  • Year 5 House Rugby Matches

Thu 23 Nov 2017 Mr McGrath
The year 5 boys took part in their first House competition at Hugh Sexey School on November 20th. The players were very excited about the event and all of the boys have been working hard on their rugby skills in games lessons. This year we had a contact group and a tag group, and it allowed a number of the boys who are new to the game the chance to enjoy running, catching, passing and scoring without the obstacle of being tackled.
All of the payers worked extremely hard and enjoyed the games. The Vikings were eventually crowned champions after putting in solid performances in the contact and the tag games. Michal Eames, Will Fowler, Lewis Hay, Liam Hector, Jack Hillman, Harry Oliff, Eric Newton and Johnny Leeall put in impressive performances for a House that were very well stocked in rugby ability. In fact it is a credit to the other houses that they were able to reduce the scoring threats poised by the powerful Vikings. Celts were the runners up and pushed the Vikings very close in the final games. The Celts also had a number of impressive performances with Kyran Addis Mitchell and Finley Bendle combining well. George Ham also impressed with his tackling, and Toby Hembrow McKinley and Oliver Kemsley looked dangerous every time they had the ball and every time someone was brave enough to run at them. A notably mention must also go to Sam Bishop of the  Normans who saved his best performance for the last game where he was absolutely immense in defence. Archie Whittaker of Saxons with another player on a mission to do his best for his house.
The players should be most proud of their efforts and I was thrilled to see the sportsmanship shown by the Vikings, who leant players to the other houses. It was good to see these boys play with as much spirit when they were representing other houses. We look forward to seeing this group of boys develop.
  • U12 Girls' Football - ESFA NATIONALS ROUND 1

Wed 22 Nov 2017 Mr Waterfield

U12 ESFA NATIONALS ROUND 1 versus MILLFIELD PREP SCHOOL - AWAY

On Monday the girls U12's football team travelled to Millfield Prep school for the 1st round of the ESFA CUP.

The girls have been working extremely hard in training preparing for this exciting fixture.

Millfield won the coin toss and chose to kick off, playing on a lovely pitch which was in absolutely great condition.

From the first whistle Hugh Sexey's  were dominant, playing some great football despite the difficult wind conditions and scoring 4 goals. Some of the goals were absolutely spectacular, particularly Jemima Thurling's 20 yarder screamer in the top corner!

As half time approached we were able to make some changes and try out different position/tactics. All credit to the girls who came off the bench: Slater, Charalambous, Jackson-Voyzey, and Catley-Day; they came on and made an immediate impact - all are fighting for the starting spot next round which is great to see.

Hugh Sexey's won the game by a big margin - all credit to Millfield for not giving up and keeping going.

Player of the match was Jemima Thurling for her dangerous goal scoring ability, with 8 goals to her name.  A special mention as well for Millie Pargeter who is getting better every game and put in a solid display in defence.

This was a great start to the U12's campaign. Well done girls - keep up the good work.

  • Year 8 Boys House Rugby Matches

Wed 22 Nov 2017 Mr McGrath
Many congratulations to the Normans house who were crowned house champions in rugby. The morning competition was hotly contested with fantastic physicality and skill. All of the sides played attractive and positive rugby, and it was great to see such a high level of participation and enjoyment. There were some fantastic individual performances with Jacob Ayres, Henry Flanagan, Tyler Downie and Sergio Wadey catching the eye for the Normans in the contact group. The Normans were well stocked with quality with Fraser Bruce and Harry Macinnes playing excellently in the tag tournament. It was pleasing to see the players enjoying the game with Ewan Duckett, Nathan Radford and James Ford of the Celts continuing to improve. George Nuttycombe of the Celts enjoyed a stellar competition and did his best to inspire his players. All of the players should be very proud of their efforts and I hope they continue to enjoy the game next year and beyond.

    Tuesday 21st November
The year eight girls have been very enthusiastic  ever since they all started playing hockey in year five.
It was a great morning of skilful 11 a side play. The girls have been training in their half of the year group, and this showed, as the standard and the knowledge of positional play was outstanding.
It was a very closely fought battle between the four houses.
In the end the might Victorious Vikings won with a total of 15 points. Well done.
    Final score . Saxons 7, Celts 12, Normans 14, and Vikings 15
    Well done to all players.

  • National Schools Equestrian Association - County Showjumping Championships.

Tue 21 Nov 2017 Mrs Beasley
On Sunday 19th November, two members of the School equestrian team competed at the National Schools Equestrian Association County Showjumping Championships.
Maddy Ross competed in two classes on her pony Bond, and Asha Leavey competed on her pony Tilly. Both rode brilliantly to get clear rounds in a very large showjumping course.
This was their first time at an NSEA event representing the school so they did really well and will now be competing in more events with other members of the team in the new year.
    Well done Maddy and Asha!

Our Shoebox Appeal has been hugely successful thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the parents, careers and pupils of Hugh Sexey Middle School. A group of hard-working year 8 pupils have given up their lunchtimes to help wrap boxes, sort donations and allocate presents. I am sure that the recipients of the gifts will be truly delighted by your kindness. Thank you!

  • Under 13 Girls Football - ESFA Nationals Round 2 versus Kings Hall Taunton

Wed 15 Nov 2017 Mr Waterfield

Hugh Sexey's was again drawn to play an away fixture for Round 2 of the ESFA Nationals, this time playing away to Kings Hall in Taunton. We knew this would be a tough fixture as Kings Hall have a great sporting reputation, and the school has outstanding sports facilities.

Hugh Sexey's started the first half very brightly, immediately applying  pressure on Kings Hall's goal keeper, who was kept very busy saving all the shots that were fired at her. Eventually our goal scoring 'machine' Izzy Cook found a way to beat the keeper, dribbling round her and slotting the ball home to put Hugh Sexey's in the lead.  Kings Hall fought their way back into the game, and had some chances to level the score, only to be denied by our great defending trio: Evie Clements, Harriet Griffiths, and Evie Jones.

Hugh Sexey's started to play passing football which caught Kings Hall off guard. A lovely ball played by Jessie Woodcock through the middle, coupled with Jemima Thurling pressurising their defenders resulted in an own goal. The score at half time was 2-0.

In the second half Hugh Sexey's gave debuts to Libby Slater, Lowenna Jackson-Voyzey and Ella Woodcock; all did really well and proved to be great additions to the school team.   Hugh Sexey's got the final say when Jessie Woodcock smashed the ball home to wrap up the game; the final score was 3-0 to us.

Both teams played some exciting football, which was pleasing to see. All our girls were fantastic and they thoroughly deserved the win.  Hugh Sexey's are now through the next round where they face a very tough game against Gordano.

Player of the match was Harriet Griffiths.  Kings Hall kindly gave our players a lovely snack to eat on the way home, which they all enjoyed. Many thanks to Kings Hall for being great hosts, and for looking after us.

    The Squad

Philippa Griffths, Evie Clements, Evie Jones, Harriet Griffiths, Millie Pargeter, Jessie Woodcock, Jemima Thurling, Daisy Moss, Izzy Cook, Emilie Peake, Ella Woodcock, Libby Slater, Lowenna Jackson-Voyzey
