Overall competition

    1st Normans

    2nd Vikings

    3rd Saxons

    4th Celts

  • Year 5 House Football Competition

Fri 03 Mar 2023 Mr McGrath

    Year 5

The Year 5 House Football competition will go in Hugh Sexey history as a classic. It had drama, passion and lots of goals. It was the year 5s first House competition and they were a credit to themselves, their Houses and the School. I was delighted to see all of the year group play an active part in the games. The Challenge competition was full of excitement. Celts were the winners with 2 wins and a draw. Thomas, Parker and Finley were outstanding throughout the competition and have grown in confidence this term. Morton played brilliantly for the Celts and he was instrumental in their success. Harry of the Celts was a real poacher in front of goal, scoring 5 goals to be the top scorer in the Challenge Cup. Harry of the Vikings was player of the tournament and he showed strength , speed and skill in all 3 games. The final game between Celts and Saxons was a brilliant spectacle. The game finished 3-2 to the Celts. Marley grabbing 2 for Saxons who nearly clinched a draw at the end. Vikings finished 2nd in the Challenge Cup with Normans 3rd.

The Premier Competition had some high scoring games with Saxons winning 7-1 and Vikings winning 6 – 0. In the end the Competition went to goal difference with Saxons getting 1st place, Celts 2nd and Vikings 3rd. Josh of the Vikings was player of the day. He showed excellent close control and scored a number of crucial goals. Dan, Will, Joe and George of the Celts played really well throughout. Albert of the Vikings was a standout player. He did the basics really well and chipped in with some timely moments of attacking flair and some key goals. He inspired those around him and was always looking to motivate his team mates. The top goal scorer was Henry and he was a constant thorn in the oppositions side with his intelligent runs into the oppositions area.

The overall winners were Celts in what was a very level competition throughout.

  • Year 8 House Football Matches

Fri 03 Mar 2023 Mr McGrath

    Year 8

The year 8 House Matches were an absolute pleasure to be a part of. The boys played with a fantastic attitude throughout and it was so pleasing to see the boys enjoying their football. The Challenge Cup was a joy to watch with goals from outside the area a common occurrence. Will from the Celts smashed in two crackers and was a general menace throughout. Owen scored 4 goals for the Normans and played brilliantly throughout the day. On top of his goal scoring, his link up play was exceptional and he helped get the best out of his team mates. Celts were the overall winners, taking 1st place in the Premier and Challenge Competitions. Austin and Sam played beautifully as a striking pair and Harry really benefited from their service in front of goal. Dylan was solid and assured and also provided lots of attacking intent. Freddie was player of the day and his safe hands at the back gave them a real source of comfort. Liam, Anthony, Jules and Cam were in strong form in the Challenge competition and have made huge developments as football players. George was top scorer in the Premier Competition with 4 goals.

Thanks to all the sport leaders and staff who contributed to the House Matches.

  • Year 7 House Football Matches

Fri 03 Mar 2023 Mr McGrath

    Year 7

The Vikings were crowned Champions of the House football competition after winning the Premier Trophy and coming second in the Challenge Cup. On inspection of the Vikings squad it is understandable why they did so well. A good team needs variety, desire and players who can occupy key roles. Vikings had a solid platform with players like Frankie, Benny and Joshua doing the jobs that are so important. Namely winning the ball and keeping it and cutting out opposition attacks. They had tenacity and energy with Matvi, Liam, Oliver, Adam and Jamie. These players ran tirelessly and were always available for the ball. They also had a strong array of attacking outlets with the impressive Noah, Emile and Jack constantly challenging the opposition with their intelligence and skill. Noah showed his full array of attacking skills throughout. He often managed to wriggle away from the close inspection of the defender and then had the clarity of mind to lay the ball to a player in space. A real masterclass and exhibition of reading the game. He also contributed a number of goals that would be fit for goal of the season. Jack scored an impressive 5 goals. It was a great team performance by both Vikings side. However, the day was not just about the Vikings. Far from it. All of the Houses put on a real show and should be proud of the way they played. The Celts came 2nd with Henry and Xavier central to their performance. They played multiple positions, always put the team first and were constantly looking to involve all members of the team. Saxons finished 3rd overall and the Normans were 4th.
