Somerset Girls' Football Cup

Somerset Under 12s Cup

Hugh Sexey 7 - 0 Selwood

Selwood travelled to Hugh Sexey in round 2 of the girls Under 12s Cup. Some of the girls selected had played the week before in the girls Under 14s game against Wadham. That experience would prove valuable. On the back of her commanding performance against older girls, Brooke was made Captain and she flourished in that role. Prior to the game she ensured there was a sense of togetherness in the group and the feeling of excitement and optimism was evident. The side was picked (as always) on account of the players who had committed the most to training. The bench was powerful with Amisha, Etta, Lily, Beth and Harriet all experienced club players.

The game started in cagey fashion with both sides looking like they didn't want to make a mistake. Florence started to grow into the game and we started to get a lot of joy with moving the ball into the left hand side. Both sides had chances with Isabelle striking the post after a well worked corner. Sophie was a rock at the back, and her ability to get possession and launch attacks with her inciteful forward passes from the back proved to be the way Hugh Sexey would play the game. After 20 minutes the score was 0-0 and there wasn't a lot between the two sides. Amisha and Harriet were introduced and they were able to slot into a settled formation and have a really positive impact on the game. Harriet, who played in an attacking midfield role, showed immense ability on the ball. She made some wonderful passes early on and had the ability to beat the first, and sometimes second and third player to set up attacking opportunities. Her link up play with Amisha, Bethany and Florence was sublime and it was only a matter of time before goals came. The first was a neat finish by Harriet after great work from Verity and Sophie. The second was an unfortunate own goal for Selwood after relentless pressure from the Hugh Sexey attackers. It says everything about this group of players that they didn't over celebrate this goal and instead showed excellent emotional intelligence. Amisha then made an excellent run down the right and crossed for Harriets 2nd Goal. Harriet then turned provided with a great pass through the defense for Amisha to finish emphatically.

The game finished 7-0 with all the players making a huge contribution. Harriet finished the game with 5 goals which is remarkable for a year 6 playing a year up. What really struck me about her performance was how well she was able to link up play. In patches we played some really good and positive football with every player looking to have the ball and help keep it.

Onwards and upwards to our next game against Hayesfield.

Player of the Match - Verity. She never stopped working on and off the ball and made it very difficult for the opposition to get going. She also contributed to the attacking play. A lot of the attacking players made the noticeable contributions but it was our discipline when defending that set this platform.
