Somerset Schools' Golf Championship

Mendip Golf club hosted the annual Somerset Golf Championship on a bright and fresh day. The conditions were perfectly suited to 18 holes of golf and the Mendip Club did a fabulous job of maintaining the green and hosting the players. 7 players were entered from Hugh Sexey and all involved enjoyed the day immensely. The standard was very high, with Milfield and Kings College entering a number of players of the very highest standard. It was no surprise that Milfield won the team event with a very impressive collective score. The Hugh Sexey pupils were excellent throughout and a credit to their school, club and parents. Beth Williams had a day to remember coming 1st place in the girls in the net score competition with a score of 63. Jennifer Hughes finished 4th, with Jessica Haines and Harriet Lockley finishing 8th and 9th respectively. In the gross category Harriet Lockley finished 7th with a score of 90. This is most impressive when you consider the experience of the players Harriet was up against.

In the boys category Ben Haines was runner up in the net score with 64. Ben was also our best placed player in the gross event finishing 35th with a score of 100.

Overall it was a hugely enjoyable competition with valuable experience gained for the young golf side. Hopefully this will lead to more opportunities for the players and they will continue to enjoy the sport and develop.

Many thanks for Stuart Wells of Milfield for inviting us to the event and organising the order. Thanks also to Mendip Golf Club for allowing the players full access to the course. It was a pleasure seeing the boys and girls engage in a different sport.
