The year 8 rugby team travelled to Tor RFC in Glastonbury for a match under the flood lights. With storm Eunice due to hit the following day it was pleasing that the game went ahead, and the weather held out. The recent heavy downpour of rain meant that conditions were not conducive for flowing and expansive rugby. The early exchanges were all about defence and Hugh Sexey did really well to keep Tor's powerful runners in check. Xavier, Oscar, Zach and the 3 Harry's got stuck into the action early on and clearly enjoyed the physical confrontation. As the game progressed Noah started to use his powerful ball carriers closer to the ruck and Dillion and Harry made a number of big dents in the defence. The ball was eventually shipped to Jack who crashed over for a deserved try. The game remained tight but sustained pressure meant Tor eventually went over to take the game to 1 try each at half time. In the second half Hugh Sexey started very brightly with Zak racing in for a great score. Josh then fielded an excellent kick and after a series of rucks, Harry dummied and darted through for a Captain try. This forced Tor into a reshuffle and change of tactics. They started to kick for the corners and forced Hugh Sexey to play into the wind. It was a clever strategy and one that comes with knowing your pitch and surroundings. Tor then started to get more out of their big runners and brought the game level to 3 tries each. In the end their greater experience showed and in the dying minutes they got the winning try after a number of phases.
The boys team should be very proud of their efforts and it was great to see them play again given the amount of School rugby they have missed. Thanks to all the parents/careers who came to support and thanks to Tor for a great game and for the after match hospitality.
