Sun 20th March - Mark Youth Theatre entered two shows in the County Drama Festival in Somerton. Current and past students from Hugh Sexey were all involved. “Don’t Shoot the Messenger” won the Eyris Jones Memorial Trophy for the Best Production by a Youth Group, and won The Hope Cup for the Best All Round Presentation (including all the adult groups). Past pupil Jack Cole won the Best Performer under the age of 30.
Clare Banwell and Laura Hackling directed the shows, and the children in the winning show were Caitlin Tolton, Maddy Ballam, Alex Evans and Harvey Godwin from year 8; Austin Peters, Sassie Carrington and Maisie Sharp from year 7; Sajda Idris, Scarlett Smith, Katherine Evans and Daisy Moss from year 6; and Ella Woodcock, Lowenna Jackson-Voyzey, Jessie Woodcock and Lily May Mounty from year 5; and past pupil Lauren Woodcock. Hannah Tatton, Year 6, was also part of the winning play but was unable to attend the Sunday performance. This was a brilliant achievement for the children from Hugh Sexey and it was really lovely that every year group was represented.
On 15th March a group of 43 pupils visited the Shal Jalal Jame Mosque and the Ramagarhia Sikh Temple, both in Bristol. In KS2 pupils studied the key aspects of the Islamic faith, and are currently studying the teachings and ideas of the Sikh faith. Mohammed, the education officer from the Bristol Muslim Cultural Society gave a very informative talk to the pupils and showed us around the mosque. Pupils were rather impressed by the dome.
We then walked over the Sikh Temple, where the President, Mr Singh welcomed us and invited us to eat our lunch in the Langar Hall, where Sikhs share a communal, vegetarian meal, every Sunday after their worship. Pupils were then invited upstairs, where Sikhs worship. They were inspired by the beautiful and ornate decorations. The pupils listened very carefully and respectfully to Mr Singh and answered his questions. Two of our pupils even had a chance to try playing the harmonium! Before we left, pupils were able to walk round a look carefully at the Sikh Holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib.
The year 8 House football competition was played on a clear and brisk Friday afternoon. Tension and excitement levels were high, and the four houses, Viking, Celts, Saxons and Normans were all quietly optimistic of securing the converted house trophy.
The Vikings got of to a flying start against the Saxons. They won the game 5 - 0 and played some blistering football in the process. On pitch 2 the Celts cruised to a 3-0 victory against a spirited Normans outfit. Alex Kimsley played well throughout the day and did a sterling job of directing play from midfield. For the Normans Brandon James and Odin Ward worked well and were a credit to their house. The Celts continued their fine form with a 6-0 victory over the Saxons. Whilst both Normans sides got victories against the Vikings. In the end the Celts just piped it with 14 points courtesy of 5 wins and 1 draw. The Normans finished in 2nd place with 13 points, with the Vikings and Saxons on 9 and 8 points respectively.
It was a lovely afternoon of football and the boys should be proud of the way they played and conducted themselves.
Thanks also to Mr Lamb and Mr Waterfield for their help throughout the afternoon.
A number of boys from year 7 and 8 made the short journey to Kings of Wessex School to play basketball against Fairlands year 8 team. Basketball has proved to be popular with a number of the students and the fixture gave an opportunity for the players to experience playing on a full sized court against different opposition. The team started strongly. Harley Wilkinson proved to be very proficient at gaining offensive and defensive rebounds and this set the platform from which the team could attack and defend. The two Jacobs, Nelson and Westbrook, gave the team energy and tenacity and they did an excellent job of fronting the zonal defensive strategy. Hugh Sexey scored a number of quick breaks in the first quarter. Harvey Godwin was often on the end of the quick breaks and he got an impressive amount of points in this fixture. Basketball is one of the ultimate team sports as every player must contribute to attack and defense in equal measure. Mitchel Simpson was a tribute to this and had a fine game. He was good at rebounding and showed excellent ball skills and blocking ability. Morgan Roberts had a strong game at power forward and hit shots under the post and from distance.
Overall it was a very positive experience for the players and something they will hopefully continue to enjoy and develop in. Thanks to Fairlands and Ms Tyson for agreeing to the game. We look forward to meeting up with you again next week.
Thanks also to Kings of Wessex for the use of the sports hall.
The Normans were crowned the winners of the year 6 House Football competition on a wet and windy day. The competition was rescheduled due to poor weather and Chocolate factory commitments, however the delay did not effect the quality of the football on show. All houses played well and with good spirit and it was a joy to see the players enjoy the sport of football so much.
The Saxons made a promising start with a commanding 4 - 0 victory against the Saxons. Robert Fairchild and Ethan Floyd both played well in the opening games for the Saxons. On pitch 2 the Normans and the Celts shared the spoils with the Normans winning one game 1 - 0 and the Celts taking a 3 - 2 win in the second game. Ewan Duckett was in white hot form, always selecting the correct time to pass and showing a neat turn of pace when beating opponents. Jacob Ayres put in a typically commanding performance for the Normans, throwing his body in the way of the ball and marshalling the defence with purpose. The Vikings worked well throughout, gaining a win against the Saxons and the Celts.
The margin of victory was very close in most games, and many results could of gone either way. In the end the final standings were
Normans - 16
Celts - 14
Vikings - 10
Saxons - 8
Thanks to Mr Waterfield for his help throughout and the sport leaders Jack Gillett and George Champion who were excellent referees.
