Tristan (7RMG) performed brilliantly in 2 classes at Highbridge Arts Festival last week; he entered the percussion category with his drum kit and also accompanied grade 4-5 solo.   Tristan came away with two gold medals, including a distinction in one. Very well done Tristan.

  • Netball - HSMS vs Fairlands

Mon 18 Mar 2024 Mrs Allen

It was good to welcome the netball teams from Fairlands . Each year group was represented in this annual competition between the two middle schools . The event got underway despite the very damp and cold conditions.

Year 7 and year 5 started. It was a very close battle for the year sevens and the ball was travelling fluidly up and down the court. A last minute net from captain Kitty saw the final score at 2-1 to Hugh Sexey

The year five played brilliantly in their first match for the school . Olive the captain led her team to victory and the final score 7-1 to Hugh Sexey

Year eight and six played next. It was good to see the other teams cheering for their school.

Year eight played very calm netball and finally won 7-2 . Some excellent shooting from Tabitha and Sophia . Year six have been very keen at club and they played very good netball . Xanthe and Eva shot well and eventually won 8-2

Thank you to Mrs Pople from Fairlands for all her hard work in getting her teams to us here at school .

Very encouraging netball from both schools.

  • Thank you to pupils and families for prioritising attendance

    Fri 15 Mar 2024 R Adair

A positive connection is well known to exist between strong, regular attendance at school and pupils being better able to reach aspirational outcomes in their learning.  Being in school also helps pupils to develop lifelong friendships and relationships with adults and peers.

CONGRATULATIONS to our pupils and families for being recognised for fantastic attendance last term.

If you feel that you would like to speak to your child's teacher or head of year about attendance issues concerns, please don't hesitate to contact that school office, who gladly direct your enquiry.

  • House Football Matches

Thu 14 Mar 2024 Mr McGrath

Well done to all the pupils who represented their Houses in the School Football Competition. It was wonderful to see so many pupils taking such pride in playing for their Houses and the level of skill and commitment on show was an absolute joy to watch. Thanks also to all the Sport Leaders and members of staff who contributed to the 4 competitions.

In year 5 the Vikings were victorious in a well matched and spirited competition. The year 6 winners were Saxons who had quality all over the pitch. The year 7s competition was a thrilling event from start to finish with every House fielding 2 teams and all the players making a valuable contribution. The Saxons took the honours in the end but it was an evenly matched contest throughout. In year 8 the Vikings were triumphant in a competition that hinged on a close fought match between them and the Saxons.

  • Mendip Junior Cross country Race @ Downside

Mon 04 Mar 2024 Mr Jackson

A bumper team of 17 runners from Years 5 & 6 took part in the penultimate race of the Mendip Junior Schools Cross Country League at Downside School.  This included first time appearances from Bebe, Charlie, Evelyn, Thea and Xanthe.

A fantastic effort all round in muddy and slippy conditions.  Several of our runners had their strongest race of the season.  Tilly and Bea not only achieved top 10 positions but were also the best Year 5 runners in their race.  Will continues to go from strength to strength and ran brilliantly to finish fourth out of 100 runners.

  • Year 7 House Netball

Wed 28 Feb 2024 Mrs Allen

It was great that the sunshine appeared, and our year seven girls enjoyed a warmer house tournament.

They have shown great aptitude for the sport in their game's lessons, and I know this was a very eagerly anticipated event.

Thank you to year eights for officiating this event. This meant Mrs. Cameron and I were able to watch the talent pool we have in this year group.

All houses were able to enter two teams and every girl represented their house.

    It was very close.

The Saxons came third and the second place was drawn between Normans and Vikings . Both won the same number of matches and shot the same nets .

Celts won the year seven house cup .

A very promising event with many moments of skilful play.

  • Year 8 House Netball

Wed 28 Feb 2024 Mrs Allen

This was a very enjoyable event . 95% of our year 8 girls took part and each one played a vital role in the final result. Thanks to Mrs Hart, an avid sports enthusiast , who helped umpire this event.

Each house was able to put two teams into the tournament and each team added valuable points. There were some great moments of netball and so pleasing to witness the standard of play from all girls.

The Saxons were the overall champions in this tournament , both of their teams very accurate with shooting .

As the rain started to fall, the whole group had an enjoyable twenty minutes of 'let's dance' which completed a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of sport

  • Year 6 House Netball

Tue 27 Feb 2024 Mrs Allen

This was held on the MUGA . Year six girls have worked hard in lessons with a great positive energy which was seen by all in this tournament.

I was impressed with the cheerleading and support that the girls gave each other .

It was very close but on this occasion the Normans won the house cup .

It was encouraging to see the year six girls apply precious knowledge and exciting to think about their potential as they move towards KS3 .

A very enjoyable afternoon of netball.

Thank you to our year 8 sports leaders for officiating this event.

  • Year 8 Careers Visit to Cannington College Farm

Tue 27 Feb 2024 Mrs Adair

On Tuesday 27th February, a group of Year 8 pupils travelled to Rodway Farm in Cannington, one of the Bridgwater and Taunton College campuses to learn a bit more about Post 16 qualifications in agriculture and land-based studies.  Dani, the FarmLink coordinator, programmed a visit that included learning a bit about large animal husbandry alongside the many technical and vocational skills, qualifications and careers that support farmers and the wider agriculture industry.  Pupils saw first hand how modern technology is increasing milking yields through the utilisation of a robot machine affectionately called Juno, who sweeps up the silage the herd spreads around when they eat.  This ensures that nothing is wasted, and the animal are never without their food.  Pupils also learned how electronic and magnetic collars worn by the cows are able to sense how often they eat and limit food delivery, if needed, to ensure optimal health.  Walking the farm site also provide an opportunity for pupils to consider the responsibility farmers have towards maintaining the biodiversity of the land and learn more about what some farms are now doing to ensure that agriculture and wildlife coexist harmoniously.  Before our departure, we were able to meet and talk with some of the students currently studying at the college and find out more about their projected career path and ambitions.  Undoubtedly though, one of the highlights of the visit was the time spent in the nursery sheds - the young calves and lambs were adorable to pet and cuddle.

  • Career visit to Weston College Skilled Trades Centre

Tue 27 Feb 2024 Mrs Adair

On Thursday 22nd February, 30 Year 8 pupils participated in an elective Careers Education visit to Weston College Skills Centre.  The purpose of the trip was to expose the pupils to possible Post 16 qualification pathways which may be of interest to them.  We were hosted by the automotive department where the lecturers led the pupils through a carousel of activities.  Pupils learned how to take a wheel off a car, disassemble, reassemble and check a  starter motor, remove and replace faulty indicator bulbs, change brake pads and dilute anti-freeze to the correct level for the local seasonal temperatures.  The afternoon session involved a tour of the extensive facility and a special talk from the apprenticeship lead about the range of apprenticeship qualifications (from entry level all the way through to degree level) that could be studied at the college.  A special thank you to Georgie and her team from the education outreach department at Weston College.  A great time was had by all.
