  • Year eight netball tournament at Fairlands school.

Thu 15 Mar 2018 Mrs Allen
     March 14th
The team played well against a range of Mendip schools: Wells Blue, Crispin , Fairlands , Selwood, Oakfield and Shapwick schools. It was rather cold and wet but there was, as always, with year eight girls, a great team spirit.
Losing their first Mach against Wells Blue 11-3, the team went onto win against Crispin and Fairlands and drew against Selwood and Oakfield. Time prevented us from playing newcomers Shapwick. Wells Blue went onto win the tournament and the overall results will be published later this week.
Mia Johnson who is a very talented Captain was voted player of the match by five schools.
However, the whole team are to be congratulated as they played with a great deal of skill and agility.
    Well done.
  • Year 8 Boys House Football

Thu 15 Mar 2018 Mr McGrath
Many congratulations to the Normans who emerged as winners in the house football. Glorious spring sunshine set the tone to a splendid morning of football at Hugh Sexey. It was pleasing to see the vast majority of the boys taking part and the games were hotly contested. Ewan Duckett of the Celts was a victim of some tough tackling early on, but he picked himself up and delivered some commanding performances for the Celts. The Celts were a well drilled and committed outfit and in many ways were unlucky to finish with only 6 points. They picked up victories against the Saxons and the Vikings. The Vikings ran all of the teams close and secured 2nd place with 10 points. There wins coming against Saxons and Celts B and Normans B. Ronnie Newton put in some big games for the Vikings, as did the industrious Henry Reid and the creative Aidan Scoulding. In the end the Normans were simply too powerful an outfit and it is no surprise with a number of skilful players in their ranks. Henry Flanagan and Fraser Bruce worked tirelessly throughout and George Moss was a potent goal scorer.
Well done to all of the players involved, and many thanks to the staff who came and offered their support.

  • Year eight house netball

Wed 14 Mar 2018 Mrs Allen

    Tuesday 13th March
A fantastic sunny morning for year eight girls' house netball. Because of the large number of pupils in year eight there was three teams per house. This did mean matches were seven minutes  one way.
I have enjoyed teaching this group of girls netball since the beginning of year five. They have really enjoyed the sport and the atmosphere today reflected this.
Some great performances from each girl .
The final score was Saxons 16 Celts 21 Vikings 23 and in first place the Normans 35
    Well done.

  • All Years Netball vs Fairlands

Wed 14 Mar 2018 Mrs Allen
    Victory
A lovely afternoon of good quality netball versus Fairlands Middle School.
    Year five
The year fives got off to a great start and played in their first competitive match. There was some very accurate shooting from Sophie and Fion. Captained by squad leader , Sydney the team worked hard to win 12-0
    Year six
The team have been training hard on a Tuesday night with Mrs. Scott. Their commitment proved useful and captained by Grace the team also won 12-0 .
    Year seven
Captained by Mary the year sevens played an interesting game which was rather fast and a little bit scary at times. It was good to see their defence skills working with a very strong performance by Esther playing GK. The final score was 5- 2 to Hugh Sexeys.
    Year eight
A very promising performance by both teams which bodes well for the future year 9  team at Kings. Their experience showed and it was nice for the younger pupils to watch such a good demonstration of skill. Mia shot very accurately and Isobel kept the game under control playing as WA. Final score 12-5 to Hugh Sexey .
Many thanks in particular to Mrs. Evans for transporting so many Fairlands pupils over. Also to Mr. McGrath and Mrs. Trinnick for their support and help with umpiring and pupil safety.

YOUNG VIOLINIST WINS ROTARY DISTRICT MUSIC COMPETITION

Twelve year-old Poppy McGhee, a pupil at Hugh Sexey C of E Middle School, won the Rotary 1200 District Young Musician Competition (instrumental section) held recently at Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar. She beat other instrumentalists sponsored by Rotary clubs across Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.

She played ‘Chant-Poème’ by Aram Khachaturian and ‘The Hot Canary’ by Paul Nero. Of the latter piece, Poppy said, “The Hot Canary makes me smile; I hope it makes you smile too.” Her playing was described by the three adjudicators as ‘demonstrating complete mastery of her instrument’ and having ‘captivated the audience’.

Poppy, who was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mendip now goes forward to the Rotary regional competition where she will compete against other young musicians from the south-west of England.

  • World Book Day

Tue 06 Mar 2018 Mrs Jarrett
Despite being snowed off on World Book Day (1st of March), some of the children in Year 6 had decorated their classroom doors as book covers. A very attractive addition to our learning environment.
On returning to school, on Monday 5th March we celebrated by dressing up as book characters, completing quizzes and other book related activities.
A great effort by Year 6. Well done and keep reading!
