  • Year Seven House Hockey

Mon 19 Nov 2018 Mrs Allen

The third of our inter house competition. This time it was the Year Seven girls.
Thank you to Daisy and Mary for their help with coaching and umpiring.
Many thanks to Mr. Jackson for his continual support and enthusiasm.
The girls sorted themselves into position and into A and B teams. The tournament got off to a fine start with early goals from the Saxons and the Celts.
Great performances from all players and the standard of play was very good. Charli in the Celts was a very accurate striker and there was some excellent midfield play from Katie in the Celts. Winnie, a very committed club player , was very strong in defence. Tegan also showed defensive skills in goal for the Saxons. Meghan showed her tenacity and determination throughout.
    Final results
    3rd place Saxons and Normans
    2nd Vikings
    Winners Celts

  • Hinkley B Trip

Fri 16 Nov 2018 Mrs Adair

This week, 30 Year 7 pupils made the first of two visits to Hinkley B Power Station.  This trip is a joint Humanities and Science trip, aimed to help pupils learn about the generation process and environmental considerations of Nuclear Energy.  The pupils were incredibly engaged, with the tour guides commenting one how insightful our pupils comments were.  The pupils were very interested in the range of jobs that will be on offer through EDF when Hinkley C becomes operational.  The second trip will go on Tuesday 11th of December, with pupils again needing to arrive at school by 8.25 am and returning in time for afternoon lessons.

  • Remembrance Week

Fri 16 Nov 2018 Mrs Adair

Pupils and Staff were incredibly busy in their preparations for Remembrance Week.  Firstly, many departments contributed work they had created in their study of the First World War to the 'Wedmore Remembers' exhibition at Wedmore village hall.  From the comments in the visitor's book, it seems that their effort was well received by the public.  On the Wednesday of Remembrance week, two former HSMS pupils, Anna LIttlewood-Hillsdon and Alex Cramp (now at Kings of Wessex) travelled with Mrs Adair and Mr Broad to London to attend an awards ceremony at the Tower of London.  The award, given by University College London was in recognition of their work on their World War One Centenary Battlefields Tour Legacy Project.  We were one of five schools honoured from across the country.  Finally, on Friday HSMS welcomed representatives from both local Royal British Legion branches, as well as former and serving Armed Forces personnel to our Remembrance service.  I extend a special thank you to our Cadets for their contribution to the service.  As always, the pupils rose to the occasion and conducted themselves with the utmost respect for the fallen.  This year the wreaths laid by each class were in commemoration of VC and DCM recipients from the Somerset Light Infantry

  • Year 6 House Matches -Rugby

Fri 16 Nov 2018 Mr McGrath
Congratulations to the Vikings house who emerged as victors in both the tag and the contact rugby competitions. Considering the players the Vikings had at there disposal it didn't come as a surprise to see them in the final places. Alfie, Lewis, Liam and Jack all performed well with Jonny and Oliver always on hand to run in the final pass. The players should all be very proud of their efforts and I hope they continue to enjoy rugby.

  • Year 8 House Matches - Rugby

Fri 16 Nov 2018 Mr McGrath
Well done to all of the boys who took part in the house rugby matches. There was a tag and a contact competition to cater for the different interests of the players and both served up some excellent rugby. The tag competition was played in an excellent spirit with all the players displaying the core values of the sport. Joe, Lewis, Sam and Josh displayed how much they have evolved as players this year. All of them were busy looking for work and were able to straighten the line to create space out wide. Harvey and Ollie benefited from this with continued runs down the wings for their houses. The Vikings emerged as the winners for the tag completion followed by the Celts, Saxons and Normans.
    Tag
    1 Vikings
    2 Celts
    3 Saxons
    4 Normans

The contact competition was a full bloodied event as expected. The opening games displayed a lot of forceful and assertive tackles with Sam, Will, Ben and Kenny leading the charge. As the boys discovered that running through each other does not always result in scoring try's they started to use a little more subtlety in their methods of attack in this resulted in open space for the likes of Tom, Luc and Joel. The level of rugby was very high and it was pleasing to see the boys taking it seriously but also enjoying the day. The Celts emerged as the winners, but all of the players should be happy with the performance of their houses.
    1 Celts
    2 Saxons
    3 Vikings
    4 Normans
  • Year 8 House Matches - Hockey

Fri 16 Nov 2018 Mrs Allen

Always a very competitive event, year eight house matches held on Thursday 15th was an extremely well played event.

It was nice to see so many girls enjoying their hockey and able to display their great team work .

Thank you to Mrs. Scott for helping with the officiating .

Vikings looked strong as many of the the team represent the school and attend club. Daisy BH led the team to an important victory against the Celts. Lowenna was a truly inspiring captain of the Celts and showed great perseverance in defeat. The Celt cheerleading was inspiring. Mary from the Normans, used her defensive skills to prevent a relentless attack. Ella H discovered a new talent as Sweeper for the Saxons.

At the end of the tournament, special mention was given to club player of each house and newcomer.

    The final score was

    Normans 10

    Saxons 11

    Celts 11

    Vikings won 16 points.

  • KS2 Hockey Matches vs Fairlands 14.11.18

Thu 15 Nov 2018 Mrs Allen

The teams set off from school at 3pm . It was inspiring to take such an enthusiastic and keen group of younger players to their first away match.
There were four teams in total. - 5 A and 5B and 6A and 6 B . At this age the girls play seven a side.
Many thanks to both Mary and Lowenna from year eight who had their first experience of umpiring.
    Year 5
Both teams have been extremely excited and prepared for this competition. The A team have been very dedicated at club and showed great potential in defence . They faced a very strong opposition and did not give up at any point. Captain, Ruby was voted player of the match by Fairlands. The final score was 8-0 to Fairlands. The B team enjoyed their match, umpired by Mary and shared their roles around. They were ahead by one goal after the first half but in the last moment Fairlands scored an equaliser. The final score was 1-1
    Year Six
The A team got off to a great start. There was some extremely resilient tackling from the girls and at the end of the first half, the team were ahead by two goals. Great defence from Annabelle and some fine moments of attack from Amelie and Anna. Fairlands equalised in the second half and the final score was 2-2. The B team had a goal - less first half. Lowenna and myself umpired the second half and the girls scored an early goal. Great performances from each player.
The final score was 3-0 to Hugh Sexey.
Many thanks to Mrs. Callow for her continual support.
It is very exciting that so many of our girls are experiencing hockey in the Cheddar Valley at such a young age from both schools.
A fun afternoon enjoyed by all who came, played and supported. Well done.

  • Year Six House Matches - Hockey

Thu 15 Nov 2018 Mrs Allen

The house matches were played on the MUGA which was a first in Hugh Sexey history.
All girls were eager to participate and the weather was kind so all was set for a great afternoon of hockey.
The four houses were divided into two teams per house , an A team and a B team. I explained that all results counted and this inspired some great cheerleading from the girls. Well done to Meredith from 6ILH for the only banner which she had made in her own time.
Two year eight players helped to umpire the matches- Sophia and Evie. Many thanks to the two sports leaders.

Celts looked strong from the start of the competition. Katie and Ella , both dominant in attack. There was some very fine moments of play from all girls and it soon became evident it was going to be a closely fought tournament . Layla was strong in defence, a credit to her as she has been a very reliable team player , not missing any practises.
After almost an hour and a half of hockey the final result was as followed based on number of matches won, drawn or lost.
    4th place Vikings.
    3rd place Normans
    2nd place Saxons
    Winners 2018 Celts
I have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and skill set shown by our year six players. Well done to all.

  • U13 Boys Football (Somerset Cup vs Bucklers Mead - AWAY)

Wed 14 Nov 2018 Mr Waterfield

The boys started the campaign for the Somerset Cup away to Bucklers Mead School.
We were looking forward to playing on their 4G Astro Turf. Hugh Sexey's started the game very strongly playing a passing football game which led to goals being scored early on. At half time Hugh Sexey's were 6-0 up. We made some changes and introduced George, Henry and Oliver in the game.
Striker duo Jacob and Kenny were on fire in front of the goal throughout the whole game, putting their keeper under immense pressure.
The midfield five - Thelonious, Luc, Sam, Louis, and Ben - all worked very hard throughout the whole game, running from box to box and producing some great football. Their passing and distribution of the ball was some of the best I have seen. The back 3 - Oscar, Henry, and Harvey - were solid and protected our goalkeeper Will superbly.
The game ended 11-2. This was a fantastic team effort; the boys' attitude and effort was outstanding.
We look forward to seeing them in action against Beechen Cliff in the next round.
    Well done lads!

    Mr Waterfield
