Year 8 Football vs Wells Blue

Year 8 Boys 2 - 3 Wells Blue

The year 8 football team will rue missed opportunities in a close fought game against Wells Blue. Wells Blue started very brightly as Hugh Sexey tried to run off the long commute through the traffic. As they settled they started to assert control with Hugo leading the line energetically. A perfectly played ball by Hugo sent Will through, but he was closed down before a shot could be unleashed. Hugh Sexey continued to find space for the 2 wide attackers of Will and Charlie with Hugo, Dennis and Ellis often exploiting the space behind. Unfortunately a combination of desperate defence and a reluctance to shoot on sight meant that they were unable to register a goal. Wells were full of quality and their skilful midfield created a chance that the striker duely converted. Hugh Sexey continued to push with Dylan, Oliver and the midfield anchor Alex playing with real purpose. Unfortunately the game started to slip out of reach when another quick break by Wells was ruthlessly finished. Hugh Sexey came back, and after some neat approach play Dennis hit a rocket of a shot into the top corner taking the game to 2-1. With Hugh Sexey dominating possession it looked like they might grab an equaliser but they were once again caught in transition, with Wells scoring again to make it 3-1. I was disappointed with some of the players work of the ball and body language and made this known at half time. When representing a team it is essential you give the best account of yourself and encourage others. Sadly I didn't feel every player was doing this as I would expect. The second half was all Hugh Sexey but they were unable to score the elusive goal. Chance after chance was created with Nathan providing another outlet with his rapier pace. George and Riley settled into their defensive duties and  as they moved the ball forward with more purpose space was more easy to find. Hugo's relentless running also meant the defence sat deeper allowing the midfield trio more time on the ball. Nathan hit a great shot across goal to take it to 3-2 but despite a frantic last 5 minutes they were unable to grab the deserved equaliser. Well done to Wells who played with great spirit and energy throughout the game.
