  • Normandy update - Thursday

Fri 05 May 2017 Miss Kendall
Today was the great walk across the bay to Mont St. Michel, led by our guides Woody and Nico. The children walked the whole way barefoot, then spent the afternoon on the island, having a tour and doing some souvenir shopping. Then in the evening, packing for the return journey tomorrow, but not before a French-themed evening, when the pupils and staff dressed up, and many were brave enough to try snails! Tomorrow we visit the Bayeaux Tapestry and the cinema at Arromanches before travelling back home in the evening.
  • Year five Cricket festival Wells Cricket Club

Fri 05 May 2017 Mrs Allen

    May 4th
The eight year five boys travelled (rather a long way round ) to Wells Cricket Club to participate in the annual Kwik cricket competition. They looked very professional in their whites and led by captain, George Ross they enjoyed a great, sunny afternoon of cricket in beautiful surroundings.
There were three other schools present: Elmhurst ( two teams) Wookey and Oakfield Middle.
The boys took it in turns to bowl an over in each match.
Considering it was the first experience for some,William Martin and Riley Reah their skills showed great timing and precision.
The two experienced cricket players batted with great finesse particularly Nathan Kemp who scored the highest score in the team, consistently hitting 6s.
Well done to all the boys: Nathan, George ,Kieran, Dennis, Louis , Will ,Riley and Max.
The boys won all their matches and hence the tournament and will now go onto represent Mendip in the next round.

  • Young Shakespeare Company visits HSMS

    Thu 04 May 2017 Miss D'Auria

On Friday 28th April, Year 8 were visited by the Young Shakespeare Company, who performed a 90 minute interactive session interspersed with key scenes in performance from Romeo and Juliet. The performance allowed opportunities for student participation and we saw some fantastic performances from some of our students. The presentation focused on characterisation and staging and included a very dramatic and exciting demonstration of stage fighting.

Year 8 pupils were extremely enthused by the whole afternoon and comments such as 'That was amazing!' could be heard from numerous boys and girls. There was a real buzz as a result.

The afternoon enabled pupils to deepen their understanding of key characters, themes and plot of the play and has helped to prepare them for future study of the play at GCSE level.
  • Normandy Trip Update

Thu 04 May 2017 Miss Kendall
Normandy trip - Tuesday and Wednesday
The year 7s in Normandy spent Tuesday settling in to the site with breadmaking and swimming games at La Grand' Ferme, as well as archery and orienteering at the nearby Chateau de la Baudonniere. On Wednesday morning, the group ventured out to a market in the town of St. Hilaire, where pupils bought their own lunch and did some shopping for souvenirs. In the afternoon, we visited a goat farm where pupils learnt about cheese-making and fed, brushed and even milked the goats! The evenings have seen pupils doing a treasure hunt and initiative puzzles and playing volleyball and ping pong... as well of course as preparing for room inspections! Everyone is well, and looking forward to our visit to Mont Saint Michel on Thursday.

  • KS3 Tennis Team's Debut

Wed 03 May 2017 Mr McGrath
Well done to Sam Relf, Tom Spinks, George Nuttycombe and Jake Gillions who helped form the Keystage 3 tennis team that travelled to Taunton prep school. Tennis is a popular sport within the community with a number of our students being coached outside of school. With this in mind, and the opportunity to participate in further sports a team was entered into the boys year 7/8 tennis competition ran by the LTA. The team was selected after a trial, but it is hoped that the Wedmore coach Craig Phillips will come in with the view to helping to develop our aspiring players.
Considering the relatively limited amount of preparation time all of the boys performed well against the Taunton top seeds. It was often just the inability to finish of close points that meant that Taunton won the games. George Nuttycombe performed very well against a skilful opponent and started brightly by winning the first game and then losing the second after deuce. Sam Relf showed some clever touches as did Jake Gillions. Both against experienced opponents. Number 1 seed Tom Spinks was up against a very able opponent and they enjoyed a good contest. A number of times Tom used a good range of shots to move the player around the court. Ultimately it came down to the experience of being able to play out the crucial points. I believe that with more exposure to the sport the players will develop this attribute. After the singles matches George and Tom and Sam and Jake combined to make two strong doubles pairs.
Congratulations and thanks to Taunton who emerged as winners in all of the games. The next game is a home game against Taunton B, with Wedmore tennis club kindly offering to host us.

  • Year 7 Normandy Trip

Tue 02 May 2017 Miss Kendall

After a very early start in the morning, and an extremely choppy crossing, everyone was very happy to arrive at the Grand' Ferme yesterday evening. The pupils settled into their rooms, had a tour around the site, and ate dinner together before an early night. Today, pupils are spending time at the site doing breadmaking and swimming, as well as archery and orienteering at nearby Chateau Beaumont. Photos to follow tomorrow!
  • Somerset Inter-Area Cross Country Event

Tue 02 May 2017 Mr Jackson

A fantastic climax to the cross country season.

Four Year 5 and 6 runners from Hugh Sexey were selected to represent Mendip at an inter-area cross country event at Millfield Prep. School.

The quality of the Mendip league was clearly shown as they were team winners in every race.

All of our runners ran well and contributed to Mendip's success.  Katie was 20th in the Years 5&6 girls race.  Oscar, Alex and Finley were 4th, 11th and 15th respectively in the Years 5&6 boys race.  For Oscar, this was probably the race of his life ... so far.  In the Year 5&6 boys race, Mendip absolutely dominated by taking 10 of the top 15 places.
