Year 8 STEM Challenge Day with EDF
On Tuesday 23rd April Year 8 pupils participated in an exciting STEM Challenge day in association with EDF Energy. The day enabled pupils to learn more about careers within the STEM industries and further develop their practical skills within Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Pupils were set the challenge of working in teams of 5 to design and make a vehicle to be fired up a ramp using compressed air. The vehicle had to support the weight of an egg and prevent it from breaking when it impacted and rolled along the floor. To win the challenge, the vehicle had to travel the furthest distance from the launch ramp without the egg cracking. After all the teams manufactured their product they had to test how safely it could transport an egg up the ramp without breaking. Teams were awarded marks for teamwork, budget spent, distance the vehicle travelled and quality of design. Congratulations to Alex Richardson (8DJ), Innes Oliver (8DJ), Gabriel Wheeler (8DJ), Scarlett Knight (8DJ) and Ella Woodcock(8DJ) for winning the STEM Challenge day overall! The judges commended the pupils on their excellent design idea and teamwork skills. Well done on your fantastic achievement.
